I. LISTENING
INTRODUCTION

40 minutes (30+10 minutes)

 The actual listening takes 30 minutes, but you then have 10 minutes to transfer your
answers to an answer sheet. You have time to look at the questions and check your
answers.
 There are four sections which get increasingly difficult.
 There are 10 questions in each section.
 You hear each recording once only.
 Topics cover everyday social matters and subjects related to educational or training
situations. The first two sections are concerned with social needs. The final two sections are
concerned with situations related more closely to educational or training contexts.

The Listening component is the same for both Academic and General Training versions.

 NOTES:
 A range of English accents and dialects are used in the recordings.
 You will be given EXAMPLES of any unfamiliar question types.
 Care should be taken when writing answers on the answer sheet as POOR SPELLING
AND GRAMMAR ARE PENALIZED.
 You will hear each section ONCE ONLY.
 The questions get GRADUALLY HARDER, but all the marks have the same value.
 You will get 1 MARK FOR EACH CORRECT ANSWER up to a maximum of 40 MARKS

STRATEGIES FOR ANSWERING LISTENING QUESTIONS

A. Fill-IN SPACE QUESTIONS:


1) Read the topic and understand what it is about.

2) Read the questions carefully and underline the key words or the clues.

3) Predict the answer and guess what part of speech is needed for each space

(noun, adjective, verb, adverb or number).

4) Listen carefully and look for the clues to find the answers. Remember that the

clues may be different on the audio script (Look for synonyms or similar ideas)

5) Write the words EXACTLY AS YOU LISTEN TO THEM (no synonyms).

6) Observe the MAXIMUM number of words you can use.

B. Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs):


1) Read the topic and understand what it is about.

2) Read the questions and options carefully and underline the key words or the

clues.

3) Listen carefully and look for the clues to find the answers. Remember that the

clues may be different on the audio script (Look for synonyms or similar ideas)

4) You may use the strategy of SELECTIONG THE CORRECT OPTION or DELETING
THE WRONG OPTION for finding the correct answer.

C. Maps / diagrams:
1) Look at the map/diagram carefully.

2) Find the starting point.

3) Observe the campus (if there is any) and locate the directions.

4) Follow the directions on the audio accurately until you get to the required
designation.

REMEMBER: The maps or diagrams questions could be filling-in or multiple-choice questions.
