Highways and Traffic Engineering Part-2 SEQ

Final Examination: Winter 2020 Dated: June 25, 2020

Civil Engineering Department Time: 16:40 – 17:50
University of Lahore, Lahore Time Allowed: 1 hrs. 10 min
Total questions: 4

Q.No.1 Attempt any of the parts (a) or (b) Time: 15 min., Marks: 10 CLO2, C2

(a) Describe briefly ten major design control and criteria of highways.

A driver running at 80 kph at downgrade of 2.0% suddenly sees an obstacle

ahead. If the brake efficiency is 35% and driver’s reaction time is 3 seconds.
(b) Calculate minimum safe stopping site distance SSD with a longitudinal
coefficient of friction at 0.35.

Q.No.2 Attempt any of the parts (a) or (b) Time: 15 min., Marks: 10 CLO3, C3

The structural design of rigid pavement is governed by number of factors.

(a) Explain each.

A two lane, two-way road with a present day daily traffic of 1800 commercial
vehicles, is to be strengthened for growing traffic needs. The vehicle damaging
factor is given at 4.5 with a traffic growth rate of 15 percent annually. The
construction period is 3 years and the pavement needs to serve for another 20
(b) years after completion of works. Calculate;

(i)- Traffic volume (commercial vehicles) at start of operation

(ii) Cumulative standard axles (msa) to be used in design.

Q.No.3 Attempt any of the parts (a) or (b) Time: 15 min., Marks: 10 CLO3, C3

What do you understand by surface drainage and cross drainage? Please

(a) explain briefly some of the cross drainage structures and their effectiveness.

(i) Given that 60 vehicles pass a given point in 2 minute and traverse a
length of 2.5 kilometer, what is the flow, density, and time
headway?
(b) (ii) The spot speeds (expressed in km/hr.) observed at a road section
are 60, 65, 40, 80, 40, 50, 60,70, 50 and 40. Find space mean speed,
time mean speed and the he median speed (expressed in km/hr.).

Q.No.4 Attempt any of the parts (a) or (b) Time: 15 min., Marks: 10 CLO3, C3

Explain different types of traffic control devices, when and where are these
(a) used?

Let the cycle time of an intersection is 90 seconds, the green time for a phase
is 36 seconds, and the corresponding yellow time is 6 seconds. If the saturation
(b) headway is 3 seconds/vehicle, the start-up lost time is 3 seconds/phase, and
the clearance lost time is 2 second/phase, find capacity of the movement per
lane?
