Tutorial 3 Protection For Safety

The document discusses considerations for protection from electric shock and safety codes. It addresses direct and indirect electric shock, requirements for residual current devices, factors for protection against thermal effects and overvoltages, and solutions for high standing leakage current. Questions cover code of practice details, earth fault loop impedance, magnetic tripping curves, and calculating maximum fault power for circuit breakers.

Tutorial 3 Protection for safety

1. What are the considerations in the code of practice on protection for safety?

2. Explain the difference between electric shock from direct and indirect contact.

3. Elaborate on the COP 04 of MS IEC 60038 on Protection against electric shock by direct

contact.

4. Elaborate on the COP 04 of MS IEC 60038 on Protection against electric shock by

indirect contact.

5. What are the mandatory requirements for an RCD to operate properly?

6. If the IΔp of a RCD is 10mA what should be the Earth (TT Earthing) fault loop impedance

for the RCD to disconnect?

7. Elaborate on the factors associated with protection against thermal effects.

8. What are the factors that warrant a need for protection against overvoltages?

9. Propose solutions on how to overcome the problem of high standing leakage current in

electrical installations.

10. State the application for the each of the magnetic tripping curves depicted in figure
below:

11. Refer to the figure above, what range of value of xIn is commonly used for protection
against electronic circuit?
12. A 3-phase, 20 MVA, 10 kV alternator has internal reactance of 5% and negligible

resistance. Find the external reactance per phase to be connected in series with the

alternator so that steady current on short-circuit does not exceed 8 times the full load

current.

13. The plant capacity of a 3-phase generating station consists of two 10,000 kVA generators

of reactance 12% each and one 5000 kVA generator of reactance 18%. The generators

are connected to the station bus-bars from which load is taken through three 5000 kVA

step-up transformers each having a reactance of 5%. Determine the maximum fault MVA

which the circuit breakers on

(i) low voltage side and

(ii) high voltage side may have to deal with.
