Agilent E6474 UMTS
Agilent E6474 UMTS
Depending on the selected hardware options, the E6474A system can make UMTS
receiver and phone based measurements in the 1.9 GHz and 2.1 GHz bands of UMTS
3GPP networks. Measurements from a number of engineering UMTS mobiles are
supported, including the Qualcomm TM6200, TM6250, TM6275, Motorola A835, Nokia
6630, 6650, 6680 and Nokia 7600 models.
A laptop PC interfaces with the measurement phones and receivers for simultaneous data
and trace measurements. System software controls the devices to make and record user-
selected UMTS measurements including HSDPA and protocol messaging. A GPS receiver,
which can be integrated within the Agilent measurement receiver, may be used to obtain
positioning information that is stored with the measurement results. The system can also
be configured for use with a pen-tablet computer for indoor measurements without a GPS.
Logged data can be exported to mapping or post processing software for analysis.
2
About this document This document gives detailed information on the features of the Agilent E6474A Wireless
Network Optimization Platform for UMTS and the associated software and hardware
options.
It is possible to expand the system at any time by adding software licenses or hardware to
the base product. Multiple measurements can be made simultaneously and can be
displayed in real-time and logged to a database. Indoor measurement capability, without
the need for GPS navigation, can be added by selecting the indoor measurements
software license option. Refer to the E6474A Wireless Network Optimization Platform
Configuration Guide, literature number 5988-2396EN, for detailed option information.

Receiver measurements The receiver measurement functions of the Agilent E6474A Network Optimization
Platform are provided by E6474A-310 and E6474A-320. These options, combined with
the E6455C or E6456C digital receiver option, are composed of four primary elements:
• W-CDMA (UMTS) scrambling code analysis
• Spectrum analysis
• CW power with external trigger
• Channel power
Each element has an associated control and display view. The software can control up to
four Agilent digital receivers for simultaneous monitoring of up to four 5 Mhz bands. The
controls listed below are available for the receiver measurements:
• Measurement interval
- Time
- Distance
• Averaging (spectrum, CW, and channel power only)
- Running
- Group
- Max hold
- At least (CW and channel power only)
The measurement interval defines the duration between measurements. This can be
specified in terms of time (execute a measurement every 200 milliseconds), or distance
(execute a measurement every 10 meters). There are two ways to define the interval by
distance. One is with the use of the GPS and the other is by using the external trigger
capability.
29
Receiver measurements applicable to each of the four views are detailed in the following
sub-sections.
W-CDMA (UMTS) The Agilent E6474A receiver-based system measures 3GPP W-CDMA (UMTS) physical
scrambling code analysis layer. The system makes absolute and relative power measurements of the primary sync
channel, secondary sync channel and the scrambling codes (CPICH). These measurements
are independent of network parameter settings. The system executes three different types
of W-CDMA (UMTS) scrambling code measurements (listed below). Any or all of them
can be executed simultaneously and in conjunction with other types of measurements,
such as spectral analysis.
Top N
The system measures all of the scrambling codes in a timeslot of 2560 chips and returns
the ‘N ’strongest scrambling codes received, where ‘N ’is a user definable integer from
1 to 20. The sensitivity can be varied by averaging over several time slots. The results are
displayed in a bar graph format. (The primary sync and secondary sync are also measured
as part of the Top N measurement and can be displayed on top of each bar in the bar
graph).
User list
The user manually inputs a list of up to 40 scrambling codes to be measured.
It should be noted that this measurement only correlates the codes chosen by
the user and does not process any sync channel information.

The properties dialog box for the UMTS scrambling code analyzer gives an additional
control that allows the user to set the rate at which a full synchronization of the SCH
takes place. A setting of 1 to 50 allows a trade off to be made between speed and
integrity. A setting of 1 (default) carries out a full sync (primary and secondary pilot sync
and Scrambling Code (SC) processing) every measurement update. A maximum setting of
50 carries out a full synch every 50 measurements with the remaining 49 measurements
processing for SC on the detected pilots.

