Through out the times, many artists have discovered and developed their own
materials and sources to be used and have marvelously encompass the beauty of
their majestic crafts. Cultural heritage was evident in the indigenous art of different
groups of people throughout the country that showcase the traditional and
contemporary techniques utilized. It only proves that Filipinos were artistically
skilled in the different form of arts either visual or performing arts.
PAINTING AND POTTERY. Paintings were distinguished in red chip (clay mixed with
water) on the ritual pottery of the Philippines such as the “Manunggul jar” which is
an example of a burial jar. While pottery that comes with different forms and
functions such as burnay has been a long tradition used as decorative items, cooking
vessel and storage container,

Islamic teachings. This reflects the ethnic background and the identity of Muslim
people. Mosques, calligraphy writing, sarimanok, okir/okkir, batik continue to
flourish through the country.

PERFORMING ARTS. Music, dance, literature play important role in spreading the
rich culture of the Philippines. The early music of the Philippines featured used of
indigenous musical instruments like gong and kulintang. Philippine music also
attributed mixed of Islamic and variety of Asian music and soon evolved to different
styles and genre such as folk, hip-hop and rock music. On the other hand, Philippine
dances continue to flourish in the country.
The kundiman folk music is a popular music form that is unique to the
Philippine islands. It is music that is a combination of both words and music. As it
evolves through the years, original Pilipino music (OPM) emerged and thereby also
having a distinct Manila Sound. Some well-known musicians in the Philippines
include Rodolfo Cornejo, composer and conductor; Antonino Buenaventura,
conductor; and Antonio J. Molina, conductor and composer.
There are also several types of dance in the Philippines, those with Muslim or
Spanish influences as well as those from the lowlands and mountains.
Philippine musical theater also came along with such pride in the staging of
Katy! the Musical is a Filipino–language biographical musical based on the life of
Katy de la Cruz, considered the "Queen of Philippine vaudeville and jazz" with music
by Ryan Cayabyab and story and libretto by Jose Javier Reyes.
Rama at Sita – The Musical is a 1999 full-length Filipino musical in the
Tagalog language. It is an adaptation of the 1980 Filipino rock opera ballet by three
National Artists Bienvenido Lumbera, Ryan Cayabyab, and Alice Reyes entitled,
"Rama, Hari", based on the Indian epic Ramayana topbilled by Kuh Ledesma and
Basil Valdez. The production was directed by Leo Rialp and is considered the most
expensive theatrical production in the Philippines to date.

A gem in our performing arts is theater legend Lea Salonga who became the
first Asian woman to win the prestigious Tony Award for portraying Kim in the
original Broadway run in 1991. She also won the Laurence Olivier Award two years
earlier for her role in the London West End production of Miss Saigon. It was staged
in Manila at the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 2000.
