A SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 9

I.OBJECTIVE:
At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to:
1. illustrate how energy from volcanoes may be tapped for human use.

II. SUBJECT - MATTER:

A. TOPIC: Energy Flowing from Inside the Earth
Subtopic: “How to Generate Electricity in a Geothermal Power Plant?”
B. CONCEPTS:
a. One way on how geothermal energy is generated is by means of geothermal power
plants.
b. In geothermal power plants, the heat from deep inside the Earth is used to produce
steam to generate electricity.
c. To harness this energy, deep wells are drilled into the earth. Then, cold water is
pumped down into these wells. When the water goes through cracks in the rock, it is
heated up. Upon its return to the surface, it has transformed into steam and hot
water. This energy is then used to power generators.

Meta strips of steps on how power plant works
Pictures of each step on how power plant works
Worksheets
Manila paper, paste and double-sided tape
Laptop and Projector
E. SKILLS: observing, identifying, illustrating, rationalizing, inferring and analyzing
F. VALUES INTEGRATED: Cooperation in group activities and appreciation on the advantages
produced by energy flowing from inside the Earth
III. LEARNING TASKS:
A. ELICIT
By groups, let the students complete a picture puzzle to unlock the day’s topic.
Ask: “What the picture reveals?”

B. ENGAGE:
Let the students work in groups. Given the meta-strips of the processes involved on how
energy is transformed into electricity, give time for the students ( 5 minutes) to complete the
task assigned to them inside the envelope. Let a student volunteer to read the task aloud in the
class.
Ask the Key Questions:
a. What are the different processes involved in the geothermal power plant? How is energy
transformed?
b. Arrange the processes in chronological order.
c. What made you conclude that it is the first process? The last process?
Let the students present their output after the time allotted.

C. EXPLORE:
Ask the Essential Question:
“How is energy from a volcano tapped for human use?”
Show a prototype of how a geothermal power plant works through some video clips:
a. Animation of how geothermal power plant works.

D. EXPLAIN:
Ask Key Questions:
1. How does thermal energy converted into mechanical energy?
2. How about the mechanical energy in the turbine transferred into mechanical energy in a
generator?
3. How is electrical energy generated?
4. Is geothermal energy important? Why?

E. ELABORATE:
Summarize the processes involved in Geothermal Power Plants.
1. Let the students identify the processes on how geothermal plant works by using a graphic
organizer.
2. There will be two boxes presented. Box A includes pictures of processes on how geothermal
energy works and Box B has meta strips of the description of these processes.
3. Each group member will pick and post these items using the graphic organizer and present
this in class.
IV.EVALUATE:
Illustrate how electricity is generated through a geothermal power. Use a flowchart to present
the processes involved. (Use independently performed worksheets.)

Below is a text version of the animation  How a Geothermal Power

Plant Works.

This animation is meant to convey in simple terms what happens in

the operation of a geothermal power plant. Aspects such as
exploration, resource verification, site preparation, construction,
geothermal fluid processing, and power conditioning are not shown
or described in the interest of simplicity, and so the viewer can
more readily grasp the basic operating concepts.

WELLS ARE DRILLED

A production well is drilled into a known geothermal reservoir.

Typically, an injection well is also drilled to return used geothermal
fluids to the geothermal reservoir. Hot geothermal fluids flow
through pipes to a power plant for use in generating electricity.

STEAM TURNS THE TURBINE

Hot, pressurized geothermal fluid, or a secondary working fluid, is

allowed to expand rapidly and provide rotational or mechanical
energy to turn the turbine blades on a shaft.

THE TURBINE DRIVES THE ELECTRIC GENERATOR

Rotational energy from the turning turbine shaft is used directly to

spin magnets inside a large coil and create electrical current. The
turbine and generator are the primary pieces of equipment used to
convert geothermal energy to electrical energy.

TRANSMISSION - POWER LINES DELIVER ELECTRICITY

Electrical current from the generator is sent to a step-up

transformer outside the power plant. Voltage is increased in the
transformer and electrical current is transmitted over power lines to
homes, buildings, and businesses.
Chemical energy in the coal converted to thermal energy in the exhaust gases of
combustion. Thermal energy of the exhaust gases converted into thermal energy of
steam through the heatexchanger. ... Mechanical energy of the turbine converted to
electrical energy by the generator, which is the ultimate output.

The turbine converts the kinetic energy of falling water into mechanical

energy.Generator. Connected to the turbine by shafts and possibly gears so when
theturbine spins it causes the generator to spin also. Converts the mechanical
energy from the turbine into electric energy.

Electricity is most often generated at a power plant by electromechanical generators,

primarily driven by heat engines fueled by combustion or nuclear fission but also by other
means such as the kinetic energyof flowing water and wind. Other energy sources
include solar photovoltaics and geothermal power.

From prehistoric times, humans have utilized thegeothermal energy that flows freely

from underground reservoirs to the Earth's surface. ... Heating and cooling buildings
via geothermal heat pumps that utilize shallow sources; Heating structures with direct-
use applications; and. Generating electricity through indirect use ..
Today, at some locations around the country, geothermal energy is used to generate
electricity, or geothermal heat is used directly for applications such as space heating,
