Facebook’s Influence on Society
With the use of Facebook spreading all over the world, Facebook is no longer just a social
network. Instead, it has become a culture. It is a culture that is affecting every one of us
who is using Facebook, or even those who are not. Undeniably, Facebook has had a great
influence on our society. It has changed our habits, the way we communicate, and the way
people start and run a business.
One of the very obvious effects is that people are more curious about what their friends
are doing nowadays. We update our Facebook status from time to time, so that our friends
know what we are doing or what we are thinking. We may not have much time to talk
with our friends that often, but with a Facebook status, you can tell a lot of your friends
about your most updated news. We know what our friends are doing through statuses,
but we may feel that we don’t interact with our friends as much, and eventually aren’t as
close as before due to a lack of communication.
However, I think to some extent we do know more about our friends with Facebook
statuses. It all depends on how you view and use it. This raises a problem related to
privacy. There are critics who fear that Facebook is unfairly pushing its members to place
too much of their private information into public view. Some users put a lot of personal
information on their Facebook profile, like their e-mail and phone number, their work and
education history, their interests like music, movies and books, etc. Nevertheless,
Facebook suggested that if a user puts his personal information on his profile, employers
may use that information to interview or even recruit a user. The user could get a job from
posting the right personal information on his/her profile.
However, how Facebook handles users’ personal information and privacy is a concern for
the public and critics. Users have no idea how Facebook is going to use their data.
Facebook has responded to this matter by keeping key personal information private to
other users. Key personal information includes the users’ biography, birthday, sexual
preference, religious and political views, photo albums, users’ own posts, the ability for
friends to post to users’ walls, the visibility of friends’ posts on users’ walls, and comments
on posts on users’ walls.
Undeniably, there are advantages and benefits for users to post their personal information
on their profile. The key is to have a balance, putting personal information on a profile but
at the same time retaining some personal privacy.
