in your Senior High School TVL track! In spite of the present pandemic
challenges of Covid-19, this material is designed for distance learning. This
course will continue to provide you with updated information, skills, attitude
and values in performing the needed competencies that will equip you to be
competent and acquire National Certificate Level II.

This module will prepare you to become a competent Nail Technician.

HOW TO USE THIS MODULE

In this module, Perform Manicure and Pedicure Services, you’ll find


activities for you to accomplish and read relevant information sheets for each
learning outcome. This module covers the knowledge, skills, attitudes and
values on identifying, requesting and receiving Nail Care materials and tools
based on the required performance standards.

In performing the activities to finish the requirements of this module, please


be guided by the following:

1. Talk to your teacher for guidance and agree on how you both will
organize the training under this module. Read through this module carefully. It
is divided into sections, which cover all the skills and knowledge you need to
successfully complete this third module.

2. Work through all information and complete the activities in each section.

INTRODUCTION
This module is designed to help the Grade 11 Senior High School
students equipped with the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for the
Senior High Technical-Vocational Track for K to 12 Beauty Care Services
(Nail Care) NC II.

This course is about Manicure, Pedicure and Nail Art Designs which
leads you to Beauty Care (Nail Care) Services National Certificate Level II
(NC II). This covers the Core Competency that a Senior High TVL student
like you ought to achieve namely:

Lesson Information 1.1 : Nail Structure

BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT NAIL

Nail is a plate of keratin that lies on the tips of the fingers and toes. The
main purpose of the nail is to protect the fingers and toes, however, the
fingernail also assists with certain physical activities in daily life.

STRUCTURES OF NAILS

1. Lunula - the pearly coloured and crescent shaped is due to the cells being
pushed closely together, the blood capillaries cannot be seen through
the lunula because of this.

2. Cuticle - the overlapping epidermis around the nail. It is the transparent


skin, which is called the 'true cuticle', that is removed during the
manicuring process.

3. Free edge -the part of the nail that can be filed and shaped. It is an
extension of the nail plate that overlaps the hyponychium.
4. Matrix - the only living reproducing part of the nail. This is situated directly
below the cuticle. New cells form here and continually push towards to
produce the nail plate. It also contains blood vessels and nerves.
Blood supply provides the cells with nourishment. If the matrix is
damaged the nail will grow deformed.

5. Nail bed - the part of the nail where the nail plate rests on, also a
continuation of the matrix. It is abundantly supplied with blood vessels
and nerves, having numerous parallel ridges which dovetail exactly with
the ridges on the under surface of the nail plate.

6. Nail walls - the folds of skin that overlap the sides of the nail. They hold
your nail in place and protect the nail plate edges.

7. Nail Plate - is visible nail that rests on the nail bed up to the free edge.
This is made up from dead cells and minimum amount of moisture. The
nail is semi-transparent – allowing the color of blood supply of the
dermis to show.

Did you know that anything else affecting the growth or appearance of
the fingernails or toenails may indicate an abnormality? A person’s nail can
say about the state of their health.

What is the difference between a disease and disorder?

A disease is a pathophysiological response to internal or external


factors. A disorder is a disruption to regular bodily structure and function.
Nail diseases are conditions of both the nail and the surrounding skins
which result from bacterial, fungal and viral infections. Some conditions will
show a green, yellow or black discoloration of the nail, depending on the
nature of the infection. The main course for infection is through damaged
cuticles and broken skin.

Nail Disorders – are condition caused by injury to the nails, diseases


or imbalances in the body. Many disorders can affect the nails. These
disorders can affect any portion of the nail unit and can impact the
appearance of the nail plate itself.

Tools are something such as instrument in which are handheld that aids in
accomplishing a task in nail care service.
Equipment are the items which are more or less durable and permanent
needed for a particular activity or purpose.

Materials are cosmetics and supplies that are consumed and should be
replaced from time to time. They are also called consumables.

Lesson Information 1.5 : Safety Precautions And Sanitation


Procedures

Definition of Terms:

Sanitation - the use of methods to bring about favourable conditions of


health
Infection – a condition when microorganisms invade the body and multiply,
causing illness.

