1. CAMWORKSVIEW: AN INTRODUCTION

CAMWorksView is a new utility which was first introduced with the CAMWorks 2013 SP1
version (under a different name “Glovius”). This utility gets automatically installed when you
install CAMWorks 2013 SP1 or later versions.

What is CAMWorksView viewer?

CAMWorksView is an extensible & customizable 3D viewer, for consumption of product
design data. It enables the user to review CAMWorks toolpath operations data along with the 3D
models of stock, Work-in-process (WIP) and the finished part model.
CAMWorksView is available in 3 forms:
i. CAMWorksView XML Style sheet template
Within CAMWorks, CAMWorksView is available as XML Style sheet templates that
enable generation of Setup Sheets containing 3D model views of the stock, WIP and
finished parts. (Refer Chapter 2: Generating 3D Setup Sheets)

ii. CAMWorksView Desktop utility

The CAMWorksView Desktop utility is automatically installed on installing
CAMWorks 2013 SP1 or a later version. A functionality is provided within
CAMWorks wherein users can export CAM data to a .JT file. This .JT file can then
be viewed using the CAMWorksView Desktop application. It enables users to
zoom/pan/rotate .JT models and to take simple section views. (Refer Chapter 3:
Using the CAMWorksView Desktop Application)

iii. CAMWorksView Mobile app

The CAMWorksView mobile app. enables users to view CAM data generated for a
solid model. A functionality is provided within CAMWorks wherein users can export
CAM data to an external file format (.cwview). This file can then be viewed on the

2. GENERATING 3D SETUP SHEETS

From the CAMWorks 2013 SP1 version onwards, CAMWorksView Style sheet templates are
provided in the CAMWorks application. When a CAMWorksView template is used for
generating a XML-based Setup Sheet, the user can view the 3D models of the stock, WIP and
finished parts in the Setup Sheets.

What are Setup Sheets?

The Setup Sheet is a printable file that contains information that the machine tool operator can
use to set up the part and the tools required to produce a part. The information includes the
machine, the controller, estimated machine time, the part material, and the tooling used to
machine the part.

Command to generate Setup Sheets

After generating toolpaths for the
solid model in CAMWorks, right-
click on the CAMWorks NC
Manager item in the CAMWorks
Operation tree and select Setup
Sheet command on the
CAMWorks NC Manager context
menu and then select Generate…
command on the cascading menu.
Executing this command displays
the Setup Sheet Options dialog
box. Edit the settings as required Command to generate the Setup Sheet
and then click on the OK button if this dialog box to generate the Setup Sheet.

Types of Setup Sheets

CAMWorks provides two types of Setup Sheets:
 Access: When this type is selected, CAMWorks generates the WIP images (depending on
the options selected) and transfers the machining information about each operation to the
Report Database. The Report Database opens in Access and the Setup Sheet is displayed.

 XML: When this type is selected, CAMWorks generates the WIP images (depending on the
options selected) and transfers the machining information about each operation to an XML
file that can be displayed as an HTML file in a web browser. An XSL style sheet will be
used to merge the XML content with HTML formatting to determine the appearance of the
web page.

The CAMWorksView Style Sheet Templates

When an XML based Setup Sheet is
generated, the resultant Setup Sheet is
displayed in the form a webpage in the
browser. An XSL style sheet is used to
merge the XML content with HTML
formatting to determine the appearance
of the web page. The CAMWorks
Options dialog box provides an option
wherein you can select the Style Sheet
template to be used for merging the
XML content with HTML formatting.
The following CAMWorksView Style
Sheet templates are available in the
Setup Sheet Options dialog box:
 CWViewTemplate (only for
Mill parts)
 CWViewTurnTemplate (only
for Turn parts)
 CWViewMillTurnTemplate
(only for Mill-Turn parts)

How the CAMWorksView templates differ from other CAMWorks templates

The CAMWorksView templates differ from the other Style sheet templates available in
CAMWorks due to its capacity to generate 3D model views.
When any of the other available templates are applied, the Setup sheet displays only 2D images
of the stock, WIP models and finished part. When the CAMWorksView template is applied, the
Setup Sheet generated too displays 3D images of the stock, WIP models and finished parts.
However, when you click on any of the stock, WIP or finished part images, the corresponding
3D model view of the model is invoked. You can then zoom/rotate/pan the displayed 3D model
to your desired orientation. Once you shift focus from the 3D model to another location in the
Setup sheet (focus shifts when you left click the mouse in another location), a new snapshot of
the WIP model in its user-defined orientation will be generated.

