Lesson 4

Microsoft Excel provides tools to manipulate, organize, and present numeric data through formulas, sorting and filtering functions, and different chart types. Formulas allow calculations using cell references and functions perform predefined calculations using arguments. Excel features like sorting, filtering, bar charts, line charts, pie charts, and 3D charts help visualize data trends and comparisons.

Lesson 4

How Do I Use Advanced Excel Tools to Process and Present Data?

Learning Objectives:
•Construct formulas to manipulate numeric data in an Excel worksheet
•Organize or narrow down data using the Sort and Filter features in MS Excel
•Set up the Chart function of Excel to represent numeric data in multiple formats
Microsoft Excel
1. _______________ provides an automated way of displaying any statistical data. It can be used to automatically
compute for several factors that are not easy to notice especially when faced by a large data. Microsoft Excel
includes several arithmetic and basic functions that help you compute faster.
2. Parts of MS Excel

3. Formulas
The P E M D A S Order of Operations
•P –_______________ ()
•E –_______________ ^
•M –_______________ *
•D –_______________ /
•A –_______________ +
•S –_______________ -
Formulas and Functions:
4. _______________ has a feature that allows you to calculate values from specified cell addresses.
5. A _______________ is combination of a column letter and a row number.
6. The cell or set of cells involved in a formula is known as a _______________.
Functions
7. A _______________ is a predefined formula in Excel that performs calculations for a specific value using
reference cells. A function consists of the equal signs (=), the function name (an example of this is SUM), and one
or more arguments.
8. A _______________ is a range of cell addresses or any input that you provide to a function.
9. Using a function. These are examples of functions you would usually use:
1. SUM -=SUM(A1:A5)
2. AVERAGE -=AVERAGE(D2:D9)
3. COUNT -=COUNT(E3:E10)
4. MAX -=MAX(E4:E10)
5. MIN -=MIN(E4:E10)
Sorting and Filtering
Types of Sorting:
10. •_______________ –sort all data in your worksheet by one column. Related information is kept together when
sorted.
11. •_______________ –sorts the data in a range of cells, which can be helpful when working with a sheet that
contains several tables.
Filtering
12. One of the feature of excel is to narrow data in your worksheet allowing you to view only the information you
need. This feature is called _______________.
Charts
13. A _______________ is a graphical representation of your workbook data that’s easier to visualize for comparison
and trends.
14. Types of charts:
•_______________ –this chart uses vertical bars to represent data. They are most frequently used for comparing
information.
•_______________ –this chart is ideal for showing trends. The data points are connected by lines, making it
easier to see the increase or decrease of value over time.
•_______________ –this chart is used to compare proportions. It depicts the values that make up a percentage of
the whole and are shown as slices of pie.
•_______________ –this chart is just like the column chart but uses horizontal bar instead.
•_______________ –this chart is like the line chart, except the areas under the lines are shaded.
•_______________–this chart allows you to display in 3D landscape. It lets you see a variety of information at the
same time. This works best with large data sets.
