Energy Conservation &management in Lightining System

The document discusses energy conservation and auditing of lighting systems. It provides information on calculating the installed load efficiency ratio (ILER) to assess lighting systems and determine where improvements can be made. An energy audit was conducted of the lighting system at a sugar industry plant. By replacing existing lamps with more efficient options, the plant's lighting load was reduced from 83.69 kW to 55.394 kW, saving over 83043.7 kWh per season and Rs. 3.321 lakhs in energy costs annually. The audit demonstrated that significant energy and cost savings can be achieved through upgrading lighting systems.

ENERGY CONSERVATION &MANAGEMENT IN

LIGHTINING SYSTEM

INTRODUCTION:
Now a days industries as well as we are facing the problem of load shading i.e.
energy crisis. Systematic energy conservation and energy audits are mandatory for
various industrial sector by bridging the gap between demand and supply through
energy saving.

ENERGY CONSERVATION:
Energy conservation means reduction in energy consumption but without affecting
the quality and quantity of product. It includes that avoiding wastage of energy and
adopting new methods to conserve the energy without affecting productivity and
comfort

ENERGY AUDITY:
Energy audit is a study of energy consumption related with an organization,
system, process, plant, equipment. In energy audit first step is to understand how
the energy is used in a given industry or organization. The study involves mass
and energy balance of major energy consuming equipment .As a result of energy
audit, we can consume the energy and reduce the bill of energy

ENERGY AUDIT OF LIGHTING SYSTEM INCLUDES:

► Assessment of lighting system.

►Lighting load and lighting consumption.

►Lighting performance test.

PROCEDURE FOR ASSESMENT OF LIGHTING
SYSTEM:
1.calculate the room index(RI):
L= length of interior.
W=width of interior.
Hm=The mounting height, which is the height of lighting and fitting above
the horizontal working plane.

2. calculation of the installed load efficiency

ratio(ILEAR):
Step 1 Measure the floor area of Area=………..m2
interior
Step 2 Calculate the Room R I=……….
index
Step 3 Determine the total Total ckt.watts=……
circuit watt
Step4 Calculate watts per sq. w/m=…..
meter(step3/step1)
Step 5 Ascertain the average. E(AVG .MAINTAINED) =…
Maintain illuminance
by using lux meter
Step6 Calculate lux per watt Lux/watt=…..
per sq . meter
(step5/step4)
Step7 Obtain target lux/watt Target lux/ watt=…..
for type of the type of
interior/application.
Step8 Calculate installed load ILER=….
efficiency ratio
(step6/step7)

3. ILER Assessment :
Compare the calculated ILER with the following table

ILER Assessment
0.75 or above Satisfactory to good
0.51 – 0.74 Review suggested
0.5 or less Urgent action is required

For a given installation,

Annual energy wastage (kwh) =(1-ILER) *Total load (kw) *annual

operating hours

PERFORMANCE TEST :
The audit is done at sugar industry. The replacement for various lamps is
suggested. By replacing the existing lamps by energy saving lamp, the sugar
industry plant load is to be reduced from 83.69 kw to 55.394 kw. The
details are given below .

conclusion
1. Energy audit of the lighting system has shows that there is a large
energy savings.
2. Energy saved is energy produced,so it helps to reduce the bill of
energy and save the fuel .
3. The saved energy will be made available for the use in the future.
