Course Introduction
Congratulations on taking the first step toward becoming a NASM Certified Personal Trainer!
Throughout this course, you will be provided with the necessary tools and resources to not only pass
your credentialing exam, but to ensure your success within the fitness industry. Welcome to the NASM
family!

NASM-CPT Self-Study Course Syllabus
The NASM CPT Certification exam is comprised of 6 Performance Domains, each making up a percentage
of the overall score.
An overall score of 70% is needed to pass the exam. Only candidates who achieve a passing score on the
exam will be allowed to use the certification program credential. The minimum score needed to pass the
exam is published on NASM’s website, at www.nasm.org.
Certifications are valid for two (2) years and expire on the date provided on the certificate. NASM
Certified Professionals are required to keep their certification current through fulfilling continuing
education requirements every two (2) years. This is referred to as “recertification.”

The NASM exam will expire 180 days from date of purchase and will be subject to an extension/retest
fee if more time is required. Please review the Candidate Handbook located in the Terms and Conditions
section of the course for additional information.
It is strongly recommended you print out the syllabus and use the following course outline checklist to
monitor your progress throughout the course.

Do we need to perform math on the test? Do I need to memorize the formulas from the book?
Math is not necessary for the course or the NASM-CPT credentialing exam. The only formula you will
need to know is “220 – age” to easily determine estimated maximum heart rate.
What if I have technical issues and cannot hear or see information in the course?
It is your responsibility to make sure your computer/device is up-to-date and able to run your CPT Self-
Study course. If you are having difficulties, please try the following steps:
1. Restart your computer/device.
2. Try a different web browser (Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox are recommended).
3. Check if you have the latest version of Adobe Flash Player, and update your system if not.
4. Clear cookies & cache (directions below).
5. Check your download speeds (e.g., using speedtest.net or a similar service); if your speeds are
currently low it can impact your video playback.

6. If you are using an iPad/tablet, they do not always support Adobe Flash and you will need an app
such as Puffin to enable you to see items using Adobe Flash on your device.
