High School Students of Southernside Montessori School

2017

Abstract

Sleep is an important element for the human condition. It allows us to perform

critical daily functions at peak optimization. This is an issue mainly concerning
adolescents since it may affect their growth. This research aims to find a solution for the
Senior High School students and the results will provide advantage and awareness for
those students who lack sleep. This study only covers some of the Senior High School
students and the data gathered are only limited. According to the respondents, some
symptoms they experience when sleep deprived are; unable to concentrate, mood
swings, sleepiness and headaches. Some reasons why they sleep late are because of
school works, social life and online games. Students sleep an average 5 hours every
day which is still below the advised 8-10 hours of sleep. There are several effects of
sleep deprivation and it’s not that easy to handle. The study concludes that there are
some effects of sleep deprivation evident to the respondents. Each respondent from
every strand appeared to have same effects as the others. The researchers
recommend the students to discipline themselves and realize that sleep deprivation
starts and ends with them.

Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Most people don’t get enough sleep. We are a society that burns the candle at

both ends, a nation where people stay up all night to study, work, or have fun. However,

going without adequate sleep carries with it both short and long term consequences. If

you’ve ever spent a night tossing and turning, you already know how you’ll feel the next

day — tired, cranky, and out of sorts. But missing out on the recommended 7 to 9 hours

of shut-eye nightly does more than make you feel groggy and grumpy. The long term

effects of sleep deprivation are real. It drains your mental abilities and puts your

physical health at real risk.

We do all know that sleeping is important in our body. It will make your body

function well. But if you have less than 7 hours sleep there’s a consequence of that act.

It gives you sign of sleep deprivation like excessive sleepiness, yawning, irritability, and

day time fatigue. There’s a lot of things might affect having lack of sleep. Like central

nervous system, immune system, respiratory system, nervous system, digestive

system, cardiovascular system, and endocrine system. Those seven systems in our

body will have some side effect by not having enough sleep.

Sleep is an important element for the human condition. By obtaining the correct

amount, it allows us to perform critical daily functions at peak optimization. However,

students often underestimate sleep and its importance, therefore leading and preventing

Page 3
SOUTHERNSIDE MONTESSORI SCHOOL

them from performing at peak efficiency. According to The National Sleep Foundation

(2016), “Sleep is vital to well-being”, as important as the air you breathe, the food you

eat.it can even help you to eat better and manage the stress of being a student’s”. The

research reveals the consequences of students not getting enough sleep and not

getting enough sleep also is known as sleep deprivation.

Sleep deprivation is the condition of not having enough sleep and there are two

types of it; they are chronic which denotes long term disease and acute which denotes

short term or duration. Sleep deprivation also negatively affects your mental abilities

and emotional state. You may feel more impatient or prone to mood swings. It can also

compromise decision-making processes and creativity. There are some psychological

risk include: impulsive behavior, depression, paranoia, and suicidal thoughts. Sleep

deprivation affects the brain and its cognitive function. Chicago Medical Institute

suggested that sleep deprivation may be linked to serious illnesses like heart diseases

and mental disorders like psychosis and bipolar disorder. Their study showed, using an

MRI scan revealed that a sleep deprived brain is incapable of putting an emotional

event or to give a suitable response to the situation. Some animal studies also suggest

that sleep deprivation increases production of stress hormones and reduces new cell

production in adult brains.

These effects may have a huge impact since the brain is a critical organ of our

body and any infection or complication to it may lead to death. This will also affect the

capacity of the students to learn and could also affect their perspective and their way of

Page 4
SOUTHERNSIDE MONTESSORI SCHOOL
Senior High School Department

decision making. Performing tasks or the activity of a student inside the classroom is

mostly correlated with the number of hours of sleep that they received each night. Sleep

deprivation can also lessen the attention given and the working memory, that is why

those who are sleep deprived people usually have a hard time of doing a simple task

and tend to forget what they’re about to do most of the time.

