Module 1, Video 2 Worksheet: How to Turn Your Site Into a

Link Magnet
Step 1: Find Topics the Linkerati Loves to Link To
The first thing I do for ANY SEO campaign I’m involved in is creating a Power Page.
But publishing a Power Page that you **think** will work out isn’t always the best
strategy.
(Just for the record, I’m all about taking risks and pushing the envelope. But I like to do
that within a tested, proven framework. There’s nothing worse than working your butt off
on a piece of content only to see it fall flat. This step minimizes the risk of that happening
to almost zero)
That’s why it’s really important to figure out what topics the Linkerati in your space
already link out to.
Without that information you’re pretty much guessing.
That’s what Worksheet 1 was all about.
So as long as you’ve finished Worksheet 1, you’re already on the fast track to step 2…
Step 2: Find Base Content for your Power Page
Once you find content with a track record of Linkerati love, it’s time to find content that’s
already performed well in your industry.
Important note: This isn’t absolutely necessary. If you have a Power Page idea that’s
completely original and has never been done, feel free to roll with that. Some of the best
Power Pages are groundbreaking pieces that forge new ground.
But when you find content that’s performed well, you’ve taken guesswork out of the
equation.
And when you can take that content and make it better or different, you don’t need to
hope and pray that it “goes viral”. You just need to use the promotional and link building
strategies that I’ll teach you in module 2.
How can you find this content?
1. Obviously, any content that you the Linkerati linked to from Worksheet 1 is a good
candidate. Use a tool like ahrefs of Majestic SEO to see if lots of other people have
linked to that content.
2. Put in some of your competitor’s sites (or sites you found from Worksheet 1) into
Open Site Explorer. Click the “Top Pages” tab. That will show you which pages
performed well for them in the past.
3. Google is another fantastic place to look. Just put in keywords related to the topics
you found from Worksheet 1 into Google and see which content ranks. If it’s there,
it’s obviously done well. Pay special attention to pages on non-authority sites. If a
low-authority site has ranked a page for a tough keyword, it must have performed
really well.
When you find content that seem like a good fit, add them to the table below:

Content Title URL

Which leads us to step 3…
Step 3: Add Your Own Twist and Make Your Own Power Page
Now it’s time to publish something that’s truly your own.
You have two options:
1. Take a piece of specific content and make it different/better.
2. Find out what’s lacking from the current base content in general and make
something that fills the content gap.
Example of Improving a Specific Piece of Content: Point Blank SEO’s Link Building
Strategies List
Jon Cooper noticed that SEOBook’s list of 101 ways to build links
(http://www.seobook.com/archives/001792.shtml) generated thousands of links.
So he decided to create something better designed, more up to date and more thorough
(the more ways you can beat the content that’s already out there, the better):
http://pointblankseo.com/link-building-strategies
Example of Improving Content in General:
As I mentioned in the video I noticed that there wasn’t a solid, up-to-date piece of content
about on-page SEO.
I didn’t have any specific piece of content that I decide to improve upon, but I knew that
there was a massive content gap on that topic.
That’s why I created this on-page SEO infographic:
http://backlinko.com/on-page-seo
Look at the list of content that you curated in the table above and see where you can make
some straightforward and objective improvements OR add a new element to the content
(turning the content into an infographic, making it interactive...or just make it better).
Step 4: Create a List of Power Page Ideas
Now add your specific Power Page topics here:

Power Page Ideas

Step 5: Create ONE Power Page From Your List
Now that you have a list of topics, you need to find ONE Power Page topic from the list
that will work best.
In general, you want something that you can produce and publish quickly.
A 10-part infographic series or the Advanced Guides like Neil Patel publishes at
QuickSprout (http://www.quicksprout.com/the-advanced-guide-to-link-building/), work
great. But they take months to put together.
Instead, look for a Power Page you can have live on your site within 7-14 days.
Obviously, you want to make something really great. Which takes a lot of hard work. But
you want to get it out as quickly as you can to give your site a boost.
Once you’ve finished your first Power Page, you can publish another one (and another
one…as many as it takes to hit #1).
Put your top 3 Power Page topics here. Start working on one and get it live on your site.
Once you’ve done that (and promoted it using the proven content promotion and link
building strategies from Modules 2, 3 and 4), come back to this list and repeat the process.
