This research is about the effects poverty has on crime and violence. This research will allow
people to learn about what really causes most of the crime all over the world. I hope this
information I have gathered will provide people with the necessary information they are seeking
for. Thank you all for reading and I hope someone will benefit from this research, and learn the
effects poverty as on crime and violence.

This topic is of interest to me because over the years I grew up hearing and seeing how
poverty affects the everyday life of the people around me and the world. Moreover poverty has a
psychological influence on the people who become desperate and depressed leads than to
commit a crime, as they think crime is the only way to solve poverty. In the community where I
live I see the younger generation getting involved in criminal activities. When its holiday
season, majority of them cannot sustain themselves so they always have the intention to do
criminal activity because they want to prove to friends, family and loves one that they have
money to spend. Instead of earning it honestly or the legal way, they earn that money in a
dishonest or an illegal way. So, I am grateful I got this opportunity to do this research where I
will learn more about the effect poverty has on crime and violence among young people.

On the other hand, as a student of English this research will benefit me by developing my
comprehension skills. For example, reading comprehension is the ability to read text, process it,
and understand its meaning. So, my vocabulary and reading skills will be improved by being
exposed to different written texts. My vocabulary skills will be developed as I will be learning
new jargons, words related to my topic and identifying my grammar errors. On the other hand,
my writing skills will developed as I will have to do a reflection on the information I gather from
the materials I selected. Therefore the reflection will improve my summary skills. I will be able
to summarize and identify the main point that matter in written piece also will be able to benefit
by enhancing the ability to edit and self assess my information I gather from the internet.

Also, the materials that I will use to do this research are: an online journal article, newspaper
article and a cartoon article from a newspaper. I will surf the internet for reliable journal article
on poverty and the effects it has on crime and violence. Also, I will read the daily Observer, or
Gleaner for article to help me throughout this research.

The evil effects of poverty

BY RUPERT JOHNSON

Wednesday, February 18, 2015

POVERTY is like an evil monster whose vicious tentacles are far-reaching and destructive. There is no
doubt that it has taken a stranglehold on millions of people across the world. And there is also no doubt
that the victims of this calamitous situation will do desperate acts to extricate themselves from this state.
Although many poverty-stricken people will reach out and seek refuge in peaceful religious movements of
all kinds, others will express their discontent and frustration in extremely violent means. In other words,
when many people are trapped in the monstrous grip of poverty they will lash out in all directions.

With the advent of the mass media portals, such as radio, television, and the Internet, millions of poor
people are becoming more and more conscious of the reigning social and economic inequities. And with
this consciousness comes heightened expectations. When these expectations are unfulfilled, a
combination of discontent and frustration generally emerges.

This state of affairs has now become a breeding ground for the disaffected hordes across the globe.
Rebellion against the existing social and economic inequities seems to find expression in acts of
terrorism. But it should be noted that not all terrorists are socially and economically deprived. Many are
privileged youngsters who have benefited enormously from our mainstream societies. These activists
appear to be misguided idealists who feel that they have a moral obligation to fight with the poor and
downtrodden.

There is no doubt that those who are imbued with an idealistic idea against the status quo have had
enormous appeal to the poor and disaffected. It should be understood that an idea can be a powerful
force. It cannot be easily defeated with guns and bullets. It can be said that the only way to decimate an
idea is to devise and initiate a better idea.

To destroy the breeding ground of terrorism, the powers that be have to make a concerted effort to
alleviate the scourge of abject poverty across the globe. The fight against terrorism cannot be won on the
battlefield with a preponderance of military might alone.

THE BRITISH JOURNAL ARTICLE

UNEMPLOYMENT, INEQUALITY, POVERTY AND CRIME: Spatial Distribution
Patterns of Criminal Acts in Belgium, 2001—06

Marc Hooghe, Bram Vanhoutte, Wim Hardyns and Tuba Bircan

The British Journal of Criminology
Vol. 51, No. 1 (JANUARY 2011), pp. 1-20
Published by: Oxford University Press
Stable URL: http://www.jstor.org/stable/23640334
Page Count: 20
Topics: Violent crimes, Property crimes, Crime rates, Urban crime, Income inequality, Crime,
Unemployment, Poverty, Criminal justice, Criminology

Previous research has indicated that various deprivation indicators have a positive impact on
crime rates at the community level in this article, we investigate the impact of deprivation
indicators on crime in Belgian municipalities (n=599) for the period 2001-6. A spatial regression
analysis demonstrates that unemployment figures have a strong and significant impact on crime
rates, and this effect is stronger than the effect of income level. Income inequality has a
significant positive impact on property crime rates but a negative impact on violence crime.
Crime is heavily concentrated in the urban centers of Belgium, but we also observe some
important regional variations.