Growth hormones are usually released during your sleep. Now if you lack a few

hours of sleep then the production of this hormone will also be suppressed causing

delay in growth. If someone is usually not getting the right amount of time to sleep, it

may cause an impact to their height and weight.

Sleep is very crucial especially to adolescents. This is the period where they

transition from a child to an adult. Different body changes are occurring during this time

that is why sleep deprivation may be a cause for them not to grow in a way they really

should be.

An experiment was done on a group of rats. They compared a wound of a

severely sleep deprived rat to a rat who slept normally. It showed that the rat’s wound

with enough sleep healed faster than the other rat. Sleep is generally conducive to

healing. Indirect evidence suggests that sleep may be important to the healing process

for the protein synthesis and cell division usually happens during sleep. This may cause

a worse scenario to a person who has a wound and also lacks sleep. Sleep deprivation

may slow down the process of healing. It may even cause more complication to the said

wound. Having lack of sleep also affects the weight of a person—sleep loss disturbs

Page 5
SOUTHERNSIDE MONTESSORI SCHOOL
Senior High School Department

also the endocrine regulation of the body and the hormones that regulate the glucose

metabolism and appetite. Several large studies using nationally representative samples

suggest that one of the causes of high obesity rates in the United States is the decrease

of amount of sleep that appears to young and middle-aged adults.

With sleep deprivation, it has become prominent in the road according to the

statistics of American Academy of Sleep Medicine that one out of five serious motor

vehicles accident happens to 80,000 drivers falling asleep behind the wheel and about

250,000 accidents per year that are related to sleep itself. Sleep deprivation can have

the effects of being drunk—people who are awake for 17-19 hours has an equivalent of

0.05 of alcohol content and 21 hours above has an equivalent of 0.08 of alcohol content

which is the limit for drunk driving.

Now, will you have the same effects of being sleep deprived senior high school

students to the effects mentioned above? Are there any differences and similarities

between it? There are still a lot of questions that keep on popping in our minds but let us

be sure that this study will answer them all.

Background of the Study

Now days, sleep has been a problem in the society of the whole world. Sleep

deprivation has something to do with other people’s appearance, behavior and health.

Lack of sleep has many bad effects in the body and in the mental abilities because it

drains the mental abilities, puts the physical health at real risk and it causes mood

Page 6

changes, risk of heart disease, weakened immunity and many more. Sleep deprivation

is most commonly can be seen in students and it can be threatening to them. It can

become their habit and can bring it until they are working already. But there is a way to

prevent this kind of situation, The National Institutes of Health suggests that school-age

children need at least 10 hours of sleep daily, teens need 9-10 hours, and adults need

7-8 hours. According to data from the National Health Interview Survey, nearly 30% of

adults reported an average of 6 hours of sleep per day in 2005-2007.In 2009, only 31%

of high school students reported getting at least 8 hours of sleep on an average school

night.

According to India Times, One in every five people across the world is sleep

deprived owning to reasons ranging from lifestyle, odd working hours and personal

obligations and there are 20 percent people sleep deprived globally. Based on Dr.

Charles Samuels of the Canadian Sleep Society, some highly successful people boast

of only needing a few hours’ sleep every night, or not having time in their busy lives to

sleep properly. But the reality is you need adequate sleep to function properly, to be

able to drive safely and just and be healthy. There is nothing noble about not getting

enough sleep." Also, a majority of Canadians are among the sleep-deprived, the report

said, It said 60 per cent of Canadian adults feel tired most of the time  and get, on

average, 6.9 hours of sleep a night, although experts recommend eight hours. Canadian

research indicates 30 per cent of adults get fewer than six hours a night. According to

Norman Hart, president of the Australian Primary Principals Association said that late

