I. Introduction

Smartphones has a lot of things that can help us. When discussing the topic of

new media the importance of networks are very essential. With the help of network the whole

world is connected with each other. this is the easiest way to connect with your family member,

friends and clients. Smartphones provide better means of communication, learning options to

user, great exposure to the latest things, ways to personality development, simple ways to

access applications idea to succeed in business, platforms to grow their applications and more.

Smartphones makes our life easier. It has different kinds of application that you want to

download whatever you want.

Mobile games are definitely put the students in a different mindset and

apparently a much better mood. There are three times more likely to feel focused playing

games. They also feel focus and more engaged on games. Youtube is a video sharing service

that allows the students to watch videos posted by other users and upload videos of their own.

Watch music videos, comedy shows, how to guide recipes, hacks and more, and subscribe to

other youtubers and celebrities they are interested in. several companies and organizations also

use youtube to promote their business, the vast majority of Youtube vidoes are created and

uploaded by amateurs, Social media is playing a vital role in the success of smartphones,

because of social media it’s possible to share data videos, pictures, and other tasks. Facebook,

twitter, and Instagram, are the examples of social media. Social media and smartphones means

to connect more and more people online ever on your mobile phones.

Nowadays smartphones play a significant role in almost every person’s life. This

compact device allows us to call our relatives, friends or colleagues at any time. In addition, we
don’t have to memorize the phone number of a friend, who we haven’t seen for ages, but want

to call. Besides the contacts, our phone is able to store a lot of other data like photos, videos,

credit card numbers, memorable dates, as well as our written thoughts and ideas. In the modern

society, smartphones have already replaced paper notebooks and flash drives. With the Internet

access,

we can quickly find much-needed information almost anywhere. And all sorts of useful

applications, features and options available in smart devices make this gadget so

multifunctional.

“Banning of Smartphones in Apas National High School” would be the smartest way to

bring back the good old days. We have observed that students nowadays are depending and

addicted to smartphones. And we are very sure that banning of smartphones on school would

be a great idea to that students to help develop their knowledge and explore more mechanically
II. Review of Related Literature and Studies

Foreign Literature

A study by Bianchi et al., using predictors from addiction literature, the study sought to

predict problematic mobile phone usage. It keyed in on factors they believed to cause

mobile phone disorders.195 subjects of both genders and an average age of 36 (ranging from

18-85 years old) were interviewed. The results lead to the creation of the Mobile Phone Problem

Use Scale. This scale was compared to the Addiction Potential Scale. Fundamentals that were

used to compare the scales and create the Mobile Phone Problem Use Scale were the amount

of time one uses their cell phone and the type of usage. The behavioral predictors that

influenced the amount of cell phone usage were: being extraverted, possessing low self-

esteem, and being young. These characteristics were fundamental in determining problematic

cell phone use. The study showed that these behavioral predictors did not influence the amount

of cell phone usage: gender, and neuroticism. The scale developed was designed to help with

implementing any interventions for potential addictive behavior.

In a literature review of Womack, J. & Mc Namaracell, C., they explored phone use and

its impact on academic performance of students in classrooms. Statistical data on cell phone

use in the classroom may offer insight into how prevalent the effects of cell phone use are on

academic performance (Olmsted & Terry, 2014). Over 95% of undergraduate

students own cell phones, as noted across multiple studies (Elder, 2013; Olmsted & Terry,

2014; Petti john, Frazier, Rieser, Vaughn, &Hupp-Wilds, 2015). With the widespread ownership

of cell phones among students, cell phone usage in the classroom is probable. Of the students
who own cell phones, Froese and colleagues (2012) found that 75% have their cell phones with

them in every class period. Likewise, in a study published in 2012,Tindell and Bohlander found

that even more students, 95%, bring their cell phones to every class meeting. However, only

between 8% and 9% of students turn their phones completely off during class time (Berry &

Westfall, 2015; Tindell & Bohlander, 2012).

Foreign Studies

This research work by Soyemi J. Oloruntoba, S.A. & Okafor B., examined phone usage

and identified the effects internet-enabled mobile phones have on the academic performance of

students at the tertiary institutions using the Federal Polytechnic students of Ilaro, Ogun State in

Nigeria as a case study. The research work was performed so as to understand and also find

the correlation between the academic performance of students and the usage of the mobile

phone during class hours which is generally believed to be an avenue of distractions to

students. The information from this work was carried out using structured questionnaires

administered to 45 students to get their individual views. In addition, 15 extensive interviews

were done concurrently to have a grounded knowledge of the students with the data gathered

during the course of this study. Our findings indicated that students are influenced negatively to

a great extent by the mobile phone because attention is focused on chatting, music, and others

while their academic activities are neglected and left to suffer. Also, this study discovered that

the use of mobile phone is uncontrollable among students which are the leading cause of poor

academic performance among students.

