PLASTIC – AN AGATHOKAKOLOGICAL ENTITY’S

SABOTAGE

One may find quite difficult in pronouncing the title term

‘’Agathokakological’’ which is actually a term that is being used in Japanese
anime to describe the thing that has both positive and negative effects.
Indeed, plastic is such an entity that has both superior and adverse effects
on the earth and its environment. Right from its accidental birth in 1933 to
its nano level usage in modern times, plastic has undergone enormous
sequential scientific Odysseys. Though plastic finds its root source from the
nature’s crude oil, it doesn't have much ease in giving up to the nature. This
tough character possessed by plastic makes it an antagonist to environment.
In order to break and smoothen its tough nature, various researchers across
the globe are trying to sort out effective ways for disposing plastics. These
disposing methods include landfilling, incineration, recycling and various
other degradation methods. The first method of landfilling was proven to be
passable earlier to dispose 1.5 million tons of plastic waste when the
population was around 2.5 billion in 1950, but with the increase shift in
magnitude of population, made this method of disposal to be futile and
polluting. However, most of the countries still follow this method due to
incompetent and unavailability of suitable resources. The second method of
incineration involves the burning of plastics which retains back some of the
energy stored in plastics. Anyhow this method is much more toxic in
comparison with the landfilling thereby releasing hazardous substances such
as dioxins and poly-chlorinated biphenyl into the atmosphere. The third
method of recycling was considered as the final efficient solution for plastic
related problems, but then due to lack of public awareness and poor waste
management facilities in many undeveloped countries, only about 8% of
world’s plastic was able to be recycled that attracted only the developed
nations. As a result of the non-success of above mentioned methods, the
global scientific community started to focus on developing degradation
methods using micro-organisms, light etc. to convert the plastic into an
accessible fuel. These methods unlike conventional methods, portrayed the
promising future for effective degradation of plastics. The term
‘’biodegradation” may sound familiar as it is widely used in many industries
to accomplish a final product by the utilization of various micro-organisms
and their derivatives. But “photo degradation” unlike biodegradation is
limited under selective industries that uses the action of light rays (mostly
UV) to alter the material’s structure thereby breaking it into lighter and less
toxic substance. The process of photo degradation can further be
accompanied by the chemical additives (promoters, photosensitizers etc.)
which will make the plastic more light sensitive to be photodegraded. By this
method it was proven that it takes less than a year to photo degrade a
lighter polyethylene bag. Perhaps this method might earn in a great deal in
future for better degradation of plastic materials.
