Interstellar Review

Christopher Nolan's film "Interstellar" depicts a dystopian future where Earth has become nearly uninhabitable and a group of astronauts tries to find a new planet to sustain humanity. The film features stunning visuals and an original plot that breaks from typical sci-fi conventions. Matthew McConaughey gives a convincing lead performance as Cooper, a father who goes on the mission to save his daughter Murph and ensure humanity's future. While the scientific concepts are portrayed accurately, some viewers may find it difficult to follow. Overall the film is a visually impressive work of both art and science that sets a high bar for science fiction films.

Interstellar Review: Out of this world or out of the movie checklist?

Ideally, the future world that humans potentially have in mind involves flying cars, technologically-
advanced society and dominating robots. But in Christopher Nolan’s movie “Interstellar”, a hugely
different portrayal of the future world was presented in the film leaving everyone in awe. The film sets
foot in an unknown time in the future wherein the Earth drastically transforms into a nearly
uninhabitable planet. As humanity was placed in the brink of extinction, a group of astronauts tries to
save the population and seeks for a new planet that could serve as a new home to mankind. Certainly,
Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” is remarkably an out of this world film worth watching as it sets the
bar higher in the science fiction category.

In all fairness, the plot catches the attention of viewers as it has an original storyline that breaks the
accustomed execution of sci-fi movies. Adding up to the superb plot is the sensational line up of actors
and actresses who gave life to the movie. Matthew McConaughey, who played the role of Cooper, is
definitely a natural as he gave a commendably convincing act which makes him perfect for the role of
Cooper who is a loving father. On the other hand, Anne Hathaway played the role of Brand who is a
NASA scientist and she definitely showed a splendid act that is different from the usual roles that she
has played. Mackenzie Foy played the role of young Murph, the daughter of Cooper but to be honest,
Mackenzie’s resemblance with Matthew is questionable because it is hard to identify that they were
blood-related at first glance.

Aside from the commendable plot and sensational actors, hands down the best part of the movie was
the execution of scenes as they appear extremely realistic. In the beginning of the movie, the viewers
are given a glimpse of how difficult it was to live in a world close to being uninhabitable. Often shown in
the story are dust storms that occur unexpectedly which makes the people shut all doors and windows
to prevent dusts from coming inside the home. Aside from dust storms, there is also a scarcity in food
crops leaving corns as the last viable crops. These scenes were portrayed well, making it easy for the
viewers to grasp the difficult situation faced by the protagonist.

Furthermore, the Interstellars’ use of CGI is certainly superb as it gives life to the movie. The blackholes,
tidal waves, planets and spaceships are definitely believable which makes the viewers feel like the movie
was indeed shot in outer space. Although the use of CGI is expertly generated, the lighting all
throughout the movie was dim which can affect the viewer’s attention as it may bore them knowing that
this nearly a 3-hour movie. It would have been better if the lighting of the film was brighter on
appropriate scenes preferably in the ending.

Consequently, the portrayal of wormholes, math equations and scientific descriptions are amazingly
accurate and realistic which is highly commendable as it only means that this movie is a product of art
and science. But unfortunately, this strength is also the film’s weakness because not every viewer is
knowledgeable when it comes to scientific terms. The viewers might be lost in the middle of watching
the movie as they are unable to understand and digest the sequence of events. Indeed, this movie is
definitely not everyone’s cup of tea but a great film that provides new information to the viewers.

Aside from scientific knowledge that can be acquired from Interstellar, the lines thrown by the
characters and applied lessons also perpetuate in the viewers’ hearts. No doubt, any viewer would be
admire Cooper’s love and dedication to both his family and passion. This movie shows that you can use
passion to help loved ones for the betterment. Similar to how Cooper decided to save the planet not just
to help mankind, but to ensure his children’s good future.

Although it is a sci-fi movie, it still offered beautiful and quotable lines that will surely be instilled in the
heart and mind. As stated by Brand, “Love is the one thing we’re capable of perceiving that transcends
dimensions of time and space.” This heartfelt line certainly binds the movie as a whole as it shows the
vulnerable side of these amazing characters torn between passion for their profession and longingness
for the loved ones they left behind. Just the mere thought of love indeed is a powerful tool that uplifts a
person even if they are held back by difficult problems and situations.

Moreover, the strong bond between Cooper and Murph is undeniable as they just proved that being
apart for decades does not make their relationship weaker. The thousand miles and the huge time
difference that separates the father from his daughter could not compare to the love they have for each
other. In the scene wherein Murph became older, she sent her first video greeting for Cooper who is still
in the middle of accomplishing his mission. This moment will definitely touch the hearts of the viewers
as Cooper’s eyes were filled with sincere longingness for his daughter.

Altogether, Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” is remarkably an out of this world film worth watching as
it sets the bar higher in the science fiction category. The convincingly original plot, expert use of CGI,
group of sensational actors, supported by factual application of science definitely makes this film a
thumbs-up. This film would be greatly appreciated by sci-fi movie lovers as it would either meet or
surpass their standards. But for viewers who are just looking for a film to watch, this movie is still highly
recommended and it might engage them to watch more movies with the same genre. Ultimately, this
movie is definitely a great addition to everyone’s movie checklist.
