Complex Engineering Problem

This complex engineering problem involves verifying the validity of system data from a chemical process separating acetone and methanol. A process engineer found differences between the theoretical model predictions and actual system data. Students are asked to use the Margules, Van Laar, and Wilson equations to fit vapor-liquid equilibrium data for the acetone-methanol system and determine which thermodynamic model provides the best fit of the experimental data.

Complex Engineering Problem (CEP)

CH321 Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics II

CEP on Applications of Solution Thermodynamics.
The course is designed for learning Theory of Vapor/Liquid Equilibria and its applications. The
present complex engineering problem is designed to demonstrate practical applications of VLE to
chemical process Industry.

CEP Statement

A chemical Industry is separating large batches of acetone and methanol. A process engineer
working in control unit finds unusual differences between output results predicted by the theoretical
model and actual system data. Your job is to use different thermodynamic models to verify the
validity of system data.

Following is the set of VLE data for the system acetone (1)/methanol (2) at 328.15 K (55°C).

(a) Basing calculations on ((Eq. (12.1)), find parameter

values for the Margules equation that provide the best fit of GE / R T to the data, and prepare a P-x-y
diagram that compares the experimental points with curves determined from the correlation.

(b) Repeat (a) for the Van Laar equation.

(c) Repeat (a) for the Wilson equation.

(d) Using Barker's method, find parameter values for the Margules equation that provide the best fit
of the P-xl data. Prepare a diagram showing the residuals δP and δy1 plotted vs. X1.

(e) Repeat (d) for the Van Laar equation.

(f) Repeat for the Wilson equation.