Page 7
SOUTHERNSIDE MONTESSORI SCHOOL
Senior High School Department

nights caused Aussie students to lack of sleep and even disruptive school behavior. In

the US, the American Academy of Pediatrics blames the very early start times of middle

and high schools to sleep deprivation that affects the kids’ health, safety and academic

success. For school year 2011-12, less than 20 percent of middle and high schools

started at the recommended time of 8:30 am, based on data published by the Centers

for Disease Control and Prevention after a review of almost 40,000 schools.Starting

school at 8:30 am or later provides adolescents to get the recommended 8.5 to 9.5

hours of sleep daily. Lack of sleep is linked with several health risks such as being

overweight, alcoholism, smoking and drug use. The report said that average start time

of US schools was 8:03 am, while 75 to 100 percent of schools in 42 states begin

before 8:30 am. As a result of the survey, in 2014, the American Academy of Pediatrics

urged middle and high school administrators to change their opening times to not earlier

than 8:30 am. But getting enough sleep is not an assurance of topping the performance

tests since Azerbaijan youth, who were the least sleepy, were lagging in test results

compared to other nations. Meanwhile, Finnish students who were sleep-deprived

performed better than students from Azerbaijan.

One major phenomenon that has been gradually eroding the health of the

Philippines is lack of sleep. Studies have shown that, in the last few decades, children

(and therefore, adults) have been sleeping less and less. Adults whose parents

enforced strict bedtime rules have been found to function more efficiently at work and

sleep more than hour more than those who grew up with no rules on when to sleep. On

Page 8
SOUTHERNSIDE MONTESSORI SCHOOL

the other hand, according to Bill Velasco there has been gradually eroding the health of

the Philippines is lack of sleep. From the effects of unbearable traffic to the explosion of

the business process outsourcing industry to the geometric rise of Internet usage

nationwide, millions of Filipinos are choosing to sleep less and less, with dangerous

effects. We seem to think that staying awake to finish work is the lesser evil. It isn’t. It is

a danger we have to address, and soon.

Meanwhile in the Southernside Montessori School, as a student, it is inevitable to

have a short amount of sleep especially now that the senior high school students are

close to the next stage in their lives; college life. They are loaded of school works that

are needed in order for them to graduate and in order for them to finish before the due

date; they have to stay awake at night. The life of a student is largely affected by the all-

nighters they have put in just to satisfy their academic purposes despite its negative

effect to the health and that’s what makes this study ‘worthy’ of paying an attention at.

This figure shows the concept of the survey questionnaire which it stated the

possible reasons on why students are staying late at night, making them deprived from

sleep. It resulted into a sleep deprivation and the effects appeared which the

researchers took from the survey questionnaire that was given to the respondents. The

reasons that we have stated here are the major reasons why students, composed of

students from senior high, are getting deprived from sleep, which in return have an

effect on the students. As such long term sleep deprivation can show results of changes

in health, slow healing of wounds, lack of performance and finally poor performance

when it comes to their school works.

 Theoretical Framework

The study was anchored to Sleep deprivation affects multiple distinct cognitive

processes by Roger Ratcliff and Hans P.A. Van Dongen, where sleep deprivation

affects people ranging from decline in cognitive functions to peripheral functions, which

goes for the performance of people especially those that are more exposed to sleep

deprivation, lose the ability to perform certain tasks normally, or have difficulties doing

so.

Another theory that is related to our study is Information Consolidation Theory of

Sleep, where it states that in order for a person to retain knowledge gained. In addition

sleep is also needed so that the brain can prepare for the incoming day where we are

faced with different tasks and lessons to learn, whether it be from school, or from the

job. Adequate sleep is also the foundation for long-term memory for the lessons or the

things we have learned throughout the day.

 Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this phenomenological study is to know the effects and

experiences of the senior high school students of Southernside Montessori

School with having sleep deprivation.

Specifically, this seeks to answer the following questions:

1.) What are the common symptoms that you feel when you are sleep

deprived?

2.) What are your reasons for you to sleep late at night? (ex: Assignments,

Projects, Social Life, Exams, etc.)

3.) How many hours of sleep do you get every night and how do you

handle the effects of sleep deprivation?

