For the facilitator:
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the self-learning module:
As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
self-learning module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while
allowing them to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to
encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the self-learning
module.
This self-learning module has the following parts and corresponding icons:
Posttest - This measures how much you have learned from the
entire module.

LESSON
If a quadratic equation ax ²+bx +c=0 has no bx term, you can solve the equation, by
isolating x² on one side, to obtain x ²=d and taking the square roots of each side.
This process is called Extracting the Square Root.
PROBLEM: A square tile has an area of 144 cm². How long is each side of the tile?
EQUATION: Area = s²
144 = s²
Solution: s² = 144
s = ± 12 Simplify
s ¿ 12∧s=−1 2 Split ± into + or –
The solutions are 12 or -12 but we take only the positive root since it involves
length of the sides of a tile.

Journal Writing:
If the equation is in the form ( ax )2=d , the simplest way to solve it is by square
root method. Solutions are not always rational, because when number on the left
side is not a perfect square the roots become irrational. How is life similar to
rational and irrational roots? Are you an irrational thinker or rational thinker?
