Lab 3a - Ohms Law

This document summarizes a laboratory experiment on Ohm's Law. The objectives are to determine the relationship between current, potential difference (voltage), and resistance in an electrical circuit. The apparatus includes a multimeter, resistor box, and cells connected in series. The procedure involves connecting resistors R1 and R2 in a circuit, changing the voltage by selecting different cell connections, recording the current and voltage, and plotting the results on a graph. The conclusion is that the graph should show voltage is directly proportional to current, allowing the resistances R1 and R2 to be calculated from the slopes and compared to the marked resistor values.

Ohm’s Law
Objectives: To determine the relationship in an electrical circuit between the current, the potential
difference (voltage) and the resistance.

Apparatus: Multimeter, resistor box, cells in series and connecting wire

+ A -

+ +
V R1
- -

Procedure: 1. Connect the cells and resistor R1 as shown in figure.

2. Change the output voltage by selecting different connecting point of the cells.
3. Record the current and voltage accordingly.
4. Repeat the above procedure with resistor R2

Result:

R1 marked value = __________  R2 marked value = __________ 

Voltage

(V)

Current

(mA)

Conclusion: 1. Plot voltage (y-axis) against current (x-axis) of R1 and R2 on the same graph.
2. From the graph plotted, the voltage is directly / inversely proportional to the current.

3. Find the slopes from the graph, R  , so R1 = __________ , R2 = __________ .

4. Are the values of R1 and R2 you obtained from the graph equal to the marked values? If
not, what are the factors which would affect the result?
