LESSON 1
TOPIC: VENN DIAGRAM
A Venn Diagram, which was introduced by John Venn, is a diagram that shows
relationships among different finite sets.

Examples: U U = {apple, grapes, orange,banana, atis,

papaya
duhat, papaya}
A B
A = { apple, grapes, orange}
Apple grapes orange banana duhat B = { banana, duhat}
Type equation here. A and B are disjoint sets because they
Have no common elements.
atis

U = {1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,} , A = {4,5,6,7,8,}, B = {4,5,6} B ϲ A since the

elements of B are found in A. A and B are joint sets because they

have common elements.

LESSON 1
TOPIC: VENN DIAGRAM
WORKSHEET

Answer the following questions using the figures below.

1. Give the elements of the following sets using Figure 1.

U = 5,10______________________________________
A = 2,4,6,8______________________________________
B =1,3,7,9______________________________________
2. What can you say about Set A and Set B?
A&B are this joint set because they have no common elements

3. Using Figure 2:
a) Yes or No: Is Set C = Set D?NO _______
Because they have not common element

4. Give the elements of the following sets using Figure 3.

U =J,K ________________________________________
E =A,B,F,G _________________________________________
F =d,e, i _________________________________________
5. Are set E and set F joint sets or disjoint sets? Joint set
___________________ Why?because they have
Common

LESSON 2
TOPIC: SOLVING PROBLEMS INVOLVING SETS WITH THE USE OF VENN DIAGRAM To solve
problems using Venn diagram we must consider these coordinating Conjunctions: or” and
“and”. We use “and” if we are referring to intersection and “or” if we referring to union of
sets.

Examples:
1. In a class, 15 like English, 20 like Filipino and 10 like both English an Filipino.
How many students are there in all?
Solution:
Let n(E) = number of students who like English =15
Let n (F) = number of students who like Filipino = 20
Let n(E ∩ F) = number of students who like both English and Filipino =10 So, n ( E )
minus n (E ∩ F), 15-10 = 5, number of students who like English only

2. In a birthday party attended 40 guests, a dance contest was held. The following
participated in the dance contest:
18 danced the hip-hop dance 6 danced the hip-hop and ballroom dance 20
danced the ballroom dance 4 danced the hiphop and the folk dance 15 danced
the folk dance 2 danced the 3 pieces
11 danced the ballroom and the folkdance

Questions:
a) How many danced the hip-hop dance only? _10_
b) How many danced the ballroom dance only? _5_
c) How many danced the folk dance only? __2__
d) How many danced the hip-hop and folk dance but not ballroom dance?_2__
e) How many danced the hip-hop and ballroom but not folk dance? _4_ f) How
many danced the ballroom dance and folk dance but not hip-hop dance?_9_
g) How many did not dance any of the three pieces?_6__
Solution:
Let set H = Number of guests who danced the hip-hop dance
B = Number of guests who danced the ballroom dance
F = Number of guests who danced the folk dance
FIRST QUARTER WK 2.
WORKSHEET
Solve the following problem using the Venn Diagram.
1. Out of 150 students of Grade 7 , 45 are in the Ling Club, 65 are in Franco Club and 20
are in both Ling and Franco Club .How many students are:
a) In Ling Club only? 45
b) In Franco Club only? 65
c) In Ling or Franco Club? 20
d) Not in Ling nor Franco Club? 20
2. A group of students were given questionnaires to find out what sports they like. It was
found out that:
84 like basketball 47 like basketball and tennis 80 like volleyball 42
like volleyball and tennis
65 like tennis 25 like the 3 sports
58 like basketball and volleyball
a ) How many like tennis only? 65
b ) How many like volleyball only? 80
c ) How many like basketball only? 84
d ) How many like basketball and volleyball but not tennis? 58
