Trivia
King Piccolo's name is based on the instrument of the same name.
The word Piccolo means "another world" in the Namekian language.
In the original manga, King Piccolo is the only villain to get his wish granted by
Shenron, and the first villain to get his wish granted in both anime and manga.
King Piccolo is the first person in the series to kill Shenron. The second
was Towa in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2.
King Piccolo's red blood
Early in the anime, King Piccolo's blood is portrayed as red. Later, when Namekians
are recognized as a true race within the series and not a simple demon clan as initially
suspected, their blood is portrayed as purple, even though Drum's blood was seen as
purple before the Vegeta Saga, the beginning of which still portrayed their blood as
red.
In the English dub of the anime, when questioning how Goku could withstand his
power, he remarks that he had fought all over the universe and never met anyone who
could match his strength. This may have been a vague way of implying King Piccolo
had used the ship in which Kami had originally come to Earth to seek stronger
opponents in space sometime before being sealed away, though the original
Japanese versions makes no mention of this, as the ship and Kami's origins had not
been revealed during this time. Later, when the ship was finally revealed, it did not
appear to have been used since it had landed on Earth with the Nameless Namekian
on board.
Though Piccolo was shown to know the language, and some of his
powers and techniques are of Namekian origin, even replicating Grand
Elder Guru's throne.
Strangely, King Piccolo is shown to know he is a Namekian in Budokai
Tenkaichi 3: if the player pairs him against Lord Slug or Nail, he will say
"I won't let anybody stand in my way, even if they're a Namekian!"
Despite not being referred to as Piccolo Daimao in the English dub, an attack increase
item in Budokai 3 is called "Daimao's Power" and can only be used by Piccolo.
Despite being a Namekian, who is stated to only need water for nourishment, in
anime filler, King Piccolo is shown to eat food when a feast is prepared for him.
This trait of eating solid food was inherited by his final son/reincarnation
as the young Piccolo Junior is shown eating a fish while living in the
wilderness. However, his son would apparently come to realize that he
did not need to consume solid food to survive as he only drinks water
in Dragon Ball Z.
In Dragon Ball Super, Piccolo is occasionally seen apparently enjoying
meals at social gatherings years after learning he only requires water to
survive.
King Piccolo and his son consumption of solid food are referenced
in Xenoverse 2 by a Namekian farmer in Conton City.
In Kakarot, his son can consume food like other characters though he is
never actually shown eating during Full Course Meals (instead he is
shown with a glass of water though he still receives the same benefits
from full course meals).
In addition to Piccolo, Necke is a young Namekian whom
Gohan rescues on Namek and discovers is suffering from
an stress disorder which prevents the child from
absorbing nutrients from water forcing him to learn how to
eat solid food as an alternative way of acquiring nutrients.
As a result of his disorder he chooses to remain on Earth
instead of relocating to New Namek. Necke's story
reveals Namekians can absorb nutrients from both water
and solid foods though can obtain all the nutrients they
require from water unless they suffer from the same
condition as Necke which impedes their ability to absorb
nutrients from water, forcing them to rely on solid food.
Despite planning to have his reincarnation take revenge on Goku and kill him in order
to rule the Earth, King Piccolo's final act ironically did more good than evil, as Piccolo
would later go on the be one of Earth's greatest heroes.
In Dragon Ball GT, King Piccolo's selfish wish for eternal youth is
revealed to have spawned the 4-Star Shadow Dragon Nuova Shenron.
Unlike the other Shadow Dragons, Nuova Shenron was noble and
honorable, even becoming an ally of Goku. Nuova Shenron's good
nature is the direct result of King Piccolo's wish, as it was a selfish and
evil wish. This marks the second time King Piccolo is responsible for the
birth of a rival of Goku's who later becomes an ally.
King Piccolo is the first villain to technically and partially succeed in taking revenge on
Goku as his reincarnation Piccolo ultimately ends up killing Goku in Dragon Ball Z with
the Special Beam Cannon which was one of King Piccolo's main reasons in creating
Piccolo, though it should be noted that Goku sacrificed his life to defeat and kill his
older brother Raditz and was later revived with the Earth's Dragon Balls. Interestingly,
he shares this with Dr. Gero who partially succeeded in taking revenge on Goku (for
the destruction of the Red Ribbon Army) when he was killed by Cell's self-destruction,
though again it was the result of a self-sacrifice by Goku who was ultimately revived
by Elder Kai transferring his remaining life to Goku. Additionally, King Piccolo himself
is related to Cell through his son as Cell possesses Piccolo's cells.
In an interview, while talking about Cell, Akira Toriyama pointed out that King Piccolo
had also previously enjoyed himself by taking over the world as if it were a game and
tried to rule the world through fear, causing Toriyama to wonder if Cell's similar way of
doing things is from the influence of Piccolo cells. [11]
In Dragon Ball Super manga, when Vados and Champa question Piccolo's status as a
Namekian, Piccolo refers to himself as the reincarnation of the Demon King Piccolo.
In Chapter 383 of the manga Gin Tama, King Piccolo makes an appearance, where
he is seen being sucked by a black hole, much in the same way as when he was
sucked in by the Evil Containment Wave. Gintoki comically bought some seals and a
rice cooker, saying "the previous owner had sealed evil king something --ccolo".
Shimura then says "You were just missing the "Pi"!!!!! It's friggin' Evil King Piccolo!!!!!"
In the FUNimation dub, King Piccolo never actually wishes for eternal youth, just the
restoration of his youth and former power.
According to the Daizenshuu, King Piccolo was inspired by Akira Toriyama's first
editor, Kazuhiko Torishima. He shares this with Dr. Mashirito from Dr. Slump, who was
also inspired by Kazuhiko Torishima.
In Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors, it is implied in a what-if scenario that Piccolo
Jr. can only access the Nameless Namekian's full potential by fusing with his father
King Piccolo in addition to Kami. Presumably, this is due to Piccolo's status as being
both King Piccolo's child and reincarnation. Thus by fusing with both his son and
Kami, the Nameless Namekian is effectively restored completely.
Counting the film Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug, Piccolo is the first evil Namekian to wish
for eternal youth, the second being Lord Slug in the film. Lord Slug shares many
similarities with King Piccolo as they are both evil Namekians that lead Demon Clans
and in their old age sought the Dragon Balls to restore their youth and power.
King Piccolo was given a mention in Dragon Ball Z: Bojack Unbound, where Goku
upon learning about the titular villain compared the villain to him.
King Piccolo's strategy of eating the Dragon Balls and defeating the Dragon Team
before taking their remaining Dragon Balls was later reused with Super Saiyan
4 Broly in the manga version of Victory Mission.
In Dragon Ball GT, Goku tries a similar strategy, eating one of the
Dragon Balls.
