EE511 - Assignment on Module 6:

Instruction: Copy and answer 19-1, 19-2, 19-3, 19-4, 19-5 on page 699 of Module
6.

19-1. What electrical code is universally used in the United States?

The National Electrical Code (NEC), or NFPA 70, is a regionally adoptable
standard for the safe installation of electrical wiring and equipment in
the United States.
19-2. Describe the following branch circuits and where each is used:
a. Individual - Individual Branch Circuit
Installed in permanent locations such as an electric range, a clothes
dryer, or an air conditioner. These circuits usually lead directly from
the distribution panel to the appliance and do not serve any other
electrical devices. These circuits can be any amperage size.
b. General purpose - are 120 volts circuits used for supplying lighting
fixtures and receptacle outlets for most small portable appliances. There
are usually a number of general purpose branch circuits supplying lights
and outlets in different rooms around a residence or commercial or
industrial building
c. Appliance - A appliance branch circuit is an electric circuit
designed for powering electric appliances and devices through plug in
receptacles, with its own circuit breaker.
19-3. Describe a split wired circuit.
19-4. How many circuits are required to accommodate kitchen appliances in an
average size home?
You can bring your wiring up to code and make your time in the kitchen
much more convenient! A kitchen requires at least 7 electrical circuits
to properly handle the basic elements. Something to keep in mind is if an
appliance has a motor, it should have its own electrical circuit.
19-5. When selecting the panelboard size, what considerations for the future
should be taken into account?
The panelboard is an important factor for selecting a panelboard. The
rating of the panelboard is determined by the main bus current-carrying
capacity. The correct rating should be determined before the panelboard
is selected. The size of the panelboard should also be taken into
consideration before choosing one
