1. Explain the working principle of step-down chopper and derive expression for: i) Average
output voltage ii) Output power iii) Effective input resistance in terms of chopper duty cycle.
2. Draw the circuit of a step up chopper and explain its operation with relevant waveforms.
Derive the expression for output voltage and show that the output voltage is greater than the
input voltage.
3. Explain the operation of a step-down chopper with resistive load.
4. Explain the operation of a step-up chopper.
5. Write short note on performance parameters of choppers.
6. A step down chopper is used for supplying power to load consisting of resistance of 5Ώ and
inductance of 7.5mH. The chopper is operated at a constant frequency 1KHz and the duty
cycle is adjusted to get maximum ripple current in the load. Calculate i) peak currents I 1 and
I2 ii) the ripple current iii) average load current iv) rms load current v) average source current.
7. A step down chopper is used for supplying power to 10Ώ load. The input voltage is 220V.
The voltage drop across the chopper is 2V. The operating frequency of the chopper is 1KHz
with a duty cycle of 0.5. Calculate i) rms and average output voltage ii) efficiency of the
converter iii) input resistance iv) rms value of fundamental component of output voltage.
8. Explain the operation of a step-up chopper with resistive load.
9. With the help of circuit diagram, explain four quadrant type E chopper.
10. Classify the choppers and explain the different types and chopper circuits. (or) Explain the
classification of choppers.
11. Explain the switching mode regulator.
12. In detail explain buck regulator. (or) With the help of circuit diagram and waveforms, explain
the working of a Buck regulator. Derive the expression for peak-to-peak ripple current of the
inductor.
13. Obtain the expression for the output voltage for a step-up chopper. A dc chopper has an input
voltage of 200V and a load of 8Ώ. The firing angle of thyristor is 60º in each positive half
cycle. Find a) Average output voltage. b) RMS output voltage. c) Power output. d) Power
factor. e) Average input current over one cycle.
14. The buck regulator has an input voltage of VS = 12V. The required average output voltage is
Va = 5V at R = 500Ώ and peak-to-peak output ripple voltage is 20mV. The switching
frequency is 25KHz. The peak-to-peak ripple current of inductor is limited to 0.8A,
determine: i) the duty cycle K ii) the filter inductor L iii) the filter capacitor C iv) the critical
values of L and C.
15. With the help of circuit diagram and waveforms, explain the working of a Boost regulator.
16. With the help of circuit diagram and waveforms, explain the working of a Buck-Boost
regulator.
17. The dc converter has a resistive load of R=10Ώ and the input voltage is V S=220V. when the
converter switch remains on, its voltage drop is Vch=2V and the chopping frequency is 1KHz.
If the duty cycle is 50%, determine a) the average output voltage b) the rms output voltage c)
the converter efficiency d) the effective input resistance of the converter.
18. A boost regulator has an input voltage of VS=5V. The average output voltage Va = 15V and
the average load current is 05A. The switching frequency is 25KHz. If L=150H and
C=220µf, determine a) duty cycle b) ripple current of the inductor c) peak current of the
inductor d) ripple voltage of filter capacitor e) critical values of L and C.
19. A buck boost regulator has an input voltage of VS=12V. The duty cycle K=0.25 and the
switching frequency is 25KHz. The inductance L=150H and filter capacitance C=220µf. the
average load current is 1.25A, determine a) average output voltage b) peak-to-peak output
ripple voltage c) peak-to-peak ripple current of the inductor d) the peak current of the
transistor e) critical values of L and C.

Draw the load current waveforms for R, RL and RLC loads.
