The document discusses photosynthesis and respiration in plants. It defines photosynthesis as the process where plants use light energy, carbon dioxide, and water to produce food (glucose) and oxygen. The key parts of the plant involved are the leaves, chloroplasts, and stomata. Photosynthesis occurs in two stages - the light-dependent reaction where light energy is converted to chemical energy, and the Calvin cycle where carbon dioxide is converted to glucose. The document also contains learning activities for students to label the parts of leaves and chloroplasts, and explain the stages of photosynthesis.

 Time Allotment: Week 6

Photosynthesis
In plants, photosynthesis primarily takes place in the leaves and little or none in
stems depending on the presence of chlorophyll. The typical parts of the leaves include
the upper and lower epidermis, mesophyll spongy layer, vascular bundles, and stomates.
The upper and lower epidermis protects the leaves and has nothing to do with
photosynthetic processes. Mesophyll has the most number of chloroplasts that contain
chlorophyll. They are important in trapping light energy from the sun. Vascular bundles
- phloem and xylem serve as transporting vessels of manufactured food and water.
Carbon dioxide and oxygen were collected in the spongy layer and enters and exits the
leaf through the stomata.

Photosynthesis is a food making process done by plants and autotrophic organisms such
as algae, phytoplankton and some bacteria. As shown in the figure above, the process requires
light energy, carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H20) to make food (sugar).
The different parts of the plants and its functions are:

1. The roots, wherein water is absorbed and delivered to the leaves.

2. Next to it is the stem, this part is the one that will transport the nutrients and water
to the leaves.
3. Not only water is delivered to the leaves but also the carbon dioxide that enters
through the stomata.

Figure 3. Internal Structure of a Leaf.
Primarily, photosynthesis takes place in the leaves due to the presence of chloroplast which
contains chlorophyll. The typical parts of the leaves are the upper and lower epidermis, mesophyll
spongy layer, vascular bundles and the stomata.

Parts Functions

Upper and Lower Epidermis protects the leaves

Mesophyll traps light energy from sun

Vascular bundles transports manufactured food

and water

Stomata gas exchange

What are chloroplasts? These are cell organelles which are only found in autotrophic
eukaryotes, such as plants.

Figure 4. Internal structure of chloroplast
Chloroplast is a cell organelle having a double membrane composed of inner and outer
membrane. It is where stacks of thylakoids (a disc-shaped structures) called grana are found
which is surrounded by the liquid-filled space called stroma, which also plays a role in the process
of photosynthesis.

Figure 5. Two phases of photosynthesis

There are two stages of photosynthesis: (a) Light-dependent Reaction and (b) Calvin
Cycle (dark reaction). Light-dependent reaction happens in the presence of light. It
occurs in the thylakoid membrane and converts light energy to chemical energy. Water-
one of the raw materials of photosynthesis-is utilized during this stage and facilitates the
formation of free electrons and oxygen. The energy harvested during this stage is stored
in the form of ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) and NADPH( Nicotinamide Adenine
Dinucleotide Phosphate Hydrogen). These products will be needed in the next stage to
complete photosynthetic process.

Calvin Cycle (dark reaction) is a light-independent phase that takes place in the
stroma and converts Carbon dioxide (CO2) into sugar. This stage does not directly need
light but needs the products of light reaction. This is why it occurs immediately after the
light-dependent phase.
The chemical reaction for photosynthesis is:

Carbon Dioxide + Water Glucose + Oxygen

(CO2) (H2O) (C6H12O6) (O2)
