Why create a LinkedIn Account?


LinkedIn is a form of social media which will allow you to:

-Expand your network


-Create more employment opportunities through joining groups/discussions on various topics
that you are interested in
-Showcase your experience, skills, certifications, achievements
-Directly assess potential relevant and current trends in your field

Why do you need join LinkedIn as a WVA member?


Members on the WVA team are highly encouraged to create a LinkedIn profile in order to,
incorporate professionalism within the club. It allows young business professionals to tap into
the world of endless opportunities this field has to offer just, by the mere click of a button. Also,
this will be used as a method of marketing the club itself through a new platform. As a member
on the team, you are required to include a portion in your “Experience” tab, where you will write
a short paragraph or jot notes about what we do as a club and your particular role on this team.

What does it consist of?


LinkedIn has various tabs which range from Education, Experience, Certifications, Volunteering,
Skills/Endorsements, Languages, Causes you care about, Opportunities you are looking for,
Organizations you support, Awards, etc.

Education - Write about your current position as a student and any past education you have
received
Experience - This can range from a conference you may have attended to serving as an executive
on an extra-curricular activity
Certifications - Mention any certifications you have received in the past (i.e. First Aid,
safeTALK – Suicide Alertness for Everyone, etc.)
Volunteering - Any past experience you have with organizations that you have volunteered for
Skills and Endorsements - List of your skills
Language(s) - What language(s) you speak and how proficient you are in them
Opportunities you are looking for - How would like to donate your time and talent? (In jot notes
write about what you are interested in)
Causes you care about - Select topics/causes that matter to you from the list provided
Organizations you support - What are your favorite organizations or organizations that hold
importance in your life? (i.e. DECA Ontario)
Honors and Awards - What have you achieved so far?
Courses - What courses are you taking? (Relevant to recruiters to see what kind of knowledge
you are acquiring/have acquired)
LinkedIn has many other categories which can one can easily update however, shared above are
specific sections which are most commonly updated and shared on one’s profile.

How should your LinkedIn profile picture look?


o Recent, high-quality headshot
o Facing forward, preferred in business casual clothes
o Hair out of your face
o Smiling
o Appropriate background

What should you do?


o Be honest
o Proofread your profile
o Keep it updated
o Maintain professionalism when writing or commenting on any posts
