Proposal

The student proposes a documentary project on the impacts of COVID-19 on gymnasts and the gymnastics community. They plan to interview coaches and gymnasts of various ages to discuss issues like lost training time, mental health challenges, and feelings of isolation. The student intends to film b-roll footage of gymnasts training in unconventional locations if gym access is limited. They recognize the sensitivity of discussing mental health and will ensure interviewees are comfortable. The student provides a detailed production schedule and evaluation plan to help them stay organized and produce high-quality work that demonstrates their skills.

Project proposal
February 2nd 2021

Rationale:
Throughout the whole of my time at The Henley College I feel I have learnt a lot about my
strengths and weaknesses and my skill set has become more varied. I am now able to use a
camera in more adventurous ways which has helped me to make more creative and better-
quality videos. I have also improved my editing skills which help to bring my productions to
an even better standard. The thing I struggle with most is the written work. It still needs
some work, but I have improved in this area throughout my time at college. For my final
project I have decided to do a documentary as I feel that this will show the skills, I have
learnt the most. I will be able to be creative with my b-roll filming and editing which will
show my strengths. I will also be able to learn more by creating a documentary because
there are so many factors that go into a factual programme such as interviews and b-roll so I
by doing all of these skills I will be learning more about them. Also, because I am doing it all
myself, I need to learn on the job so that I can produce an entertaining programme. I am
hoping to produce a creative and informative documentary while also expanding my skills
and showing myself what I can do and what I have learnt.

Project Concept:
For my final project I have decided to produce a documentary about the impacts that covid
has had on gymnasts and the gymnastics community such as mental health issues or loss of
training resulting in loss of skills. I am hoping that my documentary will create awareness of
the issues that I will discuss, and it might show other gymnasts that they are not alone in
this tough time. I will talk about how it has affected all ages throughout gymnastics, and I
will get opinions from all kinds of people including coaches and professional gymnasts. To
create this, I will use a range of resources. Hopefully I will be able to film in person with my
camera and tripod in a location that matches the theme. However, if this is not possible, I
will perform my interviews via a zoom call. To make up for this I will need to create
entertaining and exciting b-roll so that the documentary is still interesting to watch. I will do
this by filming a few gymnasts performing skills in strange locations like in an empty town
centre or a park as well as in their gardens and living rooms. For the interviews I will be
talking to some coaches and also some gymnasts. When interviewing the gymnasts, I will
need to be cautious when talking about their mental health as some people don’t feel
comfortable talking about this issue. To make sure I make them feel comfortable I will talk
them through the purpose of my documentary and make sure they understand the kind of
things I will be asking them. If they are still not happy about answering my questions, I will
interview someone else.

Evaluation:
Throughout my research process I will evaluate my work by checking Viibe and checking my
production schedule and research planning. I will check that I have done everything I
needed to and that it is all at the best standard it could be. I will then ask for feedback and
correct anything that is not yet perfect. When doing my planning I will go through a similar
process. I will spend a large amount of time on each piece of work to make sure they are all
at the same standard. When filming I will evaluate by watching what I have done at the end
of the day and then correcting anything that isn’t good enough. I will also ask for peer and
teacher feedback as an extra pair of eyes is always helpful. I will record this process by
producing behind the scenes footage. If it results in any changes, I will talk about this on my
website and during my weekly blog. Each week I will be writing my weekly blog and
discussing any areas for improvement and how I will do this. When editing I will take
screenshots to show my process. After completing a rough edit I will show my client and
then make any changes that they suggest. At the end of the unit when it comes to
evaluation, I need to make sure I evaluate all the good and the bad. I will re-read all of my
work and this will show me what I did well and what I could’ve done better. My aim for this
unit is to complete all of my work to the best of my ability and showcase all that I have
learnt throughout my time on the course. Therefore, I believe that following these
evaluation steps will be very important for doing this.

Project action plan and timetable:

To ensure I remain organised throughout this unit I am making a detailed production
schedule. I will then print this off and put it near my workspace. This will allow me to be able
to stick to the schedule so that everything gets completed. I will also then feel confident
that I will complete everything on time. I will have agreed a set time for each day with
myself which I will use for work and then a time when I stop so that I can maintain good
mental health throughout the process. I believe that this will make me work harder as I will
have no distractions and I will be focused. The first week I am spending doing the context
which will help me with all other sections of the process. Once it is all complete, I will get
teacher feedback and the correct anything over the weekend. The next few weeks I will do
all of my research. This will include sending surveys and performing focus groups so I may
need extra time for this section of the unit. Then I will move onto my planning. I will use my
research and context to help me with this. Once it is complete, I will ask for peer and
teacher feedback and then correct or add anything that they suggest. I will then spend the
next few weeks filming my B-roll and interviews. I will allow myself enough time for re
shoots and spare days at the end in case I cannot film for any reason. Once it is complete, I
move onto the editing and this is when I will ask for most of my feedback. I will send my
teacher rough edits and finished edits and then add anything that they suggest. Towards the
end of the unit when the edit is complete, I will finish by doing my evaluation. I need to
ensure that this is at a high standard as this is the last thing I will do.

Proposed research sources and bibliography:

For my primary research I will conduct surveys and focus groups. I believe that these are
important because I can ask specific questions about my production to my target audience
and then use this information for my planning. For my secondary research I will use
websites to find out the statistics and information that I need. I will then find similar
documentaries which I will watch and analyse and then apply this information to my
planning. Throughout my secondary research I will do Harvard referencing to show where
my information has come from.