default location where the
generated Setup Sheet will be
saved. If you wish to change this
location, click on the Browse
button to the right of this field.
Use the Browse to Folder dialog
box to assign a location other
than the default location.
 The Style sheet path indicates
the default location of the folder
containing CAMWorks Style
Sheet templates. If the location
is displayed in the field, proceed
to the next step. In case this field
is blank, click on the Browse
button to the right of this field
and specify the default location
of the folder containing Style
Sheet templates.
 In the Style sheet dropdown list,
select the CAMWorksView
template. The name of the Setup Sheets Options Dialog box
CAMWorksView template
displayed in the dropdown list depends on the part type.

WIP Models in the Setup Sheet

Observe the CAMWorks Operation tree. For the solid
part under consideration, 15 operations have been
defined.
Whenever a Setup Sheet is generated, the WIP model
after the execution of each operation listed in the
Operation tree will be displayed.
When a CAMWorksView template is used to generate
an XML-based Setup sheet, you can click on the
displayed WIP model in order to invoke the
corresponding 3D model.
You can then zoom/rotate/pan the displayed 3D model
to your desired orientation. Once you shift focus from
the 3D model to another location in the Setup sheet
(focus shifts when you left click the mouse in another
location), a new snapshot of the WIP model in its user-
defined orientation will be generated.

3. USING THE CAMWORKSVIEW DESKTOP

APPLICATION
The CAMWorksView Desktop Application
The CAMWorksView Desktop application is a non-licensed, freeware JT Viewer. This
customizable 3D viewer enables the viewing of CAM data generated using CAMWorks in the
lightweight .JT format (the most widely used 3D visualization format).
Using CAMWorksView, users can review CAMWorks toolpath operations data along with the
3D models of stock, Work-in-process (WIP) and the finished part model, thus enabling
consumption of product design data.

How the CAMWorksView Desktop application benefits CAMWorks Users

The greatest advantage of CAMWorksView is that it is a free JT Viewer software which can
even be installed on machines that do not have CAMWorks running on them, thus enabling
users to view the CAM data generated for the solid models.
Previously, the CAM data that one generated on solid part models using CAMWorks could only
be viewed using the CAMWorks application. This effectively meant that to view CAMWorks
data on another machine, one needed to have CAMWorks installed on that machine. This
worked well only in situations where multiple licenses of CAMWorks had been purchased. If
the CAMWorks data needs to be accessed on another machine (which doesn‟t have CAMWorks
installed) for viewing purposes only (not for editing or updating purposes), then
CAMWorksView is the perfect answer.
Imagine a situation where only a single CAMWorks license has been purchased. Suppose a
programmer has generated CAMWorks data for a part to be machined and needs to share the
WIP and toolpath information with the shopfloor operator. The operator doesn‟t have
CAMWorks installed but has CAMWorksView installed. The programmer can publish the
CAMWorksView file for the solid part to be machined and share it with the shopfloor operator.
Using CAMWorksView, the operator can view the 3D models of the stock, WIP models,
toolpaths and finished parts.

How to view CAMWorks data in the CAMWorksView Desktop Application

A functionality is provided within CAMWorks wherein users can export CAM data to a .JT file.
This .JT file can then be viewed using the CAMWorksView Desktop application. Once the .JT
file is loaded in the CAMWorksView application, users can do the following:
 Zoom, pan and rotate models, with full screen support
 Standard Views of the stock, WIP model and finish part
 Play animation
 Take simple section views
 Save and email snapshots of .JT models

Using the CAMWorksView Desktop Application 15

CAMWorksView Tutorial

Limitation of the CAMWorksView Desktop Application

The CAMWorksView Desktop application is a free JT Viewer software. This means that this
software can be used only for viewing/reviewing the solid part and CAM data (generated using
CAMWorks) for the solid model. The CAM data can be viewed and snapshots of various views
can be taken. However, the CAM data cannot be edited or updated.

Installing CAMWorksView Desktop Application along with CAMWorks