Local Literature

According to Taylor Nelson Sofres, a global customized research company said in its

report that Filipino consumers are not just using cell phones to call and texting messages and
photos, but also as a means to have "internet- on-the-go," allowing users to be always online.

Of the 38,000 respondents in Metro Manila, 75 % of the respondents surveyed used mobile

phones to take photos or videos; 45 % to browse the internet; 44 % to access their social

networking sites, and 37 % to check their emails. The study was conducted from November

2012 to January 2013. “Based on the findings of the study, the increase in various mobile

activities explain the growing trend of Wi-Fi accessibility in public areas.” Said TNS Philippines

Managing Director Gary de Ocampo. According to DO 70, s. 1999 and DO 83, s. 2003 of

Department of Education, the use of cellphones have diverted the attention of students from

their studies. Moreover, reports show that text messaging are causing disturbance to the

classes and being used to cheat during examinations. As a respond, school officials are

directed to ensure that text messaging during class hours and within school premises should be

stopped, at very least closely monitored and regulated. Using cellphones in the classroom

without permission or excuse is a minor offense which may lead to confiscation, verbal

reprimand and suspension as stated in student’s handbook at ANHS.

Local Studies

According to a research done by the Eden Strategy Institute, the Filipino society

would rather lose their personal necessities such as soap and shampoo rather than lose internet

access and their cellphones. This shows that the mindset of the younger generation in the

country portrays a continuing transformation making them more connected to internet and

technology daily, compared to the older generations where access was very limited. In

the recent years, the Filipino community has always relied on weather forecasting, information

dissemination, emergency reliefs and rescue equipment that so often have not been helpful

enough. But with the ingenuity of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) through

the efforts of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration

(PAGASA), a new arsenal has been deployed to accurately detect typhoons and disasters in an
integrated and responsive system: The Project NOAH (Nationwide Operational Assessment of

Hazards). Through Project NOAH, the average Pinoy can receive warnings about incoming

floods and possible evacuations, six hours in advance through the comforts of

their mobile phones and laptops. In the fast-paced society that we live in, technology has also

become a focal point in all aspects of human activity. Locally, in Davao City, a marketing

research study conducted by Berico et al. (2008) showed that the preference towards features

of mobile phones by consumers is high with a grand mean of 4.85.Among the features

mentioned are high-quality built-in camera lenses, music player, and web connections, these

are some of the most advanced features offered by mobile phone makers during those times.

The study also showed that consumers preferred mobile phones which are very portable and

comfortable. This is evident in the handsets that the market has today. Observations revealed

that as the variety of mobile phones emerged the growing popularity of the local brands such as

Cherry Mobile and Myphone has also captured the Davao residents liking for their preference of

mobile brand.

Synthesis of the Reviewed Literature and Studies

The studies and literature that the researchers bring are a useful device to complete the

study. The foreign and local literature along with the study is somehow associated with each

other and is extremely beneficial in solving the dilemma of this research, which is to determine

the effects of the cellphone to the academic performance in English subject of the grade 10

students.

The local literature focused on maximizing the use of cellphones in the public areas of

our country. Additionally, it also demonstrates the rules and regulations governing the use of

cellphones.
The foreign literature explained the relationship of the prevalence of cellphones to the

harmful physical and psychological effects of mobile phones. It also clarified what makes a

cellphone cause distraction and why does it lower student’s academic performance

While the local & foreign studies function as a proof that mobile phones are still making

addictions and distractions to the students which make them neglect their academic activities

which in turn, the academic performance suffer. However, the studies also suggest that

cellphones are also used to increase environmental awareness such as PAGASA, & Project

NOAH that is used to deliver warnings on disasters. Furthermore, the studies also showed that

the cellphone users in Davao have high preference towards features of mobile phones

especially the ones that are convenient and comfortable, allowing them to admire high quality

cellphone brands
III. Research Question

Statement of the Problem

The statement of our study is to identify how smartphones affects the academic

performance of Grade 10 students in Apas National High School Department in the 2 nd

Semester of the school year 2019-2020. Specially, this sought to answer the following

questions:

1. How smartphones affects the behavior of the students?

2. Is Banning Smartphones can bring back how the students used to be like the

old days?

