Marketing Management II
Situation: Daan is a computer buff. He loves to surf the internet and try all available
applications. Daan also does web design and programming, among others. In one of these
computer explorations, Daan discovered a virus that destroys the computer motherboard. To test
his discovery, Daan surreptitiously installed the virus in his friend Kael’s PC. After a week, Kael
broke the sad news to Daan. His PC has bogged down and he needs to buy a new motherboard.
Daan finds himself torn between whether to tell Kael or not.
In this case, there are certain violations from the 10 commandments that Daan have performed
which yields an uncertainty to his friend Kael. To be more specific, he used a computer “in ways
that doesn’t ensure respect for fellow humans,” a violation to the last commandment or the 10th
commandment. Using his expertise or advanced skills in an unfavorable manner causes
destruction to other people. And thus, this required a relative responsibility. Although, given the
fact that he didn’t know what would be the result of trying his discovery, still, it is not right to do
it without even asking the authority from her friend. He’d supposed to be extra careful even if he
didn’t know that this could carry out an effect or not. In simple terms, her action doesn’t even
show respect to the rightful owner of the PC that he used for trial and error. Furthermore, in a
more personal manner, we could also say that he also violated the first commandment which is
“to not use a computer to harm other people.” In one way or another, he caused harm to other
people in such a way that his friend's feelings got hurt once he knew that his PC was bogged
down and that he would be able to buy a new motherboard. The first commandment tells us not
to use our computers with the purpose of hurting and harming other people which was basically
violated by Daan.
2. If you were Daan, will you tell Kael the truth or not? Explain.
We can never deny the fact that if we were Daan, it would also be hard for us to decide whether
to tell Kael the truth or not. However, we need to tell him the truth even knowing that he might
get hurt and expresses his anger towards what we’ve done. It will just take us a very long way
after we realize that it is the appropriate thing to do. It might be hard to tell him but he has the
right to know it at least. So, if I were Daan, I would prefer telling him what happened and what
causes her PC to crash, that it was all because of my fault, a product of my poor decision. I have
to be accountable for the action I chose to take. Even if the underlying consequence would be
worse than what I’ve expected to. Perhaps, I would just be helping him purchase a new
motherboard to at least recoup what I have ruined and more importantly, gain the trust of my
friend again.
3. If you were Kael and Daan told you the truth, what will you do?
Of course, as a normal response, I would be shocked and get upset for what he did. Maybe I’ll
distance myself from him if I feel some sort of anger. Because my anger will do no good to the
situation anyway. However, I would give him time to explain himself about what really
happened. From the given situation above, I would be too much understandable and I will
appreciate his honesty from confessing the truth however I would observe his actions and an
apology will never be enough. He must show me that he changed already and will never do the
same actions again. And with that, I will be able to forgive him and gain my trust in him again.
