Study of Single Phase Fully Controlled Bridge Rectifier With RL Load and Fully Controlled Mid-Point Type Rectifier With RL Load

The document discusses the simulation of two types of fully controlled rectifiers with RL loads: 1) a bridge rectifier and 2) a mid-point rectifier. It presents the circuit diagrams, operating theory, key equations, simulation parameters, waveforms and a performance comparison table between the two rectifiers under continuous and discontinuous modes. The aim is to study and compare key output parameters like voltage, current and power factor between the simulated and calculated results of both rectifier circuits under different operating conditions.

AIM OF THE EXPERIMENT:

Study of single phase fully controlled bridge rectifier with RL load and fully
controlled mid-point type rectifier with RL load.

SIMULATION DIAGRAM:

1. Fully controlled bridge rectifier with RL:

2. Fully controlled mid-point type rectifier with RL load:

THEORY:

1. Fully controlled bridge rectifier:

In controlled bridge rectifier four SCRs are connected in a bridge type structure as
shown in figure. Each two SCRs is provided with common gate pulse for faithful
rectification and for reduction of harmonics, as shown in figure. It can be operated
with both continuous as well as discontinuous mode of operation.

2. Fully controlled mid-point type rectifier:

In controlled mid point type rectifier two SCRs are connected with different gate
pulses. There is also a center tapped transformer is used. It is used to distribute the
potential in such a way that during positive half cycle the upper half circuit will
conduct current and during negative half cycle the lower half circuit will conduct
current. But the load is connected in such a way that current will flow through it
both half cycles. It can also be operated with both continuous as well as
discontinuous mode of operation.
VOAVG : average output voltage

IOAVG : average output current

IORMS : RMS value of output current

VORMS : RMS value of output voltage

IIRMS : RMS value of input current

VIRMS : RMS value of input voltage

α: Firing angle

β: Extinsion angle

a. Continuous mode of operation:

α= tan-1(ωL/R)

VOAVG= (2VMcosα)/π

IOAVG = VOAVG / R

VORMS= VM/√2

IORMS = VORMS / R

Input power factor is given by

p.f. = IS1 cosα/ IS

b. Discontinuous mode of operation:

In case of discontinuous mode of operation extension angle is present and

formula to calculate extension angle is given bellow

CONCLUSION:-

The circuit diagram and waveforms of fully controlled bridge rectifier with RL
load and fully controlled mid-point type rectifier with RL load in both continuous and
discontinuous mode was studied and all parameters like I ORMS , VORMS , IOAVG , VOAVG ,
