Assignment 2

This document contains three assignments related to foundation analysis and design for a civil engineering course. The first assignment involves proportioning a strap combined footing and designing a trapezoidal combined footing. The second assignment involves determining the dimensions of an annular raft foundation under different loading conditions. The third assignment involves plotting shear force and moment diagrams for a square raft foundation supporting 20 columns using rigid beam and simplified flexible methods.

Assignment 2: Combined Footings and Raft Foundations

(Due Date: Thursday 18/02/2010)
10 m
1. (a) Proportion strap combined footing for two
columns located at the property line as show
below. Allowable net bearing pressure of the soil 1200 kN 1800 kN
at foundation level is 300 kPa. Assume that the
strap is rigid and the footings provided are square
in shape. Note that the stress distribution is to be
uniform beneath the foundation so as to minimize
differential settlement.

(b) A trapezoidal combined footing has to be designed at a depth of 3m from ground surface in a granular soil
deposit. Plate load test has been performed at the same depth and load settlement curve is given below? Find the
dimensions B1 and B2 considering: uniform soil pressure distribution, bearing capacity and settlement criteria as
per the IS codes. Clearly state your assumptions.

2. An annular raft has to carry total structural load (above

ground level) of W = 2000 kN. The resultant of wind
force is assumed to have magnitude of 100 kN and it is
supposed to act at 5 m height above the ground level.
b
The foundation base is 3 m below the ground surface c
and net allowable bearing pressure of soil is 200 kPa at a
that level. Bulk density of soil is 18 kN/m3, and the
bulk density of reinforced concrete is 25 kN/m3. It is
specified to have minimum contact pressure of 20 kPa
anywhere in the foundation. Find the raft dimensions
(a, b, c), and provide the analysis of circumferential
and radial moments in the foundation raft, under the
following two conditions.

(a) The annular raft is 120 cm thick and it is without

ring beam.

(b) The annular raft is 60 cm thick without ring beam

of 60 cm width and 100 cm depth (above raft). W+A.σo e

3. Square raft foundation has been proposed for a residential building as shown in the figure below. The building has 20
columns and the loads transmitted through those columns are given in the figure. The thickness of slab is proposed to
be 600 mm. Plot the shear force and moment distribution diagrams for four horizontal segments shown in the figure
assuming beams on elastic foundations. Provide the solution using the following two approaches and compare the
results.
a. Rigid beam analysis
b. Simplified flexible method