Disinfect – to clean something, especially with a chemical, in order to destroy


bacteria

Sterilize – to destroy microorganisms in or on, usually by bringing to a high


temperature with steam, dry heat, or boiling liquid.

It is vital to sterilize metal implements, sanitize wooden tools, disinfect nail


care tools and equipment as well as environmental surfaces before and after
each use.

Contaminated tools can cause bacterial and fungal infections that are
unsightly, painful, and sometimes, fatal.
There are several methods of cleaning and sterilization. Do a cursory
cleaning after each nail care service and deep-clean monthly to keep tools
safe and useful all the time.

Methods of Cleaning and Sterilizing in the Salon

1. Sterilize metal implements after each use in a hospital-grade disinfectant


that is bactericidal, virucidal, and fungicidal. This disinfectant can be found in
beauty supply stores. Immerse the tools in the disinfectant for 10 minutes.

2. Disinfect basins after each use with a bleach solution. Make a 1:10
solution by mixing one part bleach with 10 parts water. Using gloves, rinse the
basin with the solution to disinfect. If necessary, scrub with a detergent to
remove any dirt or debris.

3. Use a boiling method of sterilization to disinfect all metal implements.


Designate one pot for sterilization to prevent cross-contamination with food.
Submerge the tools in boiling water for 10 minutes. Drain the tools and allow
them to dry.

4. Store sterilized metal implements in an airtight, zipper-sealed bag to keep


them from being exposed to dirt and bacteria. Be sure tools are completely
dry before storing them. In case there is an interval of at least two weeks
before the next nail care service, sterilize the tools again before use.

5. Inspect tools and equipment regularly to identify defective ones for repair,
replacement, or condemnation.

Keeping The Workplace Clean And Safe


1. All beauty salons must be well-lighted and well-ventilated and must be in
good sanitary condition.
2. The salon premises must be free from rodents, vermin, flies and or similar
insects.
3. All salon establishments must be provided with continuous running hot and
cold water.
4. The curtains and floor coverings in the salon must be washable and kept
clean.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Personal Protective Equipment are the garments designed to protect


the wearer’s body from injury or chemicals or for job-related occupational
safety and health purposes.

Lesson Information 1.6 : PROCEDURE IN CLEANING NAILS

Manicure Procedure

1. Condition of hands and nails are checked.


2. Client is advised to remove jewelries and accessories.
3. Cover client’s lap with a towel.
4. Make sure to sanitize your hands with alcohol or hand sanitizer.
5. Sanitize clients hand with a cotton ball, soak with alcohol, starting on
the palm up to the back.
6. Remove any present nail enamel with the use of a cotton ball soak with
acetone.
7. Trim fingernails starting from a little finger, according to desired shape.
8. File the nails with a nail file or emery board. (Never saw back and forth
as it may damage the nail).
9. Place the hand in a manicure bowl filled with warm water and antiseptic
liquid soap just enough to cover the nails.
10. Cut and file the nails on the left hand while waiting for the soaking to
finish.
11. Remove the right hand from the manicure bowl and dry with a towel.
12. Soak the left hand in the manicure bowl.

13. Apply cuticle remover on the nails of the right hand. Push back the
cuticle using a nail pusher.
14. Remove excess cuticle using cuticle nipper. Brush the nails to clean off
the cut cuticles. NEVER cut live skin.
15. Buff the nails using buffer to make it shiny.
16. Apply cuticle oil and massage it in each nail using your thumb. Wipe off
excess oil using a cotton ball.
17. Remove the left hand from the manicure bowl and dry with towel. (Do the
same procedure on the left hand).
18. Pour a small amount of lotion on your hands and apply it unto the
client’s hand and forearm using effleurage.
19. Gently apply thumb kneading to the back of the hand.
20. Place the client’s arm in an upright position, palm facing the client and
apply effleurage to the forearm.
21. Apply basecoat to the nails. Then apply 2 thin coats of enamel, allowing
1 minute between coatings. Then proceed with a thin application of top
coat.

