About the Cost Calculator File


This cost calculator file includes four worksheets: Introduction, Costs, Capacity, and Recovery.
The Introduction worksheet is the current worksheet. It provides information about the file and how to use it.
The Costs worksheet defines the initial and recurring costs related to servers, databases, storage, and network. It also de
costs.
The Capacity worksheet defines a sample hardware set up.
The Recovery worksheet provides the cost to be charged per virtual machine for the defined fixed costs. It also provides
memory, and storage for each virtual machine to recover the hardware costs. The recovery period defined is three years

How to Use the Cost Calculator?


The cost calculator enables you to calculate the fixed costs to be charged per virtual machine on a monthly or yearly bas
identify the base rates for the CPU, memory, and storage to recover the hardware cost over a defined period. This period
period. The costs can be calculated by entering values in the yellow colored cells, which are the configurable cells.
To use this cost calculator:
1. Enter the values for the following in the Costs worksheet:
- Recover Term: The time period in years to recover the initial and recurring costs.
This includes the cost for the hardware and the cost for the software licenses.
- Number of Servers: The number ESX Server hosts in the cluster.
- Fixed Costs: The initial and recurring costs for the servers, storage, and network and storage connectivity.
Also enter the costs for VMware product licenses and Microsoft product license.
2. Enter the values for the following in the Capacity worksheet:
- Node Redundancy: Number of ESX Server hosts that are redundant.
- RAM (GB): The total memory in GB per ESX Server host.
- Processors: The number of processors in each ESX Server host.
- Processor (GHz): The processing speed of each processor.
- Tier 2 Storage (GB): The storage capacity in GB.
3. Enter the reservation and over commit percentage for memory and CPU.
4. Enter the values for the following in the Recovery worksheet.
- Total Hours per Month: The number of hours per month to be considered for calculating the costs.
- Hardware Cost Recovered %: The percentage of the total hardware cost recovered by charging for the memory usa
- Total VMs: Total number of virtual machines across the ESX Servers hosts in the cluster.
The fixed cost per virtual machine and the base rate for the memory, CPU, and storage is calculated and displayed in the
