CHAPTER I
Introduction

Young students have diverse dreams and interests in life. There is an old age which inspires
people to succeed: “if there is a will, there is a way.” In choosing a career, suitability to the
interest of the students is given importance. Students must know on what degree to pursue in
college, one that interest them and must also fit their abilities so that it will not be hard for them
to choose the right career path.
Being adolescent can be extremely lonely. It is not unusual to have a feeling that there is
no one turn to when problems come arise. This is the stage where major decisions and deep
concerns affect the courses of their lives. Most adolescents are pressured to perform and succeed,
which experience severe stress in meeting these expectations (Psychology.com, 2017). students
need a lot of professional advice especially when it comes in choosing their careers. It is in this
period, where students are advised to prepare for their future worthwhile occupations. Choosing
the perfect career that will fit is one of the most important and crucial decision that every person
has to make. This can be one of the measures whether an individual will be successful in the
future or not. At this stage, self-realization, role try-outs, occupational explorations in schools,
and finding the first job is the tentative step.
It is this stage when teenager needs guidance in the proper selection of their desired
career. Where, they will arrive at the right decision considering their innate capacities,
educational privilege offered to the students and other resources that society makes available for
them to be more efficient and effective (DepEd, 2017).

A big part of your life is decided by your career choices. After all, you invest much of
your time. It is not easy to choose a job or career. It is even more critical that we take the next
step, if we find out that you have chosen the wrong career. According to Tami Glasco (2020),
Choosing a career is one of the most important decisions most of us ever make. Depending on
the individual, the choice of career may be decided by following in the footsteps of a parent or
taking over a family business. For others, it is the pursuit of a passion or lifelong dream. Whether
your path is clear or uncertain, careful planning may lead to the job of a lifetime. Senior high
school students need a lot of professional advice especially when it comes in choosing their
careers. It must be demandable so that they have a good future because prepairing for the future
is hard nowadays.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter is to present the main purpose of the literature review as what the study is all
about. It represents the surrounding situations or problem that prompted the researcher to
undertake the study. It also analyzes some studies and materials from the Internet to provide
sufficient background and information essential for the accomplishment of this study. It sought
to collect claims of previous studies about Factors Affecting Career choice of College students.

According to the study conducted by Siguan Jr. (2004), it was found out that the students'
self- concept showed no significant influence on their career preferences. The academic
achievements of students proved to be significant related to their career preferences. The school
where students came from had no influence on their choice of career. He recommends that a
more improved and functional guidance provided in school to help students make sound career
choices. The guidance services in school must be collaborative efforts of the administrator,
guidance counselors, and teachers. Classroom teachers are encouraged to do their best in
improving teaching learning processes, considering that academic achievement of students
influences their career preferences.

Another study conducted by Almerino (2003), it was found out that a big picture of a big
family with low educational attainment and inadequate investment was the sole foundation of
choosing a course, which was psychologically motivated. The respondent's level of preferred
intelligence did not match their chosen course. This could be drawn from the required level of
the course in contrast with their level of preferred intelligence. The necessity of developing a
career development program was needed in order to prevent any misfits and to assist students in
the process of crystallizing their career in life. She recommended that this program be effectively
implemented. Personal interests, abilities, skills, and values are the most influential factors in
coming chosen occupation by the participants according to Pabiton (2007). These imply that like
other graduating students in high school, the participants seemed to have chosen occupation. She
also noted that the students will be given all the chances to learn and develop the skills and
attitudes required for various occupations. She recommends that career counselors could give
more emphasis on this environmental factor during individual and small group career counseling.

According to the study conducted by Garcez (2007), it was found out that by increasing
career development activities, which includes setting career goals, students had a higher self-
esteem. Maybe even more important, however, is that students were more satisfied about the
education they were receiving. This will, in turn, hopefully lead to students having a deeper
desire and commitment to succeed in their education. Another outcome of a higher self-esteem,
is that those students chose more difficult goals than students with low self-esteems. She noted
that excellent detailed plan for teaching parents and teachers how to teach young students to set
career goals. The plan requires a total community effort through educators, parents, and
businesses. Students must be given an opportunity to identify and explore their desired careers.
They can accomplish this through the "School to Work Transition" or "Job Shadowing
Program." Through the cooperative efforts of the entire community, students can identify career
choices, set career goals, and have higher self-esteems at an early age. Ultimately, they will
further their education and have a better chance of succeeding in the "do or die" world in which
we live.

According to Elmer (2001), career planning is life goal-setting. Without such a plan, it is
like making a journey to an unfamiliar destination without a map. He proposed a Career Planning
Guide that will help the students in choosing their appropriate course from planning a career,
steps in planning career, goal-setting and self-understanding. Also, it reveals that guidance and
counseling is intervention of underemployment individuals and career preparedness must be
initiated.

In the Philippines, initiatives for career guidance started when the Philippine government
got alarmed with the growing number of unemployed college graduates and some who got
employed in areas not related to their specialization (Santamaria, J.D. 2008) as cited by Braza
and Guillo (2015). According to Pascual (2014), “Unemployment rate in the country is
commonly associated with the misfit graduates produced by universities and colleges and the
workforce needed by different companies. The wrong choice of course taken by most of high
school students adds to the unemployment and underemployment rate of newly graduate
students. With this the study determined the factors affecting the fourth-year high school
students’ career preference of University of Rizal System’ Laboratory School in Morong Rizal.”

The students’ lack of career information, and wrong decisions was found to be the most
contributing factor to the country’s problem on unemployment and job mismatch and
underemployment. As cited by Braza and Guillo (2015), the report of Labor Force Survey done
in January 2012 revealed that there are around 7.1 million underemployed Filipinos or an
underemployment of 19.4 percent, a result of congested basic education system and unassisted
career decision making. With the given facts, there is a need for an enhanced educational system
and career guidance activities that will help students choose the appropriate career oath based on
their interest and competency, as well as the market demand must be strengthened.

Although studies shown by Braza & Guillo (2015) and Pascual (2014) are relevant to the
present study, mentioning about unemployment with regard to students’ career preferences, this
study will highlight the “undecidability” which is a prior state of the mind before one can make a
decision which can be right or wrong. The objective of the study is not to identify the factors
affecting their career choice but rather the factors affecting the students’ undecidability. It is
focused more on the reasons why students are incapable of making decision in terms of their
career choices.