 Significance of the Study

Other than knowing the effects of lack of sleep to the senior high school

students of Southernside Montessori School that may either be positive or

negative, it is important to find a solution onto this kind of matter especially now

that sleep still has maintained one of the last remaining mysteries in Biology.

Once that the researchers have found a solution or the results of this

phenomena, it will serve as a great advantage and awareness to the students

who only sleep for a couple of hours and to those who always sleep late just to

finish what they’re doing, whether it may be important or not. Approximately 20%

of the population has serious sleep problems without having appropriate

solutions to offer including insomnia and sleep apnea that usually can be seen to

Page 13
SOUTHERNSIDE MONTESSORI SCHOOL
Senior High School Department

both men and women that affects the 10% of the population. And the other

reason that we have on to why we should study about the effects of sleep

deprivation mainly because sleep is involved in everything that we do.

The research is effectively important and significant to specifically to the

following:

 Community. This research will help them keep aware of the effects of

frequently sleeping late at night or sleep deprivation of a student inside

and outside the school premises. This also could remind them to advise

the students to take notice on the length of sleep that they have and for

them to tell not to sleep late at night

 Parents. As a member of the family, parents also will get something from

this research; it will make them aware of the advantages and

disadvantages of having lack of sleep. They will serve as guidance to their

children so that they are able to monitor them their sleeping hours. Some

parents even put a discipline to their children—they set a time onto which

their children will go to bed even if they’re not that sleepy enough and if

they have some stuffs to do. Well, it might look like time is wasted

because of sleep. However, at least this will help their children to be

active, awake and critical in thinking even if it’s the first thing in the

morning.

 Teachers and Guidance Counselors. This is for the teachers and

guidance counselors for them to fully understand the situation the student

Page 14
SOUTHERNSIDE MONTESSORI SCHOOL
Senior High School Department

currently on facing especially that they were the ones who will be their

second parents. They will also guide their students for they will directly or

indirectly impact the students’ disciplinary or behavioral acts that are

observed inside the classroom.

 Students. As a student, it can’t be prevented to sleep late at night

probably because of the tower of papers and school works that needs to

be done before the due date. If not homework or projects, it can be

studying for the exams or quizzes that need more attention especially that

everything that we do in our school affects our grades. The students will

benefit it the most since that this research was made specifically for them

to get something from it—may it be a new knowledge or some tips and

advices like them minimizing the frequency of them sleeping late at night.

This study will remind them to get to know their main priorities in life so

that they will know how to control and manage their time. If playing

computer games late at night with a 7 am classes in the next morning,

then that child should stop what he is doing since that it isn’t that important

enough. Besides, there is a lot of time for that but you can never lessen

the amount of your sleep if you want yourself to be healthy and lively in

the morning.

 Researchers. This study will serve as future reference to the researchers

in other disciplines (ex; psychiatrist, etc) who will conduct the same study

about coffee causing and affecting the students’ behaviors.

Page 15
SOUTHERNSIDE MONTESSORI SCHOOL
Senior High School Department

 Scope and Delimitations of the Study

This study was only applicable to high school students (around) in Southernside

Montessori School; meaning to say, this research does not apply to the other places

which aren’t under the specific place mentioned. Data and information gathered were

only limited considering that this is not actually the general result of the study. It

requires more respondents for the information gathered be as many as that. The

purpose of citing out and explaining the effects of sleep deprivation to people is to let

you to have an idea about the possible effects that a student may have for being sleep

deprived. The effects mentioned about only serves as a generalized result to the whole

world, and the study we are about to conduct tackles only the effects of sleep

deprivation to the senior high school students of Southernside Montessori School.

Since that this is a qualitative research, there are lots of limitations available but

the researchers must be aware what are these and how will they be able to handle

these limitations that can help their study more.

