Basketball Court

This lesson involves measuring and calculating areas and perimeters of a basketball court. Students will measure the length and width of the court, diameter and radius of the center circle, and dimensions of other lines and boundaries. They will then use the measurements to calculate areas, circumferences, and amounts of paint and stain needed to refinish the court. Sample solutions show the step-by-step work for some of the calculation questions.

Lesson Summary 1. Measure the length and width of basketball court
2. Find the area and perimeter of basketball court
3. Measure the diameter of center circle
4. Find the area and circumference of center circle
5. Measure free throw box and semi-circle radius and find area of
lane

7. Figure how many cans of stain and paint are needed

Placement within Development, assessment or conclusion

Unit
Materials Needed The materials required would be a basketball court or diagram, tape
measure, paper, calculator, pencil, information on how many square feet
a gallon of stain will cover, and information on how many square feet a
gallon of paint will cover.
Problem Situation Coach Holmes wants to refinish the basketball court. He needs to know
(for students) how much stain he will need. He also needs to know how much paint
he will need to paint the center circle and the semi-circles of the free
throw lane.
Questions for 1. How long is the basketball court?
Students
2. How wide is the basketball court?

3. What are the perimeter and area of the basketball court?

4. What are the diameter and radius of the center circle?

5. What are the circumference and area of the center circle?

6. What is the area of the free throw boundaries?

7. If 1 _________ of stain covers _______ square feet. How much
stain is needed to cover the floor?

8. If 1 _______ of paint covers _______square inches, how many

cans are needed to paint the lines?

Sample Solutions 1. How long is the basketball court?

The basketball on the diagram is 90 feet long.

2. How wide is the basketball court?

The basketball court on the diagram is 50 feet wide.

3. What are the perimeter and area of the basketball court?

The formula for perimeter is P = 2L +2W.

P= 2(90) + 2(50)
P=180 + 100
P= 280 ft

The formula for area is A = L • W.

A = 90 • 50
A = 4500 ft²п

4. What are the diameter and radius of the center circle ?

Diameter = 12 feet Radius = 6 feet

5. What are the circumference and area of the center circle?

The formula for circumference is C = п•d.
C = п • 12
C = 3.14 •12
C = 37.68 feet

The formula for area of a circle is A = п • r ².

A = п • 6²
A = 3.14 • 36
A = 113.04 feet ²

6. What is the area of the free throw boundaries?

The formula for the area of a rectangle is A = L • W.
A = 19 •12
A = 228 feet ²
7. If 1 gallon of stain covers 350 square feet. How much stain is
needed to cover the floor?

The area of the basketball court is 4500 feet². To determine how

much stain is needed you divide the area by 350 ft² since 1 gallon
covers that much.

4500 ft² • 1 gallon = 12.86 gallons

350 ft²

You would need to buy 13 gallons to cover the basketball court.

8. If 1 gallon of paint covers 400 square feet , how many cans are
needed to paint center circle and the semi-circles on the free throw
lane?

The area of the center circle is 113.04 feet ². To determine how

much paint is needed you would divide the area by 400 feet² since
1 gallon covers that much.

113.04 ft² • 1 gallon = .28 gallon

400 ft²

If the students notice the semi-circles, if put together, would form

the
same area as the center circle. Therefore, the area of the semi-
circles
would be 113.04 feet put together. They would take .28 gallons of
paint also.

.28 gallon + .28 gallon = .56 gallon

You would have to purchase 1 gallon of paint for the center circle
and
semi-circles on the free throw lanes.

Scaffolding 1. What is the formula for finding the perimeter and area of a
(Supporting) rectangle?
Questions
2. What is the formula for finding the circumference and area of a
circle?

Extension Questions 1. What is the volume of a man’s basketball?

2. What is the volume of a woman’s basketball?

3. How much would it cost to redo the floor if stain cost

_________ a gallon, and paint cost ________a gallon.

4. How much would it cost to redo the floor if stain cost ________
a quart, and paint cost ______a quart.

5. How much paint would it take to paint all the lines on the court
if they are 2 inches wide?

6. What would be the area of the court inside the three point line?
