Course Description

This unit concentrates on the management of small business and the aspects of coping with survival and growth of small and medium-sized
businesses. Topics covered, include the nature of small business, a perspective on entrepreneurship, the ethical and social responsibilities of the
entrepreneur, entrepreneurial personality, strategic planning for small business, the business plan, forms of small business ownership, organizing,
directing and controlling the small business, marketing the small business, determining the right person and promoting the small business.
Students relate case studies of small businesses with theory and undertake a substantial practical assignment, which includes interviews with
owner-managers.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

A. Determine the key legal issues facing small businesses and how they impact on operations.
B. Apply strategic planning principles in developing and managing small businesses.
C. Examine competently the financial opportunities for small business.
D. Undertake an evaluation of a small business and prepare a growth strategy for the business.
E. Develop a human resource strategy for a small business, including plans for effective delegation,
team building and coaching.