 Definition of Terms

In order to arrive at a common understanding, the following terms used in the study are

hereby defined operationally and conceptually:

Adolescent. A young person who is developing into an adult : a young person who is

going through adolescence

Apnea. Transient cessation of respiration; especially : sleep apnea

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Sleep is essential for health and well-being. Based on American

Psychological website, millions of people don’t get enough, resulting in such problems

as daytime sleepiness, poor decision-making, interference with learning and accidents.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy, which helps people identify and change their thoughts

and behaviors, can help. In fact, according to one study, cognitive-behavioral therapy

does a better job of reducing insomnia than sleeping pills.

Sleep Deprivation has a lot of different effects in our body may it be physical

or psychological. Its physical effects include weight fluctuation, being prone to diseases,

minor headaches. Sleep deprivation may also cause children to not reach their full

growth potential. As for the psychological effects of the sleep deprivation, it may cause

hallucinations or paranoia. These things are usually thoughts out of the reality. It may

also lead to disorientation, people who suffer from this lose track of time and is

confused about a lot of things. Since the research is mainly focused on its effect to the

students, there are some symptoms of sleep deprivation that may be evident in them.

Memory and thinking problems are one of the most common symptoms of sleep

deprivation to students. They may have difficulty in concentrating and paying attention.

These may result in poor-planning, increased risk taking and disorganization. These

Page 20
SOUTHERNSIDE MONTESSORI SCHOOL
Senior High School Department

symptoms may affect the academic performance of a student in school. A person with

this condition is most likely to experience health consequences and may also lead to

drastic hormone changes and even thyroid function.

Senior High School (SHS) covers the last two years of the K to 12 program and

includes Grades 11 and 12. Based on Republic of The Philippines Department of

Education, In SHS, students will go through a core curriculum and subjects under a

track of their choice. HS Students may pick a track based on how he or she will want to

proceed after high school graduation. You can learn more about the tracks and strands

(as well as their curriculum) in the K to 12 Curriculum Guides.

Academic track has four strands: Accountancy, Business and Management

(ABM); Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics; Humanities and Social

Sciences (HUMSS);  and General Academic (GAS). The most flexible strand, according

to Department of Education  (DepEd) Assistant Secretary Elvin T. Uy, is the GAS

because it will allow students to try one or two subjects in the STEM, one or two in tech-

voc, and other electives for which the SHS has the facilities and the teachers.

Practical Research is an applied method of problem solving in academia,

characterized by an unbiased, honest attitude, which can be demonstrated in a number

of different ways. Based on Jubilee Christian Academy, The activity aimed to develop

students’ critical thinking, technical writing skills, organizational skills, understanding of

the qualitative research process, and their confidence in expressing effectively their

ideas and arguments.

Sleep deprivation is the condition of not having enough sleep; it can be

either chronic or acute. "You're building up a sleep debt. Every single night you're

adding to that debt, and unless you pay down that debt on a regular basis, you will see

an effect on your ability to think and to perform," said Christopher Drake, PhD, a sleep

researcher at the Henry Ford Sleep Disorders Center and an associate professor of

psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences at the Wayne State University School of

Medicine in Detroit.

RESEARCH DEISGN/RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

 Data Gathering Procedure

The study that we conducted helped us identify what is the effect of sleep

deprivation and who is affected by sleep deprivation on Senior High school students of

Southernside Montessori School. We conducted our research by gathering all the data

that we need by giving each strands of the Grade 11 and Grade 12 students a survey

forms. We’ve chosen two people each strand to answer the questions we provided on

our questionnaire.

 The Respondents

The respondents of this study are the senior high school students of

Southernside Montessori School at the City of Muntinlupa in Metro Manila, Philippines

who were chosen to be the main target for the study of the effects of sleep deprivation.

However, since it is a qualitative study, the number of participants is just limited and

only requires a small sample in order to gather data and information from them.

 The Instruments

The researchers will be using a questionnaire, so that the researchers may let

the participants answer a list of questions through a simple interview. Next thing that

Page 23
SOUTHERNSIDE MONTESSORI SCHOOL
Senior High School Department

they will use is the books and other scholarly articles that may be used to discover other

concepts related to the research. The researchers will also be using Internet since that

some data that a researcher needs may not be in the school’s library books. . It is one

of the primary sources of information to supply sufficient data needed for the research.

