Teaching Social Studies in Intermediate Grades

1. Social studies are also important for teaching students’ basic values, such as
justice and equality, which are the foundation of modern society. For every student,
social studies are often based around being a good member of the community at the
local level. For example, the early levels talk about friendship, social responsibility,
and then understanding how the individual affects the group. A good understanding
of how history has influenced the modern world gives people knowledge that can be
useful to other things and our daily living.
If we really understand social studies, we can identify some relations with
personal life and its influence in daily life. Social studies help a person to improve his
personal life.

a) It describes the importance of cultural unity and diversity within and across
groups.

b) It demonstrates an understanding that different people may describe the


same event or situation in diverse ways, citing reasons for the differences in
views.

c) It demonstrates an understanding that people in different times and places


view the world differently.

d) It helps to examine the interaction of human beings and their physical


environment.

e) It helps to work independently and cooperatively to accomplish goals.

f) It is useful in identifying and describing examples of tension between an


individual’s beliefs and government policies and laws.

g) It helps to examine the rights and responsibilities of the individual in relation


to his/her social group such as family, peer group, school and class.

h) It examines the influence of public opinion on personal decision-making and


government policy on public issues.

2. For the first problem, there are still a lot of parents who can’t attend most of the
assembly within the schools. To give you a better example, we can consider the
Parent and Teachers Association in Primary and Secondary Levels, from year 2016
the data collected states that only 78-89 percent of the parents attended the PTA
meeting for the primary grades while 54-93 percent for the secondary. From this
data we can clearly see the gap between the society and the school.
For the second problem, some schools have skyrocketing number of enrolled
students that can pull down the ratio of teacher per students. The third problems flaw
is that in reality one size does not fit to everyone or we can say that the curriculum
can only be applied to an average number of students. The curriculum oversights a
huge number of students who cannot handle its task or requirements. And for the
fourth problem the very reason this happened is that this problem is cause in the
same manner of the second problem, the teachers losing time to read and realigning
their efforts to teaching more and more students. The continuous growth of the
population affects all of the ratio within the society.