Note:
Base Coat is designed to adhere to the nail plate, seal the surface and bond
with the colored polish.
Top Coat will seal the entire surface. And because of its inherent hardness,
it will keep the polish “fresh” for a longer period.

PEDICURE PROCEDURE

After preparing all the needed tools, materials and equipment, check
the condition of the client’s feet.
1. Remove old polish from the toenails.
2. Soak both feet in the warm soapy water. Wipe with towel to dry.
3. Cut and shape nails using nail file of right foot
4. Apply cuticle remover to the cuticle and under the free edge.
5. Push cuticles to loosen them
6. Using a cuticle nipper trim the cuticles.
7. Apply Cuticle Tint or Benzalconium Chloride.
8. Brush the nails of the feet.
9. Apply lotion and massage each foot.
10. Apply Basecoat followed by 2 coats of colored nail polish
11. Finish with a Top coat.
12. Apply quick drying agent on each polished nail.
13. Repeat same steps with the other foot.

Lesson Information 2.1 : APPLICATION OF BASIC NAIL DESIGNS

Types of Creative Nail Design and its Procedure

A. Plain Manicure - the traditional application of nail polish to the entire nail
plate.

Procedures:

1. Apply base coat.


 Select color of the nail polish according to the customer’s
requirements.
 Apply the base coat with long strokes.
 Start with the little finger and working toward the thumb.
 Allow it to dry.

2. Apply liquid polish.


 Apply the polish lightly and quickly, using sweeping strokes from the
base to the free edge of the nail.
 Apply polish down at the center of the nail, to the right and left side of
the nail.Repeatsecond coat of polish to both hands.

3. Remove excess polish.


 Dip a cotton-tipped orangewood stick into nail polish remover.
 Apply it carefully around the cuticles and nail edges.

4. Apply top or seal coat.


 Apply a top or seal coat with long strokes in the same manner as the
base coat.

B. Half-Moon - a style that involves applying of nail polish over the whole nail
plate except the area of lunula.

Procedures:
1. Apply platinum twice on the nail. Allow it to dry.
2. Apply color enamel from one side to the other side following the shape of
the lunula. Repeat the application of color enamel if necessary.
3. Remove excess polish
4. Apply top coat.

C. Half-Moon with Tip - it involves the application of colored polish over


the whole nail plate except the area of lunula and
tip of the nail.
Procedures:
1. Apply platinum twice on the nail. Allow it to dry.
2. Apply color enamel from one side to the other side following the shape of
the lunula and the free edge. The edge should be seen.
3. Repeat the application of color enamel if necessary.
4. Remove excess polish.
5. Apply top coat.

D. French Manicure or Tip Design

Variation 1

It is a design which involves the application of colored polish over


the whole part of the nail except the area of the free edge.

Procedures:
1. Apply base coat (platinum) twice. Allow it to dry.
2. Apply color enamel from one side to the other following the shape of
the tip or free edge.
3. Fill up other parts of the nail with color enamel in the same way tip was
done. Repeat the application of color enamel if necessary.
4. Remove excess polish.
5. Apply top coat.
Variation 2

It involves the application of white nail polish or colored polish on the


tips and coating the rest of the nail with a sheer polish. It’s suitable for short
nails and those with moderate length of nails.

Procedures:
1. Apply base coat (platinum) twice. Allow it to dry
2. Apply a coat of translucent pink polish over your entire nail.
3. Apply white or color enamel following the shape of the free edge.
Apply second coating, if necessary.
4. Remove excess polish.
5. Apply top coat

E. Elephant Tusk

Elephant tusk is a style that involves the application of nail polish to


create “S” curve, leaving a slightly larger gap along the nail walls.

Procedures:
1. Apply platinum twice. Allow it to dry.
2. Make the half circle design at the inner side of the nail.
3. Shape the other side, following an S-like.
4. Fill the other side to complete the design. Repeat the application of
color enamel if necessary.
5. Remove excess polish.
6. Apply top coat.
