Welcome to the Music 8 Self-Learning Module (SLM) Module on (Making of Improvised


Musical Instrument of Southeast Asia)!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators both
from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping
the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their
personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their
needs and circumstances.

Hi! Are you musically incline or can play any kind of instrument?
How did you learn from it? I know you really love music. Good thing! because
it can boost your confidence and use it as your asset.

This module will help you how to make a simple improvise


accompaniment or homemade instruments adopting the style from different
countries of Southeast Asia. It depends on your creativity and country you
want to choose. In this lesson, it will be more challenging and give more ideas
especially in creating and producing sounds. Let’s begin!

copper, it consists of two kinds of metal, the sound produced is much sharper than
if only one is used.

resonator. The pieces of wood are calibrated to the desired pitch.
____________________3. “Hand drum" or "clay drum") is a short goblet drum from
Cambodia, approximately 40 centimeters tall and 15 centimeters wide at the top.

____________________4. It produces a bright and expressive sound when played. It is


made of wood, with brass strings that are laid across the instrument.

____________________5. Sound is produced by the vibration of a string or strings that


are stretched between fixed points.
____________________7. "Moon Lute", a two-stringed Vietnamese traditional musical
instrument. It is used in both folk and classical music, and remains popular
throughout Vietnam.
____________________8. Sound is produced by vibrating air. Free – early organs,
accordion, harmonica.

____________________9. is a mouth organ of Lao origin whose pipes, which are


usually made of bamboo, are connected with a small, hollowed-out hardwood
reservoir into which air is blown.

____________________10. A mouth organ made from a gourd with bamboo pipes in


northern Borneo. It originated in the state of Sabah and is played by both male and
female indigenous people in Sabah, Malaysia.

What is It

The music of Southeast Asia has been present since 2nd – 3rd Century
BC. Music is an important part of their lives because they use it for rituals,
ceremonies, courting, entertainment, etc.

Instruments in Southeast Asia can be classified according to


Hornbostel - Sachs classification.

materials that look and sound similar to the musical instruments
discussed. The class will spare in two groups but individual output. Each
group must consist at least 2 classifications of musical instruments.
Show and play them in any songs that you have learned. Draw first your
