Sample Problems

1. The document discusses several topics related to kinematics and dynamics of machines including: an epicyclic gear train problem where the number of rotations per minute of an arm must be calculated; a gear mesh problem involving involute gears where various values must be determined; a cam design problem where the cam profile is drawn to provide lift to a rod. 2. It also includes questions about a gear with circular pins engaging a rack, properties of meshing gears given module and pressure angle, an epicyclic bevel gear train, displacement and velocity/acceleration calculations for a cam/follower system. 3. ME 316 S2: Kinematics and Dynamics of Machines

1. An epicyclic gear train is shown in figure. The sun gear 2 on the input shaft is 20
teeth external gear, the planet gear 3 is 40 teeth external gear. The ring gear 5 is a 100
teeth internal gear. The gear 5 is fixed and the gear 2 is rotating at 60 rpm ccw. Find
the number of rotations per minute of arm 4?

Figure 1: Epicyclic gear train

2. Two involute gears of 20° pressure angle are in mesh. The number of teeth on pinion
is 20 and the gear ratio is 2. Given that the module is 5 mm and the speed at pitch
point is 1.2 m/s. Assume addendum to be equal to module,
Find:
a. The angle turned through by one pair of teeth during engagement
b. Determine the contact ratio
c. (challenge) The maximum velocity of sliding. (hint: see the velocity at the
point of contact on pinion and on gear).

3. Draw the profile of a cam that gives a lift of 40 mm to a rod carrying a 20 mm

diameter roller. The axis of the roller passes through the center of the cam. The least
radius of the cam is 50mm. and it rotates at 60rpm. The rod is to be lifted with
sinusoidal (also called simple harmonic motion) motion in a quarter revolution and is
to be dropped linearly in the next half rotation followed by idle (no motion) over the
last quarter of rotation. Determine the maximum velocity and maximum acceleration
during the lifting.

(Sketch profile as a function of rotation angle first and then draw cam profile)
Q4: Consider of a gear consisting of a blank on which 8 circular pins are mounted in a fashion
shown below. The gear engages with a rack with straight teeth moving along a straight line.
Determine if ONE circular pin and straight rack would work as conjugate profiles. Show at least
two positions with corresponding pitch points to justify your answer.

Q5: A gear with module m=5 mm and 40 teeth is meshing with pinion having 20 teeth.
Considering pressure angle to be 20 deg, addendum = m, and dedendum = 1.25 m, determine
ideal center to center distance, base circle diameters on gear and pinion, circular pitch, and outer
diameters of gear and pinion. (Given Pitch circle dia = m*no of teeth)

6. An epicyclic bevel gear train (known as Humpage’s reduction gear) is shown in

Fig. 3. It consists of a fixed wheel C, the driving shaft X and the driven shaft Y.
The compound wheel B-D can revolve on a spindle F which can
turn freely about the axis X and Show that (i) if the ratio of tooth numbers TB / TD
is greater than TC / TE , the wheel E will rotate in the same direction as wheel A,
and (ii) if the ratio TB / TD is less than TC / TE, the direction of E is reversed.

7. Given a circular shape cam with radius ‘a’ with camshaft offset by distance ‘b’.
It drives a flat face follower. Derive expression for the displacement of cam in
terms of parameters a and b. Further find out velocities and acceleration and
comment where they will be maximum.

8. For a profile of cam given in the problem above a = 70 mm, b = 20 mm. Cam
drives a roller follower of diameter 15 mm instead of flat face follower. Cam is
rotating at a speed of 200 rpm. Assume rolling without slipping. Using velocity
and acceleration diagram, determine the velocity and acceleration of follower at
angle 60 deg from the lowest position of the cam.