That’s why they use this in order to search some background information about the

chosen title

 Research Design

Qualitative Research is a systematic subjective approach used to describe life

experiences and give them meaning. The goal of this is to gain insight; explore the

depth, richness, and complexity inherent in the phenomenon. The researchers decided

to use Phenomenology as a type of Qualitative Research as they perform their study.

Phenomenological studies examine human experiences through the descriptions

provided by the people involved. These experiences are called lived experiences. The

goal of phenomenological studies is to describe the meaning that experiences hold for

each subject. This type of research is used to study areas in which there is little

knowledge (Donalek, 2004).

In phenomenological research, respondents are asked to describe their

experiences as they perceive them. Since that a qualitative research is about having

open-ended questions, researchers are able to ask a lot of sub-questions that may

contribute to the results of the study. They may write about their experiences, but

information is generally obtained through interviews.

Page 24
SOUTHERNSIDE MONTESSORI SCHOOL
Senior High School Department

 Sampling Design

The researchers used the purposive method in which they took two students from

each section/strand, only to those who are sleep deprived in order to gather data that

will be used in the conducted research.

 Ethnical Consideration

In making a qualitative research, it is important that the researchers follow some

principles to ensure that the research they are conducting. This will help them know the

difference between the acceptable and unacceptable behaviors. Having a reliable and

valid research merely relies on these principles:

 Respect for Persons – Always respect the freedom of your participants in

making decisions as well as their dignity.

 Beneficence – The researchers should ensure that the research that they

will conduct will always give benefits to other people.

 Justice – Participants should come from a group whom the research may

benefit and they should all be treated the same way.

 Respect for communities – Respect their values and cultures as a

community. Protect them from harm and keep the community safe.

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

The data gathered from the respondents are presented according to the

questions stated in the Statement of the Problem:

1.) What are the common symptoms that you feel when you are sleep deprived?

 I easily forget something and I lose weight even if I get to eat a lot and barely

even exercise every morning

 I tend to be sleepy all the time, especially when our classes starts at 7 in the

morning.

 I’m having a hard time to sleep early. And whenever I attempt to do it, I’m having

a hard time to wake up early because my body feels more tired than the usual.

 I have an Acute Insomnia which only happens when I can't calm my nerves and

when that happens I don't get any sleep

 Unable to concentrate in classes, having headaches and being lazy all the time

whenever I am sleep deprived.

 My mood changes easily whenever I get a little amount of sleep.

Page 26
SOUTHERNSIDE MONTESSORI SCHOOL
Senior High School Department

2.) What are your reasons for you to sleep late at night? (ex: Assignments,

Projects, Social Life, Exams, etc.)

 Projects, Assigments, Studying, watching Youtube Vlogs, watching K-Drama and

talking to my friends until midnight.

 I sleep late because of Acads, social life and my gaming life also.

 There are really a lot of paper works to finish within the day and pass it the next

day. We only have a short time to finish everything which causes the students to

sleep late. And if we have morning classes, then we really need to wake up early.

This situation can lead to sleep deprivation.

 Acads and because of my Acute Insomnia that I was unable to sleep early.

 I sleep late because of assignments, projects—mostly about academics.

 The reason why I sleep late because of my studies and my social life.

3.) How many hours of sleep do you get every night and how do you handle the

effects of sleep deprivation?

 A minimum of 5 hours of sleep will do for me. Sometimes I can’t handle it but I

always do is that I’ll finish my task when I got home from school then I will sleep

early so that I can boost my energy for the next day

 Depends on the time of our classes, but around a maximum of 6 hours only. I take naps

when there are free times at school at least a 5 mins pawer nap would do

Page 27

Senior High School Department

 3 and a half hour only. I handle it by praying to God, always. Through that, I feel

motivated to handle any situation.

 Since that I have an acute insomnia, I am already used to its effects and with me

sleeping late at night. But I drink coffee, a lot of coffee, too.

