Assignment Summary
For this assignment, you will create a procedural document relevant to your interests, such as cooking,
playing a sport, or working on a hobby, and then model the procedure to a group of peers. You will
provide a purpose for your procedural text, create a list of resources, show the steps in the process, offer
helpful formatting, and possibly include an optional diagram. In addition to the procedural text, you will
document any questions you ask yourself about the process, with the goal of clarifying meaning for
readers in your text.
Background Information
Procedural texts provide the reasons to do a task and directions on how to complete it. Often, they
contain text features to help readers follow instructions correctly. These include organizational features,
such as headings, numbering, and bulleting. Other features, such as styles, fonts, and bolding, can
provide emphasis. Diagrams, illustrations, or charts can support written instructions. Procedural texts may
also contain technical terms that may be unfamiliar.
Writers can use the following strategy to write an effective procedural text.
State the purpose of the procedure.
List any materials and tools needed.
Present the steps in the process in a logical, step-by-step sequence.
Use reader-friendly formatting, such as headings, and numbered or bulleted lists.
Write short, clear sentences.
Provide a diagram or illustration if it will make the written procedure more clear.
Asking pertinent questions about a procedural text can allow readers to clarify the meaning of the text,
and help writers anticipate the needs and obstacles of readers.
Materials