Measurement methodologies In Top N measurements scrambling code, peak power (Ec,Ec/Io and Eb/Io) is
and definitions computed as follows:
The receiver averages over a user defined number of timeslots and selects the strongest
signal of the visible range. The value of the associated secondary sync is then correlated
for power and the secondary sync sequence is achieved to determine the scrambling
code group. The scrambling code (or codes) variables are then determined from within
this group. This is repeated for all values of primary syncs above the pre-determined
threshold and in accordance with the user selected Full SCH update rate control.
Io is the total received power integrated across the entire 3.84 MHz signal bandwidth.
User List Ec,Ec/Io,Eb/Io is calculated by correlating the energy attributed to the user
defined scrambling code. This is calculated directly and does not use the sync channel.
Delay spread is the duration of time over which this power is dispersed. Both aggregate
power and delay spread are determined with respect to an Ec/Io threshold of -17 dB. The
system also reports the difference between the aggregate and peak power (aggregate –
peak). This difference along with the delay spread provides a characterization of the
multipath effect on that scrambling code. Aggregate power and delay spread are only
measured for the Top N and user list measurement types.
Relative time is defined as the difference in time between when a scrambling code signal
is received relative to the start of the 2560 chip timeslot as arbitrarily defined in the
receiver. For example, the receiver will arbitrarily record a 2560 chip sequence where the
beginning of this sequence is defined as zero time. Each scrambling code will have some
delay from this start and thus will have a relative time to the start of the time defined in
the receiver.
Carrier frequency error is defined as the difference between the measured carrier
frequency and the user-specified carrier frequency. Carrier frequency error can be due to
both base station carrier error and doppler shift (if moving).
32
Scrambling code measurements Typical performance measures:
General parameter thresholds for the Top N measurement with no other views open.
1. Primary sync with Ec/Io greater than the noise threshold which equals -21.0 dB for
greater than 12 timeslots, will be processed. The rate at which measurements described
in 1 and 2 are applied is determined by the user selected Full SCH update rate control.
2. Each and every associated secondary sync, with Ec/Io greater than the noise which
equals -21.0 dB for greater than 12 timeslots, will be processed. There can be multiple
secondary syncs per each primary sync.
3. For every secondary sync that is processed, any and all scrambling codes within that
group, of amplitude greater than -20.0 dB, will be reported.
4. If no scrambling code can be detected under a processed secondary sync, then the group
alone will be reported, if the secondary sync’s Ec/Io value is greater than -17 dB.

also covered (down to 1895MHz). The extended ranges are shown in brackets –[]. The performance is not specified in these
extended ranges. Characteristic noise floor increase is 2 dB ±10 MHz. At 25MHz with respect to specified range, the
characteristic noise floor increase is 5dB. Characteristic amplitude accuracy is unchanged with respect to specified range.
2 Does not imply warranted performance, but characteristic performance. Tested with minimum resolution bandwidth: 8.36 kHz
with 1.25 MHz IF Bandwidth, 25.08 kHz with 5.0 MHz IF bandwidth.
Note: Specifications describe warranted performance over the temperature range of 0 to 55° Celsius and include a 30 minute
warm-up from ambient conditions. Typical and characteristic information provides useful but non-warranted performance
parameters. Typical refers to test data at the fiftieth percentile for a 25° Celsius room temperature. Characteristic information
describes product information for parameters that are either not subject to variation, non-measurable, verifiable through
functional pass/fail tests, or routinely not measured.
35
CW power and channel power The Agilent E6474A can measure the peak power (CW power) at user-defined
frequencies within a user-defined resolution bandwidth. The systems can also measure
the total power (channel power) within a user-defined bandwidth at a user-defined set of
frequencies. Channel power differs from the CW power measurement in that the total
power is integrated across the specified channel width. The user can define the
frequencies measured in two different ways, indicated below.

External pulse triggering is used for precise distance measurements by using pulses sent
from the vehicle speed sensor to detect how far the vehicle has travelled. A maximum
pulse rate of 3,333 pulses/second with a minimum pulse width of 100 ns can be
measured. (At 1 pulse per centimeter, this would correspond to a speed of approximately
120 km/hour). The maximum TTL voltage is 15 volts and triggering is on the negative
edge of the pulse.

Features common There are a number of features that are common to the E6474A platform software and
to the E6474A platform that are available in all technologies. These features include the ability to record and
playback data sets, export the data to post-processing software packages, display
parameters on time charts and route maps and define flexible alerts and alarms, based on
user requirements. These features are detailed in this section:
• View management
• Cell naming
• Report generator
• Call Statistics view
• GPS
• Data recording and playback
• Data export
• Link editor
• Measurement Parameters view
• Custom view
• Alarms view
• Time charts
• Route map view
View Management A view management tool is available to enable a reduced number of views to be presented
to the drive-test technician. Specific views can be selected or deselected for display.
Cell naming The phone-based measurements and receiver-based broadcast channel analyzer provide cell
naming features. The cell naming features are dependent on the user providing a text file
database with position and cell configuration information. Where the cell ID is known, for
example in the phone serving cell measurement, this is used to correlate with the cell name in
the database. Where no cell ID is known, for example in neighbor cell measurements or
receiver based measurements, a "best guess" algorithm is implemented. This algorithm makes
use of the geographic location, ARFCN and BSIC to attempt to determine which cell from the
database is the best match. The format of the cell database is text file with the following fields:
• Cell name
• Longitude
• Serving ARFCN
• TCH ARFCN
• Latitude
• Cell ID
• Azimuth
A number of Cellsite database formats can be imported, including:- TXT, Agilent StationInfo
files, ICS, AXF, BXF, CDB, MDB, HP.
Report generator The E6474A system provides fast and easy report generation. The Report generator
command is available at any time during logging, Live Update mode, or when replaying a
data file. All of the active views are captured, and an HTML document is created that
contains a screen capture of each active view. Each report includes a header section and
a dialog box prompts the user to enter the header information listed below. Smart defaults
and persistent information are used (marked *), so minimal text entry is required. There is
no limit to the number of reports that can be generated.
Header elements:
• Report title*
• User name
• Company
• Time*
• Date*
• Location* – defaults to current GPS fix
• Comments – user entered notes
38
Call Statistics view Call Statistics are displayed in the Call Stats view. The Call Stats view shows the call
termination classifications and counts, and call progress messages. For a system with
multiple phones, each device is represented by its own column.

