Lab#3: Comparison Between Hub and Switch With Cisco Packet Tracer Program

The document describes a lab experiment using Cisco Packet Tracer to compare how a hub and switch connect end devices and exchange data. The objectives are to learn how to use Packet Tracer, assign IP addresses, connect devices to a hub and switch, and exchange messages between devices. The procedure involves opening Packet Tracer, selecting devices, connecting PCs to either a switch or hub, assigning IP addresses, sending test messages between PCs, and observing the differences between how a hub and switch transmit data.

Lab#3: Comparison between Hub and Switch with Cisco

Packet Tracer Program

Introduction
Packet Tracer is a proprietary tool of Cisco. It is used to create and simulate network virtually. It
gives same environment virtually as it exists physically. You can work on all devices virtually as
you would work on them physically. This tool provides all types of network devices to create
real time working network and also provides same interface as if you are working on real device.

Objectives
 To learn how to use packet tracer workspace
 To learn how to assign IP addresses to end devices
 To learn how to connect end devices to Hub and Switch
 To learn how to exchange messages/data between different end devices using Hub and
Switch
 To highlight the difference between Hub and Switch

Experiment Procedure
 Open the Cisco packet tracer.
 Select the six PCS (PC0 TO PC5) and router and hub.

1
 Connect the PC0, PCI, PC2 with SWITCH and PC3, PC4, PC5 with HUB using auto
connect.

 Click on PC select the desktop option then write the IP address.

 IP address of PC0 is 10.0.0.1, IP address of PC1 is 10.0.0.2, IP address of PC3 is

10.0.0.3

2

3
 IP address of PC3 is 20.0.0.4, IP address of PC4 is 20.0.0., and IP address of PC5 is
20.0.0.3

4

 For checking LAN connection successfully sending a message we send a message from
PC0 to PC2 and PC3 to PC5.

5

 Check the difference between switch and router click on simulation.

6
 The difference between hub and switch is SWITCH sends the data to correct destination
but HUB broadcast the data