3. Do really smartphones help the students with their assignments? Or it makes them

more unproductive?
IV. Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study only focuses on the effect of smartphones in the academic performance of

Grade 10 students in Apas National High School, and how it affects their academic

performances, how it change their behavior also how it distracts them during class. The intent of

this study is to get opinion and ideas, what will be their respond in banning smartphones, will it

be effective or not. Is banning smartphones makes the student bring back from being productive

and academically active in any activities involved inside the campus. We will be figuring out

what other effects of smartphones and observed how will the participants respond.

This involves an survey using stratified sampling technique for it to target students who

are involved in using smartphone. We will be roaming around in Grade 10 classrooms who’s a

having a vacant time or during their recess time. The selection of the respondents are only

limited into 30 since there is a lot of student in Grade 10 at Apas National High School.
V. Research Methodology

Sampling

In conducting survey to this study the researchers will going to use stratified sampling

technique, because it is the easiest method of sampling for us where participants are selected

based on availability and willingness to take part. This will provide survey questionares to be

answered by the participants, also serves as our research instrument. The participants consist 6

students in each section since there is a lot of students in one section in Grade 10 at Apas

National High School. Each of the participant will be a given copy of questionares together with

the consent letter. Lastly, participants must have using a smartphones.

Ethical Issues

Ethical
Action Plan
Issue

Honesty

and In doing the survey, the researcher should always keep to any agreements, and act
Integrity sincerely.

Researcher should never recommend as a peer reviewer someone he/she know, or

Objectivity who .he/she have worked with, and should try to ensure that no groups are

inadvertently excluded from the research. This also means that the researcher need to

disclose any personal or financial interests that may affect its research.
Data Gathering Procedure

This section describes how the researchers administered the data gathering procedure.

1st step. The researchers will make a letter to ask permission to the principal that we will

be conducting a survey inside the campus.

2nd step. Researchers will roam around in Grade 10 building who’s having a vacant time.

3rd step. The researcher will be selecting 6 students in each section who’s willing to

participate in the survey.

4th step. The researcher explain and let the participants understand what is the research

all about.

5th step. After that the questionares will be given and would only last for about 3 to 5

minutes.

So Grade 10 has 5 classrooms and we will be selecting 6 students in each classroom

which a total of 30 students.

 What is the reason why do smartphones distract you during class hours?

 Is banning smartphones can bring back the students from being productive and

active in activities inside the school? Why or Why not?

 Do smartphones really help your academic activities or it makes you unproductive?

 How many hours do you spend your time just using smartphone?

Data Analysis
To analyse the data, a quantitative descriptive analysis, or a thematic analysis, will be

used. After the data gathering procedure transcript of the survey will be created and the

researchers will read the answers of the respondents in order to analyze it thoroughly and to

connect it to the research’s themes properly. In order to have a better understanding of the

study, the following steps will be followed:

First, the researchers will gather data through a survey selected students from the junior high

school department.

Second, the researchers will transcribe the survey so as to provide copies and be able to

analyze better.

Next, the survey will be analyzed by the researchers according to the themes of the research:

occurrence of smartphones, cause of Smartphones and response towards Banning Of

Smartphones.

Fourth, the result of the survey will be interpreted. Lastly, the interpretation of the survey will be

written and submitted.

VIII. Plan for Dissemination

This study was conducted to reach out every public school administrators and teacher

how smartphones affects every student since it came into their lives. Which awares them that

they should have been using their own knowledge and ideas instead of depending searching on

the internet. Allowing the authority to use smartphones on school makes the student

unproductive and they will be depending on their smartphones, they spend most of their time

sitting down at the side and use their smartphones instead in participating in any performance

task. During the presentation the student will be distracted by their smartphones playing mobile

games, chitchatting with someone or spending their hours scrolling on Facebook, twitter, You-

tube, Instagram, any forms of social media instead of paying their attention into their classes

they’ll be no concentration in their lectures. At home also instead of studying for the exam they

tend to use their phones and play games especially when there is internet they will be enjoying

using their phones where they can spent their free time in social media. Which allows them to

do cheating during exams or quizzes. Also there are also who graduated already but they gain

less learnings they don’t have enough knowledge, self-confidence also a few techniques in

applying for work

The purpose of this study is to inform the authority to ban smartphones for the

sake of the knowledge of every student in this campus to able them to use and produce their

own contents and ideas to help them with their academic activities. The importance of this

research is for the benefit of the following.

Students. It will realize the consequences of spending too much time using their smartphones

Teachers. It will raise awareness and warned their student for using their cellphone during class

hours, also they will manage the use of smartphones in their class

Administrators. It will receive a good results of the performance of every students in Apas

National High School.
