The Great Depression
05 Assignment
In the lesson, you read about the causes of the Great Depression and how the U.S. government
reacted to it. You also saw how Americans were affected by these hard times.
Write three paragraphs explaining the causes and effects of the Great Depression and reflecting on
the experience of those who lived during this time.
Your well-developed response should thoroughly address each of the following in one paragraph:
● the causes of the Great Depression and how people were affected by it
● the response by the Hoover administration to the distress
As you write your third paragraph, look at the photograph shown on this screen. It was taken by
Dorothea Lange of two families on the side of a highway in Bakersfield, California in 1935.
● Explain how the photograph reflects the experience of those who lived during the Great
Depression. Be sure to make connections between what you have learned in the lesson and
specific details in the photograph.
There were many things that contributed to the cause of the great depression. The stock market
was one of the main contributors. During this time, the stocks that were being sold exceeded
their actual value. Meaning that companies were selling more shares then they were worth.
People who weren't able to afford to buy stock upfront bought stock on margin. This meant that
they took out loans to buy stocks and planned to pay the loans back once the stocks became
profitable. In October 1929, the stock market began to decline. Once the decline started brokers
issued margin calls meaning that anyone who had bought stocks on margin had to pay back the
loans they took out. Everyone began selling their stocks in an attempt to get their money back.
This caused the market to crash even further. The market crashed around 24 percent between
black monday and tuesday. This crash caused American citizens to no longer trust the
American economy and stop spending their money. This caused businesses to no longer profit
as much therefore have to lay off employees. With more people losing their jobs, even less
people were spending their money. This cycle caused businesses to profit less, and Americans
to earn less.
The federal reserve responded to this crisis by raising the interest rates. They did this to try to
protect the value of the dollar in the international market. However the result of this was that
people weren't able to get loans in order to purchase new things so the market continued to
crash. President Hoover was not a believer in government intervention in economics. Once the
depression hit it was clear that America needed some type of help from the government. Hoover
signed the Smoot Hawley Tarrif which placed high tariffs on goods imported to the U.S. This
was an attempt to support American businesses and encourage consumers to put their money
back into the American economy. This act backfired and ended up bringing down the whole
worlds economy. Hoover also designed the RFC a program designed to provide aid to banks
and farming operations. Despite this unemployment kept rising and most of America turned
against Hoover.
I am the man standing. I am the father of these children. So far the children have been taking
this as a fun road trip. Luckily we have been able to provide them with enough food to keep
them healthy and nourished. Myself as well as the other adults have not been as fortunate. This
whole situation is very stressful. It is hard for me to understand how the dust bowl could affect
everyone in our area so severely. I am scared for the future and am praying that I am able to
find a job in the city and begin providing for my family again.
