ECON1005 Tutorial Sheet 4

This document provides tutorial questions for a statistics course. It includes questions about choosing appropriate statistical measures like mean and median to analyze datasets. It asks students to calculate measures of central tendency and dispersion for different datasets and identify outliers. It also asks students to describe the shape of distributions from stem-and-leaf plots and discuss when different averages like the mean or trimmed mean would be most suitable.

UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES

THE DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS

ECON1005 – SEMESTER I – 2019/2020
INTRODUCTION TO STATISTICS: Tutorial Sheet 4

1. You are a researcher employed in the Ministry of Gender, Youth and Child Development and you
have been asked to explore the following research question: “Which gender earns more in the
Trinidad and Tobago economy.” Describe how you will attempt to research this question making
sure to select and justify your choice of an appropriate measure of central tendency?
2. A recent IMF survey has estimated that around 50% of the citizens of both Grenada and St. Lucia
earn below USD$500 a month. Given the similarities between these countries determine an
appropriate measure that can go along with the statistic above that can possibly highlight
differences between the two countries?

3. An automobile rental agency has the following mileage data for a simple random sample of 20
cars that were rented last year.

55 33 65 67 69 37 88 82 39 60
54 45 74 92 59 55 38 59 29 72

a. Compute the sample mean for this dataset.

b. Compute the sample standard deviation for this dataset.

4. The Stem and Leaf output that corresponds to a set of test scores (out of 100) is as follows:

Stem-and-leaf of C1 N=?
Leaf Unit = 1.0

5 2 12589
16 3 00046667889
(16) 4 0112444455566778
18 5 0011289
11 6 1111133
4 7 003
1 8 9

Use the stem and leaf display to answer the following questions below:

(a) How many data points form this set.

(b) Calculate the mode, median and range of this data set.
(c) Calculate the inter-quartile range and quartile deviation of this data set.

(d) Describe the shape of the distribution in this display. Support your answer.

5. a. Discuss the difference between the Mean and Trimmed Mean in the presence of outliers.
b. A lecturer has computed the following statistics from a recently concluded ECON 1005
exam: Mean= 45, Median= 60 and Mode= 63. Determine which of the previous measures
will be the most appropriate in summarizing the performance of the class? Give reasons for
your answer.

6. A researcher asked 35 customers: “How much would you pay for a television adapter with
Internet Access?” Their grouped responses are as follows:

Class Freq
Interval
1 - 25 7
26 - 50 3
51 - 75 5
76 - 100 4
101 - 125 6
126 - 150 3
151 - 175 2
176 - 200 5

a. Calculate the mean of the dataset

b. Calculate the variance and standard deviation of the dataset
