Numerical Reasoning

Instruction: Solve the following Math quizzes.

115. 2187, 729, 243, 81, 27, 9, ____?
1. 6 2. 3 3. 4 4. 2
Solution:
All numbers are powers of 3 (3n)

116. 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, ___?

1. 72 2. 75 3. 81 4. 90
Solution:
All numbers are perfect squares (n2)

117. 13 -21 34 -55 89 ___?

1. -95 2. 104 3. -123 4. -144
Solution:
Next number is the negative of the sum of previous two numbers

118. AZ CX EV GT ____?
1. IR KP 2. IR KQ 3. IS KQ 4. IS KP
Solution:
First letter shifts forward two letters, Second letter shifts backward two letters

119. What is 107 – (-17)?

1. -90 2. 90 3. 124 4. -124
Solution:
Subtracting a negative number is equivalent to addition of a positive number

120. 6/8 + 2 ½ + 4/12 is also the same as?

1. ½ + 2.5 + ¼
2. ½ + 5/2 + 1/6
3. ¾ + 2.5 + 1/6
4. ¾ + 5/2 + 1/3

Solution:

6/8 can be at lowest term ¾

2 ½ can be converted to improper fraction 5/2 (multiply the denominator to the mixed number
and add the product to the numerator to get the improper fraction)

4/12 can be at lowest term 1/3

Problem Solving / Word Problems:

121. Kit is twice as old as his friend Sam. Sam is 5 years older than Cara. In 5 years, Kit will be
three times as old as Cara. How old is Sam?
1. 2 years old 2. 3 years old 3. 4 years old 4. 5 years old
Solution:

Let: x=Kit’s Age, y=Sam’s Age, z=Cara’s Age

Equations: x=2y 1st Equation

y=z+5 2nd Equation

x+5=3(z+5) 3rd Equation

Substitute 2nd Eq to 3rd Eq

x+5=3y 4th Equation

Substitute 1st Eq to 4th Eq

2y+5=3y

5=3y-2y

5=y

122. James’s dad is 5 times older than James and James is twice as old as his sister Sara. In two
years, the sum of their ages will be 58. How old is James now?

1. 6 years old 2. 7 years old 3. 8 years old 4. 9 years old

Solution:

Let: x=James Dad’s Age, y=James’ Age, z=Sara’s Age

Equations: x=5y 1st Equation

y=2z 2nd Equation

(x+2)+(y+2)+(z+2)=58

x+2+y+2+z+2=58

x+y+z+6=58

x+y+z=52 3rd Equation

2nd Equation can be manipulated as

z=0.5y 2nd Equation

Substitute 1st and 2nd Equation to 3rd Equation

5y+y+0.5y=52

Multiply both sides by 2 to make all coefficients whole

2(5y+y+0.5y)=2(52)

10y+2y+y=104

13y=104

y=8

123. Cathy scored 85, 87, 90, 95, and 100 in her Math exams. What will be her average grade in
Math from this period?

1. 91.40 2. 91.50 3. 92 4. 93.50

Solution:
Arithmetic Average =
∑ of all scores
number of scores
85+87+ 90+95+100
Arithmetic Average= =91.4
5

124. Letty left home and drove at the rate of 50 miles per hour for 2 hours. She stopped for
lunch then drove for another 4 hours at 65 mph to reach Los Angeles. How many miles did Letty
drive to reach LA?

1. 115 miles 2. 360 miles 3. 310 miles 4. 100 miles

Solution:
Distance=Speed*Time
Total Distance = Sum of all distance traveled
(50*2)+(65*4)=360 miles

125. Michelle went to SM for the 3-day sale. She bought a new pair of shoes and paid only
P2,450 discounted for 20% off. What was the original price of the shoes?

1. P3,062.50 2. P3,260.50 3. P3,620.50 4. P3,026.50

Solution:
Discounted Price = P2,450 Discount Rate = 20% Discounted Price = 80% or 4/5
2450 2450∗5 12250
Original Price= = = =3062.5