40
Measurement Parameters view The Measurement Parameters view is an Explorer-style view of the system devices and
their measurement parameters. When a data stream is required for entry into a dialog
box, the Measurement Parameters view opens, enabling the user to select a parameter
and automatically generate the data stream required.
The Measurement Parameters view is initiated by the Alarms view, Time Chart view and
Route Map view, as described in the following three sections.
Custom View Custom view gives the user flexibility to create customized views by selecting parameters
required and displaying them in a tabular format. Up to 40 parameters can be applied per
view and multiple views can be created and saved for reuse.
Alarms view The Alarms view is used to configure alarms that are triggered by parameters received
during a test that meet user-defined criteria. Parameters collected as integer values or
messages, from connected phones, receivers or GPS navigation hardware, can be used to
initiate alarms; these parameters are selected using the Measurement Parameters view.
The user can choose any one or all of the following actions to occur on an alarm:
• A .WAV audio file can play
• A marker can be written to the database file, and displayed in the Route Map and Time
Chart views
• A pop-up message box can be displayed
• Measurements can be paused or stopped
Each alarm event is also tabulated on the Alarms view as it occurs. Fifty pictorial survey
markers are available to depict alarm events within the Chart and Route Map views.
Alarms require set-up prior to a database collection in order to enable survey markers
during playback.
The Alarms view enables the user to create simple or complex conditions to trigger an
alarm. The following are examples of how an alarm can be generated:
• Monitor a single parameter for a single set of criteria. When the criteria are met, an alarm is
generated.
41
• Monitor a single parameter and logically "AND" up to five sets of criteria. When all sets of
criteria are met, an alarm is generated.
• Monitor several parameters, each with a single set of criteria. Each parameter can generate
its own sound when the criteria are met.
• Monitor several parameters, each with multiple logically "ANDed" sets of criteria. Each
parameter can generate its own sound when the criteria are met.
• Monitor a parameter that is collected as a text message and generate an alarm when the
message changes.
• Configure multiple instances of the Alarms view. Use one for each device.
Alarm configurations can be shared using export and import commands from the Alarms
view. These alarm configurations are stored as .MSF files. The E6474A software is
supplied with over one hundred predefined .MSF files. By default these are stored at
C:\Program Files\Agilent Technologies\Shared\Alarms. UMTS default alarms include hard
and soft handoff alarms, low Rx power, high Io, potential missing neighbors, and SC
pollution.
Chart view The Chart view is used to display measurements using a graphical display. Once
configured the user can see measurement information displayed relative to time, in both
live and playback modes of operation. Up to 24 user-selected measurements can be
displayed simultaneously, as four groups of six parameters. Multiple chart views can be
displayed.
The user-configurable options are initiated in the Chart view Properties dialog box.
General Chart Properties enable selection of:
Measurement averaging period, measurement update rate, x-axis (time) span,
display/hide markers, display/hide legends and background, border and grid colors.
42
Figure 22. Chart properties
Route Map view The Route Map view shows current position and the route travelled on a map as data is
collected. Several layers of information can be displayed, including signal parameters
(selected via the Measurement Parameters view), survey markers, and notes. Base station
locations, with site names and sector orientations, can also be plotted on the map when
linked to the appropriate cellsite naming database.
Layer Menu
The following layers are supported by the Route Map view. The properties of these layers
are accessed by right-clicking the associated button:
• Cellsite - This shows the name and properties associated with the cell. A cellsite database
must be selected to show this layer.
• Map Picture Layer - This shows the selected .bmp map.
• Street Map Layer - This shows the selected .map or .mif map. Note that TAB files are also
supported through conversion to .mif format
• User Notes - This shows notes that have been entered.
• Survey Markers - This shows Survey Markers that have been entered.
• Current Position - This shows current lat/long position.
• Signal - This shows the color code related to the ‘signal strength’ attribute and the letter
associated with the ‘channel’ attribute as set-up via the Measurement Parameters view in
signal properties. The number of signal buttons available depends on the technology of the
tracking phone, to a maximum of three.
