Introduction
General Company Information
In our research into the business’ Biolite and Charity Water some similarities occurred between the two, for instance both Biolite and Charity Water share a similar mission to bring resources to parts of the world that otherwise are unable to obtain the resources themselves due to environmental issues. Vision and Mission Biolite’s mission has the organization striving to bring energy everywhere based on the lack of energy affecting half the world to families and communities in impoverished regions. They achieve this goal by created solar power products, such as portable solar powered chargers and lighting systems, and cleaner burning stoves and heaters that provide much more effective means of energy than what is available to impoverished regions of the world. Biolite can continue operations in providing these products to those in need by reinvesting the money that they make on their online store which is available worldwide. On the other end, Charity:Water works to bring clean water to the many developing countries throughout the world without access to it. This is done by the creation and implementation of wells within these areas lacking water, allowing for safer and readily available water to be obtained. This allows for hours spent traveling every day to collect water that is contaminated with diseases to instead use it for studying or working, allowing for a betterment of life in the long run instead of short-term success. Target Market In the case of Biolite, their founders Johnathan Cedar and Alexander Drummond, decided to sell their renewable energy products at a reasonable price for the products being marketed by running as a For Profit Organization. This way Biolite would have the ability to reach its target market of people and families in low income areas where a reliable energy source is unavailable or too expensive to be obtained constantly, also while being able to target the market of people who wish to be prepared for an emergency. Although, nonprofit projects have more than likely occurred, as the company wants to help those families in need of reliable energy products but can’t afford traditional means. Similarly, Charity:Water founder, Scott Harrison, decided the best way to reach their targeted market affected by water crisis’, in countries such as Africa and South America to be forced to drink dirty water that can cause deadly diseases and other health related issues, would be to base their organization as a Nonprofit organization in order to be able to achieve their overlying goals of the company. However, because both Biolite and Charity:Water are each working towards trying to bring resources to impoverished areas across the world, the needs that each organization fulfills is one in the same but to different degrees. Basic Needs Fulfilled by the Organization You can easily deduce that each company’s value proposition is to provide resources that can be used in areas that aren’t technologically advanced and/or areas where poverty prevents readily available resources from being obtained. In this case it is electricity, heat, and water. But the way that each company is organized is where the two are drastically different. Biolite fulfills the need for clean, renewable energy in the form of solar power lighting and cleaner cooking and heating stoves that can be used in virtually any condition with exceptions. Their solar powered lighting system, the SolarHome 620, provides a charging, lighting, and media station all wrapped into one compact and portable station that can be transported anywhere and be set up with ease. This is especially useful in areas where technical knowledge is lacking but where basic systems like the 620 are easy to comprehend and set up. Charity: Water fulfills the need of clean drinking water that is readily available to those in need of it in the form of wells built across said impoverished areas. These needs are fulfilled by creating safe and readily available sources of water, such as wells, around impoverished regions of the world where the water that is used and already available is miles away from homes and is usually contaminated with disease. But with the creation of these wells comes the cutting back of time used to collect and purify the water which can be used instead for studying and improvements on the well-being of lives across the world. Organizational Structure The structure of Biolite can be defined as a social enterprise corporation due to their attempts of maximizing their social responsibility by bring their solar powered products to those in impoverished regions while also selling their products commercially to the rest of the world at a reasonable price. The structure therefore compliments the rest of Biolites mission as a whole as well as develops a positive view for the company’s consumers. Charity:Water on the other hand is a non-profit organization corporation that donates everything raised to their mission to provide water to those people and regions of the world in need. The special thing about Charity:Water is that their funds are separated to two different accounts, which allows for the rest of the world to see the amount of funds collected for the organization’s charity works and one for their operational costs. As a non-profit organization, they don’t create and/or sell products to fund their operations and instead rely on donations to continue function.
