Question no 1
Solve the differential equation:

d3y/dx3 - 2 d2y/dx2 + 4 dy/dx - 8y = 0

Solution:

=y‴-2y″+4y′-8y=0

Let, y=emx

y=emx, y′=m emx, y″=m2 emx, y‴=m3 emx

Put in given equation:

=m³ emx -2m² emx +4m emx -8 emx =0

=emx (m³-2m²+4m-8) =0

emx ≠0, m³-2m²+4m-8=0

m³-2m²+4m-8=0 ……. equation no (1)

Possible factors of p, q in (1)

p=-8 = ±1, ±2, ±4, ±8

q=1 = ±1

Rational roots,

p/q= ±1, ±2, ±4, ±8

We put ±1 in equation (1), which does not satisfy this equation,

Now put 2 in equation (1)

(2)3-2(2)2+4(2)-8=0

8-8+8-8=0

0=0

Which satisfy eq (1), so factor (m-2)

By synthetic division:
MC200404644

2| 1 -2 4 -8

| +2 0 +8

| 1 0 4 | 0

(m-2) (m2+4) =0

m-2=0, m2+4=0

m=±2i = 0±2i

General solution of the given differential equation:

y= c1 emx + eax (c2Cos𝛽x+c3Sin𝛽x)

y=c1 e2x + e0x (c2Cos2x+c3Sin2x)

y=c1 e2x + (c2Cos2x+c3Sin2x) Answer
