Agri SBA Crop Production

Amir Ruplal conducted a project comparing the growth of leafy crops like lettuce in loamy soil versus loam soil mixed with fertilizers. The project involved planting 24 lettuce seedlings, with half in each soil type. Various activities were carried out like planting, transplanting, watering, fertilizing, and applying insecticide. The project aimed to produce large lettuce bouquets to satisfy consumers and maximize production/profit. Ultimately, 80 lbs of lettuce were harvested from the fertilized soil, generating a profit of $13,940 compared to $10,000 projected.

I would like to express my special thanks of gratitude to my teacher miss wright

who gave me the golden opportunity to do this wonderful project on the topic
lettuce, which also helped me in doing a lot of Research and I came to know about
so many new things I am really thankful to them.
Secondly, I would also like to thank my parents and friends who helped me a lot in
finalizing this project within the limited period.
Introduction

What is lettuce?

Lettuce is a hardy, cool-weather vegetable that thrives when the average daily
temperature is between 60 and 70°F. It should be planted in early spring or late
summer. At high temperatures, growth is stunted, the leaves may be bitter and
the seed stalk forms and elongates rapidly. Some types and varieties of lettuce
withstand heat better than others do.
Budget

Projected income

50lb of lettuce was reaped

Lettuce sold at $200 per pound

Projected income= output × price = 50 × $200 = $10,000

Projected expenditure

24 seedlings(lettuce)-$15 x 24 =$360

Bag of fertilizer (25 kg) = $800

Insecticide (karati) bottle = $1000

Total projected expenditure = $360 + $800 + 1000= $2160

Projected profit = projected income - projected expenditure

$10000 - $2160

Actual budget

80 lb of lettuce was reaped

Lettuce sold at $200 per pound

Projected income= output × price = 80 × $200 = $16,000

Projected expenditure

24 seedlings(lettuce)-$15 x 24 =$360

Bag of fertilizer (25 kg) = $1200

Insecticide (karati) bottle = $1500

Total expenditure= $360 + $1200 + $1500 = $3060

Actual profit = $16000 - $3060 = $13940

Review of literature
Aims
1. To produce lettuce with large bouquets to satisfy consumers’ needs
2. To produce lettuce that would maximize production and profit
Experimental design
The researcher purchased 24 plants (lettuce); half of the lettuce were planted in
loam soil and the other half in loamy soil mixed with fertilizers. The plants were
scattered out under a shaded area.

Name of equipment Uses

Water cans Used to water plants daily
Fork Used to plow the land
Cutlass Used to weed out the area and
upturn the soil in some areas where
the fork cannot.
Seed boxes Used for the baby lettuce
plants(seedlings)
Sprayer can Used to spray pesticides on the plant

Activities
Planting technique

- Cutting - weed was remove using a cutlass

- Watering- land area was water to soften the soil

- Ploughing- soil was plough using a fork

- Hoeing- a hoe is used to form rows

- planting lettuce was, planted in the rows formed

Transplanting the seedlings were exposed to sunlight for 7-8 days. This is, called
hardening which helps to strengthen the young plant so that they can withstand
full sunlight by the time they were ready to be, transferred. Transplanting of the
seedling was, carried out in the morning end late in the evening from the
scorching sun.

Water utilization

During the hot months of summer, lettuce needs an almost constant supply of
water. The leaves have an extremely high water content and without enough
irrigation, the plants will succumb to the heat and turn bitter.

Fertilizing
Lettuce plants thrive in nutrient-rich soil. Once the seedlings emerge, a dose of
fertilizer (TSP,) applied to maximize lettuce leaf production to twelve plants with
well-balanced fertilizer with equal parts nitrogen, potassium and phosphate.

Mulching Materials were placed on the soil surface around the base of the plant
such as dry grass, leaf-molds and plastic shaving to conserve soil water improves
soil fertility and controls weed growth.

Application of insecticide karati, was mixed to a gallon of water in the knapsack

sprayer and was used to spray the lettuce to prevent the infestation of insect and
fungi.
Reaping- The lettuce was properly collected and was washed with regular water
for sale.