Demographic structure was not related for crime levels, while spatial analysis shows there is a
spill-over effect to neighboring communities for property crime, but not for violent crime, we
close with some theoretical and policy considerations on relation between unemployment crime.

HOW EACH MATERIAL SELECTED AFFECTED MY UNDERSTANDING OF THE

TOPIC?

Firstly, the information I gathered from the Jamaica observer news entitled the evil effects of
poverty by Rupert Johnson and it was published on Wednesday, February 18, 2015 throughout.
It has affected my understanding in the worst way possible. For example, it has allowed me to
feel terrified. It has shown me that poverty is like an evil monster with vicious tentacles and far
reaching and destructive. Even though it show me that, many poverty stricken people reach out
and seek refuge in peaceful religious movements of all kinds. There are others who will express
their discontent and frustration in extremely violent means,

Secondly, the online article has showed me that unemployment has a lot to do with crime and
violence in today’s society. Due to unemployment for young people, they engage in criminality.
This has allowed me to feel worried about the present situation involving our young people all
over the world.

Finally, the cartoon picture found on jamaciaobserver.com published on Wednesday, January 3,

2018 it has shown me that some humans are heartless towards each others. The cartoon picture
was clearly demonstrating the criminal act carried out in the public where you could see a mother
protecting her baby from the gun shots. This has allowed me to understand that these vicious
people are not even afraid of the police and a significant number of these criminal acts is because
of poverty. So poverty has a big effect on crime and violence all over the world.

Comment on the language techniques used in each material

First each material was collected and written in a different tone. In the newspaper article tone
was very emotional due to the frustration of poverty. The online journal shows that it has a great
impact and is highly informative. For example, the researcher has indicated that various
deprivations have demonstrated that unemployment figure has a significant impact on the crime
rate of being unemployed. The tone in the cartoon article was very emotional and terrifying
because there was a shooting in public where a mother and a baby were involved.

Comment on how the process of doing the SBA on the selected theme has help me to grow.

By doing this English SBA, it has allowed me to work in a group, which was a good experience
for me because I have learnt to listen to other’s opinions and also give my own point of view.

The process of doing this research has further developed my writing skills. Also it has helped me
to be a better person for instance I grown to have learn that everyone has their own opinion in
life even if they are wrong I should give them a chance to express themselves.

Therefore, doing this SBA has allowed me to be more responsible towards my school work

Finally, the SBA helped me to use Standard English orally.

12

Firstly, I want to give the almighty God thanks for giving me the courage and strength needed to
complete this SBA. Also, thanks to the teacher for being there each step of the way at times. It
was always challenging because I would not be able to come up with any ideas to inform my
fellow group members. I like the fact that I found the SBA challenging because I was able to
think outside the box and found creative ways on how to complete my SBA on time. Even
though some of my group members were unavailable because of work and their busy schedule,
and I was able to cope.

Poverty is a state or condition in which a person or community lacks the financial resource and
essential to enjoy a well-being life in society. It is something many of us in today’s society face.
As a result of this issue, my group members and I became very interested in this topic. We took a
democratic approach in selecting this topic Afterwards, we all went and explored our narrow
topic. This research focuses on the procedure that was taken to complete this research. These are
the four questions that we explored as a group.

1. What are the possible causes of poverty?

2. What is the relationship between academic achievement and poverty?
3. What is the effect poverty has on crime and violence?
4. How can poverty be eradicated?

To begin, a few materials were gathered to give us effective informative and factual information
to do this research. We all decided to use different types of materials: Online Journal, Newspaper
Article and Cartoon Article. During the analysis, we found out that the main factor that
contributes to poverty is that people are lacking of education around the world consequently, this
leads to depression and frustration that often times causes crime and violence among the people
in today’s world we also learnt that the relationship between poverty and academic achievement
is that poverty keeps children at home and hinder them from educational opportunities.

Lastly, poverty has been a major political issue in countries around the world. A lot of efforts
have been made towards poverty alleviation when the greater focus should be directed at the
eradication of poverty.