 I sleep for only 5 hours every night and I handle the effects by having a nap

whenever there’s a vacant time in class.

 I struggle, because I sleep when I am at school. And miss out on most of the discussions

so I handle it by drinking a lot of coffee.

FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Summary of Findings

The findings of the study as follows:

 Effects of Sleep Deprivation to the Senior High Students

There are a lot of effects that could appear in a person whenever

they experience sleep deprivation such as the weakening of immune

system, having sleep diseases and many more. But what the respondents

usually feel are their inability to concentrate well in classes, feeling sleepy

and dizzy most of the time when in class and experiencing gain loss. They

also experience mood swings changing easily and having trouble of

sleeping when they feel their body exhausted because of the effects of

sleep deprivation. Even if the researchers tried to interview the students

according to their strand, same effects of sleep deprivation still could be

seen.

 Reasons why the Senior High School students are sleep deprived

The respondents of this study supposedly should be college

students right now but since that the education curriculum has changed

Page 29
SOUTHERNSIDE MONTESSORI SCHOOL
Senior High School Department

and senior high has been a preparation for the upcoming college students,

they are facing a lot of struggles the same as what the college students

are experiencing. They have to do well with their studies for them to

receive high grades and good moral reports from the teachers and

guidance counselors that would be very useful when they’re going to apply

on different universities. Other than studies, the respondents also stay

awake to do the things that entertain them or act as a leisure time for them

by playing computer games, watching TV shows and socializing with their

friends and family that they aren’t even aware of the time that they spent

doing this.

 Own ways to handle Sleep Deprivation

Handling sleep deprivation isn’t as easy as you think considering

that sleep is something that is essential in our lives. Some of the

respondents aren’t aware that they’re already experiencing sleep

deprivation since that they are forced sometimes to stay awake just for

them to finish what they’re doing. It is hard to control yourself to stay

awake and also to chase the time you were supposedly sleeping so the

respondents tried to stay awake by drinking a lot of coffee, which is known

for its use of making a person awake, and by taking a nap whenever they

find a vacant time to rest. But sometimes when they still aren’t able to fall

Page 30
SOUTHERNSIDE MONTESSORI SCHOOL
Senior High School Department

asleep, when sleep diseases trigger them like insomnia and sleep

paralysis and when they aren’t able to handle their lives with having a little

amount of sleep, all they do is to pray to God most of the time.

Conclusions

Based on the findings summarized in this study, the researchers therefore

concluded that:

1.) The effects of sleep deprivation such as being unable to concentrate,

having mood swings, losing weight and the feeling of tiredness

appeared to the senior high school students of Southernside

Montessori School.

2.) Even if the researchers tried to categorize the respondents according

to their strand, same effects still appeared just like what the

respondents answered in the questionnaire.

3.) Because of so many addictive movie series and video games that

students are so engrossed, they overlook the passing of time and find

themselves dozing off to sleep during the very late hours of the night

towards the wee hours of the day.

4.) Despite of having many school works, students sacrifices their time at

night just to finish the tasks that were given to them.

Page 31
SOUTHERNSIDE MONTESSORI SCHOOL
Senior High School Department

5.) Most of the students are coffee drinkers because they need to do

school works because some of them are used in cramming and having

an early class on the next day.

Recommendation

By the conclusions obtained in this study, the researcher hereby

recommends the following:

1.) Try to discipline yourself from sleeping late at night to prevent from

experiencing the negative effects of sleep deprivation.

2.) Prioritize and manage your time well so that you wouldn’t have to cram

and sleep late at night just to finish it.

3.) Try to sleep a lot when you have the chance so that you would gain

back the energy you spent during the day and for you to have a strong

immune system.

4.) If you continuously experience the sleep diseases like insomnia and

sleep paralysis, go to a doctor for a regular check-up.

5.) Adjust the morning classes if possible, same with the due date of

school works when finishing them on time seems so impossible for a

student.

6.) Understand that sleep deprivation starts and will end to you.
