This document provides instructions for making two-toned toe-up ankle socks with a kitty chart design. The socks are made using double pointed needles and fingering weight yarn in two contrasting colors with a small amount of a third color for the nose. The toe is constructed using Judy's Magic Cast-On and increases every other round until the desired stitch count is reached. The heel is formed using a short row construction where stitches are wrapped and turned on alternate rows until all stitches are worked.

The materials needed are double pointed needles size 1 (2.25 mm), fingering weight yarn in two contrasting colors for the cat design and background plus a small amount of a third color for the nose. Scissors, a darning needle and stitch markers are also required.

The toe is constructed using Judy's Magic Cast-On to cast on 12 stitches to each of two double pointed needles for a total of 24 stitches. Increases are made every other round by knitting into the front and back of the first and last stitches until 32 stitches are reached on each needle for a total of 64 stitches.

These are two-toned toe-up ankle socks with a kitty chart. Can make
two-of-a-kind for ultra matchiness or use contrasting yarns to make
complementary kitties.

1
Materials

Needles: Double pointed needles, size 1 (2.25 mm)

Yarn: MC and CC in fingering weight yarn for cat and background, these should be
contrasting enough that eyes and whiskers are visible on the kitty’s face (I used
Frabjous Fibers Cheshire Cat in Too Much Pepper and Goat’s Beard)
<1 yard of pink/red fingering weight yarn for kitty nose
Notions: Scissors, Darning needle, Stitch marker

Gauge

Can be adjusted by changing either yarn weight or needle size, 32 stitches should be
10% smaller than the width of the foot.

Directions

TOE (KITTY):
With MC and two DPNs, use Judy’s Magic Cast-on to CO 12 st on each of two DPNs.
Round 1: Knit
Round 2: *K1, m1, k to last st on needle, m1, k1; repeat from * to end of round. (4
st increased)
Round 3: *K1, m1, k to last st on needle, m1, k1; repeat from * to end of round. (4
st increased)

Repeat these three rounds until you have 32 st on each DPN (64 st total).

Redistribute stitches onto DPNs or other needle of choice to continue in the round.
Begin chart in the round (see page 4), use only first 32 stitches (half of the stitches)
for chart. For the other half of the stitches (other 32 st) knit in MC, these non-
charted stitches will become the side of the sock where the heel will go.

Note regarding chart execution:

You can knit the chart however you’d like! Via duplicate stitching or intarsia in the
round!

FOOT:
Once the chart is finished, continue knitting in the round in the CC until the sock
measures 1.5” less than the length of the foot. (So if the foot is 8” knit until sock
measures 6.5” in length)
Knit across the charted 32 stiches, and place them on hold – until the heel is
completed.

HEEL:
The non-charted 32 stitches will become the heel and are knit flat and in short rows
as follows:
Knit 29 st, wrap and turn.
Purl until 3 st left on needle, wrap and turn.
