In this paper, it seeks to reiterate the learnings and understanding in studying the
speech sounds which is Phonetics, it also concerns on how the speaker make a sound of a
word and how does the listeners perceive the sounds. While Phonology is how the sounds are
being organized into systems (Abercrombie, 1967). Some scholars define phonology as the
study of the function of speech sounds.
Why does phonetics and phonology necessary in learning a language? So, our first
task is to explain how Phonetics and Phonology could be implied and its importance to
pronunciation. Basically, we are studying this to improve our pronunciation especially when
learning a new language or a second language. IPA or International Phonetic Alphabet is
really helpful in pronouncing a word using the symbols and in order for us to fully know the
sound of a word is to imitate the words that we heard from native speakers. The development
of IPA's different versions has been adopted by teachers to be included in their teaching
methods. It's also helpful to keep in mind that we should learn how to perceive sounds and
know how to differentiate a distinct sound of a word. Some authors like Jones (2002),
emphasizes that it is important to form a habit of imitation in pronunciation even after the
Communicative language teaching. For instance, a well-known technique that’s is used by
teachers is to make use of phonemes and minimal pairs. Like many authors, Cook defined the
concept of phoneme and minimal pair, it really proved that it is useful in teaching
pronunciation. As a future educator, I would like to apply this learning and the next one to
my future students. It is really important to learn this beforehand and it enlighten me when it
comes to pronunciation, because when you know how the words are formed and what it
sounds like, it will benefit both of us. The learner’s perspective and the teachers as well.
Speaking of which, there’s what we called pedagogy and andragogy; pedagogy is an
approach to teaching wherein learners are dependent to their teachers, child-like learning and
the teachers were the ones who has the full authority in teaching. Unlike in adragogy,
wherein the learners are independent, they’re the ones who has the full responsibility in
learning, gaining new experiences towards self-actualization. According to Knowles’ theory,
he defined that the learnings that we knew is focused on the way children has operated it. He
also states that, the traditional schooling is how and where education takes place. That is why
Malcolm Knowles, an adult educator and researcher has adopted the term for “andragogy” to
refer to the distinctive motivators adult learners used. On the one hand, children required
more reliance on their instructor. Lastly, he noticed that old ones or adults were self-directed
or more independent and relied heavily on their experiences when they are learning
something.
To sum it all up, it is truly important to learn Phonetics and phonology so that we
might avoid misinterpretation and miscommunication between the teachers and students and
also the people that we usually talk to.
