Course Objectives:
1. To provide a basic understanding of evolution of IoT and its functional modules.
2. To develop skillset to implement IoT systems for wearable applications.

Expected Course Outcome:


The students will be able to
1. Design and develop IoT end points for wearable applications.
2. To identify the real world problem and give IoT solutions.
3. To analyse and select appropriate protocols, wireless techniques for the problem.

Module:1 Role of IoT in wearable devices 5 hours


Smart connectivity and Big picture of IoT-smart devices, networks, Wireless technologies and need for
data analysis.
Evolution of wearable technology, Wearable IoT use cases- Smart watches , Android wear, Smart glasses,
fitness trackers, health care devices, cameras, smart clothing etc

Module:2 IoT supported technologies: Internet/Web and networking 4 hours


basics
OSI model, data transfer referred with OSI model, IP Addressing, point to point data transfer, point to
multi point data transfer & network topologies, sub-nets, network topologies referred with web,
introduction to web servers and cloud computing

Module:3 IoT supported technologies: Hardware platforms: 4 hours


Overview of single board computers (Raspberry pi/Beagle bone black), ARM Cortex Processors, Arduino.
Network Fundamentals: Overview and working principle of wired and wireless networking equipment’s –
router, switches, access points, and hubs. Networking configurations in Linux accessing hardware &
device files interactions.
Module:4 Wireless communication standards: 3 hours
Bluetooth - IEEE 802.15.1, Wireless LAN- IEEE 802.11(WiFi) , Near Field communication, WiMax-
IEEE 802.16, LR-WPAN- IEEE 802.15.4 (Zigbee), 6LoWPAN, mobile network, GPS

Module:5 IOT architecture: 4 hours


IoT functional requirements, building blocks, IoT architecture layers, cloud and fog based architecture,
M2M – Machine to Machine architecture, Web of Things, physical layer, MAC layer, 6LoWPAN security
aspects in IoT

Module:6 IOT Application Development: 4 hours


Application Protocols: MQTT, REST/HTTP, CoAP, MySQL Back-end Application Designing: Apache for
handling HTTP Requests, PHP & MySQL for data processing, MongoDB Object type Database, HTML,
CSS &jQuery for UI Designing, JSON lib for data processing, Security & Privacy during development,
Application Development for mobile Platforms: Overview of Android / IOS App Development tools
Module:7 Wearable IoT 4 hours
Case studies – Health care, fitness and sports, industrial, defence and security, home automation, gaming,
fashion and apparel.

Module:8 Contemporary issues: 2 hours
