Discussion and Conclusion Astronomy

1) The document discusses lessons learned and improvements for future solar observation practical tasks. It was learned that early morning observations are best and that time management is important. Problems with equipment like blurred lenses and loose screws can impact accuracy. 2) The objectives of determining mean grid bearing and manually calculating data were achieved. 3) Problems faced included poor equipment condition, difficulty observing a high sun, and mistakes in recording data. To improve, equipment needs to be in good condition and team communication/spirit should be strengthened.

Discussion And Conclusion

5.1 Things learned in this practical task
Overall, we learned so many input and information from this practical task. The most
valuable thing that we learned is in deepening our knowledge and understanding on
how to conduct solar observation by hands-on. We also learned that doing solar
observation early in the morning are recommended as in the morning, the sun is rising
from east so it will be easy for us to observe the sun. We learned that time management
is very important in conducting this practical work because we have to be on time so
that the position of the sun is just nice to be observed. Moreover, we learned that solar
observation is one of the methods that can be used to gain the azimuth to start any land
surveying work. Basically, it is the common method used in cadastral survey.
Furthermore, we also learned the correct way to observe the sun. Besides that, we
learned to record the measurement in the fieldwork form and then continue with the
calculation to get the true RO of the solar observation. Next, we also gained the
experienced to use the instrument correctly with our lecturer guidance and then after a
week we manage to use the equipment by ourselves.

5.2 The achievement of the practical objectives

All of our practical objectives are considered successful because we manage to
carry out the solar observation with the knowledge we gained throughout the practical
task, we also successfully calculate the data manually by using the formula provided,
experienced to use the instruments hands-on in the right way as its function and we
also manage to determine the mean grid bearing of the solar observation.
5.3 Problems faced during the practical task
First thing first, the most detectable problem that we faced during the practical task is
basically coming from the instruments. Sometimes, we will get a theodolite or a total
station which condition that not really good. As an example, it can be provided with a
loose screw, the instrument turn off by itself because the battery case is not tight, some
function in the theodolite display don’t show up or the view from the lens is blurry and it
is hard to adjust the focus lens because the view already blurred. So, these problems
will affect the quality of data as it can contribute to a larger error and the solar
observation will be inaccurate. To prevent those problems, we must check the
instrument carefully before start the fieldwork and make sure we get the instrument with
a good condition. Remember to not miss anything so we don’t have to waste our time to
return back at the tool workshop.

Secondly, if we a bit late in observing the sun we will not be able to see the sun
comfortably as the sun will be higher and it will be hard for us to observe it especially
because one of our teammates is very tall so if the sun goes higher he must bend his
knee so he can continue with the observation until one point the theodolite eyepiece
position is too low for him to look on it. So, to avoid this problem we must come earlier
than usual so we can make the solar observation comfortably because in the very early
morning the sun moves slower. Being on time is the most important thing to solve this
problem.

Lastly, the problem we faced is the way we conduct the solar observation whether
from the way we observe the sun or the way we do the booking. Each one of us get the
opportunity to observe the sun, well everyone has their own ways in observing so we
can say that there are some problems that we noticed from the way we observed such
as, the eye position is not correct and that makes us cannot see the sun. Next, we
sometimes take the reading too slow because we don’t aware that the sun already
moves higher. From the booking, we sometimes forgot to record the time of each
measurement or mistaken in writing the numbers. These will lead to the low accuracy
and quality of the data. We must make sure to do all the observation efficiently and
carefully to prevent the uncontrollable error.
5.4 Suggestion to improve quality of the practical task in the future
To improve the quality of the practical task in the future, we have to make sure that
our instrument is in a tiptop condition so we can have a better result of data and the
accuracy of the measurement will be increased. Moreover, we have to make sure that
the communication skills among the team members are developed so we can
communicate with them easily and if there is something that we don’t understand we
can just ask them. As we all know, teamwork is everything in this practical task so by
having a good relationship with your teammates it will make the practical task more fun
and enjoyable. Furthermore, we have to build the spirit in conducting this practical work
because we know that there are difficulties in order to observe the sun in a limited time.
So, do not give up when we cannot observe the sun on time and keep trying so that we
can get used to the instruments and can be a better surveyor in the future.
